Kyle Binder is good sh*t. I think he's got a decent future in broadcasting.

mkepanthers.com/news/2014/10/8/WVB_1008144413.aspxFriday night's volleyball schedule promises two really good matches: The Panthers are in Cleveland to play the Vikings, and Valpo travels to Rochester, Michigan to play Oakland. Both matches should be highly competitive, given the recent history of HL volleyball. Last year, these teams split their season series. Cleveland State's win the last weekend of the league season allowed them to edge out UIC for the last tournament seed. None of these four teams appears to have lost much from last year. Valpo has the best overall record, thanks to a 13-1 nonleague record. i haven't been able to find RPI rankings for this fall, so i don't know how Valpo's RPI compares with the other teams' ratings. We know that Panthers played a tough nonleague schedule. Update: the first 2014 RPI ratings were released today. Valpo's RPI was 68, Milwaukee's was 118, Youngstown's was 143, Green Bay's 170, Cleveland State's was 174, Oakland's 175, UIC's 221, and Wright State 288. Six teams on Milwaukee's schedule this year are ranked above Milwaukee on this first posting: Marquette (21), Michigan State (33), Western Kentucky (43), Minnesota (50), LIU Brooklyn (57), and Valpo (68). Last year, Valpo's RPI was the highest in the League until the end of the season, when Milwaukee's RPI passed them.

Taylor's interview on HLN was pretty good Yeah, loved Taylor's shout out to Oakland Gyros, and her interviewer's agreement with her assessment. Since the Panthers play only the one match this weekend, I suppose no Panther will win a POTW honor. Those will probably go to players who played two matches, which is a bit of a shame, given how Taylor and Myanna played. I'm sure that one or both of of them will be mentioned among the other strong performances when this week's Players of the week are announced. As expected: www.horizonleague.org/blog/valparaisos-beil-and-cleveland-states-hannon-named-volleyball-players-of-the-weekMyanna and Taylor are mentioned, but the POTW honorees played two matches.

Friday night saw the Panthers in Cleveland. Set one saw the Panthers and Vikings play close to an eitght-all score. Both teams were playing good defense to start; most of the points came off of long rallies. The Panthers took control of the set at that point, scoring three straight points, and seven total to a 16-12 lead, forcing the first Viking timeout. Out of the time out, the Panthers scored three more points to extend to a 20-12 lead. The Panthers continued to pull away, scoring six of the last eight points in the set to win easily, 25-15. Julie Kolinske, Myanna Ruiz and Maggie Dunbar had four kills apiece in set one. The Panthers outhit the Vikings .324 to .103, and enjoyed an advantage at the service line with five aces to two serving errors; the Vikings had one ace and one error.
In set two, Cleveland State took their first timeout after the Panthers got out to a 2-0 lead, but it didn't slow the Panthers much. They gradually built the lead to 13-7, which prompted the Vikings second timeout. The Vikings began to play better, narrowing the lead, and prompting Panther timeouts at 14-10 and 16-14. The Panthers expanded the lead back to four and played out the set, winning 25-22, heading into the break up two sets to none. The Panthers hit .237 in set two, to .184 for the Vikings.
Out of the break, the Panthers again started fast in set three, with Cleveland State calling timeouts when the Panthers took a 6-3 and then a 7-3 lead. The Panthers continued to play excellent volleyball, never allowing the Vikings to put more than two points together. The Panthers scored the last five points of the set, to win 25-17, and sweep the match. The Panthers hit .359 for the set, finishing the match with a hitting percentage of .306, to .175 for the Vikings.
Kolinske led all players with 14 kills for the match. Ruiz had a double double with 12 kills and 13 digs. She had only one assist, as Kayla Price played the entire match and had 41 assists. Ruiz, Dunbar and Maddie Schmitz had three service aces each, to account for nine of the Panthers ten aces in the match.
Elsewhere in the league, Valpo visited Oakland. The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in set one, and won the set easily at 25-19, but the rest of the evening, the Golden Grizzlies had Valpo's number, winning the second, third and fourth sets to take the match, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-18, to stay even with Milwaukee at 4-0 in league play. Valpo dropped to 3-2 in league play. In each set that Oakland won, they withstood Crusader runs, and finished with runs of their own to close out the set.
Green Bay traveled to Youngstown, and won two sets, but lost the fourth and fifth sets to remain winless in league play. YSU pulled into a tie with Valpo at 3-2. UIC swept winless Wright State in Dayton.

The Panthers' match with Youngstown State was the earliest of the league matches on Saturday. An early three point run by the Penquins put them up 4-2, but the Panthers responded with a three point run of their own, to take a 5-4 lead. Maggie Dunbar and Julie Kolinske lead the way early with three and two kills, respectively. Play stopped with the Panthers leading 8-6 to allow an injured Penguin player to leave the court. Consecutive Panther errors narrowed the lead to 10-9, then 11-10. The Penguins pulled into a tie at 11-all, and the back and forth continued until two consecutive YSU points gave them a 15-14 lead, prompting a Milwaukee timeout. The lead grew to two at 17-15, and the Panthers took their second timeout with the Penguins leading 18-16. A Panther hitting error gave YSU a four point lead at 20-16. The Panthers were not able to narrow the lead below three, and the Pengquins had their first set point at 24-19. The set ended with the Penquins kill, and a 25-19 score. The Panthers had a hard time getting their offense going, as they had a lot of trouble handling the Pengquins service. YSU outhit Milwaukee .484 to .270. The Panthers were lead by Dunbar, with five kills and a .714 hitting percentage.
The Panthers got out to an early lead in set two, but a Penguins run put them in a 7-5. At this point, Kolinske began to assert herself, and the Panthers pulled into a 8-8. A Panther hitting error prompted a Panther timeout with YSU leading 10-8. The lead grew to four at 12-8, then five at 14-9, forcing a second Panther timeout. The lead grew to 17-10, and then the Panthers strung together four points on a Hannah Blanchard kill, three consecutive service aces by Dunbar, forcing a Penquin timeout. YSU reopened a four point lead at 22-18, but the Panthers narrowed the lead back to one. The Penguins had two set point set points at 24-22, but the Panthers pulled into a tie. The Penguins got consecutive points to take set two 26-24, to go into the break up two sets to none. Both teams did not hit as well in set two, the Penquins outhitting the Panthers .243 to .223. After two sets, Kolinske had 11 kills and Dunbar 10, and no other Panther had more than four.
The Panthers succeeded in getting out fast in set three, taking a 9-5 lead to force a Penquin timeout. The Penguins scored consecutive points to narrow the lead to 9-8, but the Panthers responded with a three point run of their own. The Panthers maintained a three to four lead through 15-11, when consecutive points by YSU forced a Panther timeout. The Panthers reopened a four point lead at 17-13, which the Penguins narrowed to 20-19. Consecutive points by the Panthers, the second on a Ruiz ace, prompted a Penquin timeout with the Panthers up 22-19. Milwaukee took their seconde timeout with a 23-21 lead. A Mattson kill gave the Panthers three set points. The Penguins fought off all three points, and then a Kolinske kill gave the Panthers their fourth set point. The Penquins fought off two more set points and then set up a match point of their own at 27-26, and then at 28-27, and finished the sweep with a block, 29-27.
After playing what Coach Johnson called their most complete match of the season against Cleveland State, the Panthers never really got in sync against the Penguins. The Panthers lost no ground in the league, however, because UIC broke through on the road at Oakland, and swept the Golden Grizzlies, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17.
Valpo swept Wright State and Cleveland State swept Green Bay, so the standings at the end of the weekend are as follows:
1: Milwaukee and Oakland, 4-1 3. Valparaiso and Youngstown State 4-2 5: UIC and Cleveland State, 3-3 7: Wright State and Green Bay, 0-5.
After the Panther's second last non-conference match, against Western Michigan on Tuesday in the Klotsche Center, the Panther will end their stretch of five matches in eight days by hosting Wright State on Friday and Oakland on Saturday.

mkepanthers.com/news/2014/10/14/WVB_1014144939.aspxThe Panthers beat Western Michigan for the first time in program history, winning three sets to one. They might have swept WMU, but a long run in set two put the Broncos into a lead they did not give up. Maggie Dunbar continued her streak of strong play, leading all scorers with 20 kills, a new career high for her. She hit .500 for the match. She came on at the end of last season and was MVP of the league tournament. She started 2014 as a reserve, but has now moved back into the starting six. She is currently fourth on the team in overall kills, and second in kills/set. She has double digit kills in her last three matches. Dunbar was joined in double figures by Hannah Blanchard with 12. The Panthers finish their string of five matches in eight days this weekend, hosting Wright State on Friday night and Oakland on Saturday afternoon. If Oakland and Milwaukee both win on Friday, Saturday's winner will be alone in first place in the league standings.

Milwaukee faced winless Wright State on Friday night.
The Raiders got out to a 4-1 lead, forcing a Panther time out. After two straight points by the Panthers, the Raiders pushed the lead to 6-3. Maggie Dunbar then served consecutive aces to tie the score at six, and the Panthers first block of the evening gave them a 7-6 lead and prompted a Raider timeout. Out of the timeout, the Raiders tied the score at eight. The Panthers retook a two point lead at 10-8 and 11-9, then gradually increased the lead to four at 16-12, when the Raiders took their second timeout. To this point of the set, Wright State was hitting well, but not serving or receiving serve well, having given up five points on three aces and two service errors. The Raiders narrowed the lead to 17-15, but the Panthers responded to push the lead to 20-15. The Panthers lead grew to seven at 23-16 when Wright State scored three consecutive points to prompt the second Panthers timeout. A Kayla Price kill gave the Panthers four set points at 24-20. A kill by Julie Kolinske finished set one, 25-21. Kolinske lead all scorers with six kills; Dunbar had four, and Ruiz two.
Milwaukee started quickly in set two, getting out to a 6-2 lead, but Wright State scored five straight points to take a 7-6 lead and prompt a Panther timeout. The Panthers tied the score at 8 all, but the Raiders retook an 11-9 lead and then a 13-11 lead. The teams continued to trade points, and the Panthers took their second timeout with the Raiders up 16-14. The Panthers managed to tie the score and 17 and at 18, but the Raiders retook a two point lead at 20-18. The Panthers again tied the score, and Wright State took a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Panthers continued their run and retook the lead briefly. The Raiders tied the score at 21 and 22, but the Panthers scored twice to get their first set point at 24-22, then finished the set on a block by Dunbar and Kaisa Mattson. Through two sets, the Raiders were outhitting the Panthers .269 to .250, and had seven blocks to the Panthers five. The Panthers again enjoyed a big advantage at the service line, with six aces and one error versus one ace and three errors for the Raiders.
The Raiders scored the first three points of set three. Hannah Blanchard got the Panthers on the board with her second kill of the night, followed by Kolinske's 16th kill. Her 17th and 18th kills brought the Panthers to within 5-4. Again Wright State established and maintained a two to three point lead, with the Panthers taking a timeout trailing 8-5. The lead grew to 10-6, and then five points at 14-9, when the Panthers took their second timeout, and then 17-10. The Raiders were hitting .444 at this point in the set. The Panthers continued to make errors, and the the possibility of a sweep was gone. The Raiders had a ten point lead at 23-13, and 24-14 for ten set points. They finished the set on a Kolinske hitting error, 25-14.
The Panthers responded by jumping out to a 4-1 lead in set four, then to a 7-3 lead, prompting a Raider timeout. Out of the timeout, the Raiders narrowed the lead to 7-6. A Nicole Latzig kill stopped the run. A Myanna Ruiz kill reopened a three point lead at 10-7, and a four point lead at 13-9. Two consecutive Raider points prompted the Panthers to take a timeout. The Panthers pushed the lead back to five at 17-12, prompting the second Raider timeout. The Raiders scored five straight to tie the score at 17, forcing the second Panther timeout. The Raiders took the lead at 19-18 on an ace, and then gave the lead back with a service error. The teams traded points and the lead. From a 22-all tie, the Panthers scored three points to win the fourth set and the match.
The Panthers improved to 5-1 in league play. Wright State fell to 0-6. Kolinske had 25 kills and hit .358 for the match. Ruiz had a double double with 11 kills and 19 digs. Blanchard and Latzig had eight kills apiece, contributing a number of big points in the fourth and deciding set. Kayla Price had a double double with 54 assists and 14 digs. A very young Wright State squad outhit and outblocked the Panthers for the match, but could not pull off the win.

www.horizonleague.org/blog/gb-uic-uwm-and-ysu-win-on-friday-in-hlvb.htmlElsewhere in the Horizon League on Friday night, Youngstown traveled to Cleveland. The Vikings won the first set, and then the Penguins won the next three sets and the match. The Penguins finish the first pass through the league at 5-2, having won four consecutive matches, including giving Milwaukee its only loss in league play so far. Cleveland is 3-4 after seven matches. Oakland went to Green Bay to play the Phoenix, who were winless in five league matches. Green Bay had played their opponents tough to that point, but had not been able to put together three sets of winning volleyball in a match. The teams split the first two sets, but Green Bay won the next two to win their first match of the league season against five losses. The Phoenix won set three easily, but had to overcome a four point lead twice in set four before winning 25-23. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the victory is that the Phoenix started two freshmen in place of two absent starters. Oakland fell to 4-2 in league play, and has lost consecutive matches, setting up their Saturday match with the Panthers. In perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, UIC beat Valparaiso in Valpo in four very closely fought sets, 27-25, 23-25, 31-29 and 25-23. Both teams are 4-3 at the midway point of the league season. UIC has now won three straight matches. In their 25 sets of league volleyball, UIC has played beyond 25 points six times; they specialize in keeping the score close. Valpo fell to 17-4 for the season, going into a Sunday non-league match with North Dakota State. The standings are now: Team | League Record | Milwaukee | 5-1 | Youngstown State | 5-2 | Oakland | 4-2 | Valparaiso | 4-3 | UIC | 4-3 | Cleveland State | 3-4 | Green Bay | 1-5 | Wright State | 0-6 |
Tomorrow, the Panthers host Oakland, and Wright State plays at Green Bay. A Panther win keeps them in first place alone; a Panther loss would put them into a tie with Youngstown State and Oakland. If Wright State continues to play volleyball against the Phoenix as they played against the Panthers, their match with Green Bay today could be fun to watch.

The Panthers started the match Saturday on a good roll, going up 4-2. Oakland's first kill made it 4-3. Oakland pulled into a 5-5 tie. A Myanna Ruiz ace opened a three point lead at 10-7. The Panther lead remained two to three to 13-11. Coach Johnson took a timeout when the Grizzlies tied the score at 13. The Panthers retook the lead out of the timeout with consecutive points, after which Oakland scored three straight to take their first lead of the set. The back and forth play continued. Coach Johnson took the second timeout with the Panthers trailing 18-17. Oakland opened a two point lead at 20-18, and the Panthers retied the score with consecutive points, then again at 21, on concsecutive points by Hannah Blanchard, and retook the lead on Julie Kolinske's fifth kill, at which point Oakland called their first timeout. Consecutive points gave Milwaukee their first set point at 24-22, and won the set on a Kolinske kill at 25-23.
Set two saw Oakland jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Blanchard got the Panthers on the board with her fifth kill; she was hitting .714 at that point. Oakland maintained their lead to 4-2 and then 5-3. The Panthers tied the score at five, but the Grizzlies recaptured a 7-5 lead, then 9-7, but the Panthers retied the lead at nine. Three straight Oakland points prompted a Panther timeout. The lead grew to four at 13-9 and then 14-10. Consecutive Panther blocks (Nicole Latzig & Kolinske, Latzig & Maggie Dunbar for the first two) narrowed the lead to 14-13 and lead to an Oakland timeout.
The Panthers took their second timeout when Oakland scored three straight to lead 17-14. Oakland opened a five point lead at 21-16 after a three point run and then 22-17. The Panthers scored consecutive points and prompted Oakland's second timeout. The Panthers narrowed the lead to two again at 23-21, but the Grizzlies scored the last two points of the set to head into the break with a split. The Panthers hit .400 in set two, but Oakland was at .500, and led in hitting after two sets .393 to .357. Blanchard led all scores with 10 kills (on .667 hitting). Kolinske had eight kills, and Ruiz and Latzig had six each. Oakland had five players with five or more kills.
Set three started with the teams trading points, to a 3-2 Panther lead. The Panthers maintained a one to two point lead to 6-4. The Grizzlies then tied the scire at seven, and took a 10-8 lead, and the Panthers took their first timeout. The Grizzlies kept the lead at two to 11-9, and then 12-10, and then a four point lead at 14-10 when the Panthers took their second timeout. Out of the timeout, consecutive Panthers points narrowed the lead to two. but Oakland retook a 17-13 lead. The Grizzlies' lead reached six at 21-15, then seven at 22-15. Oakland had seven set points at 24-17, and won 25-18 to go up two sets to one. Many of the Panthers' points in the set came off Oakland errors.
Oakland went up 4-0 to begin the fourth set. Consecutive points by the Panthers then tied the score at four all and then five all. Three consecutive Oakland points then forced a Panther timeout. The lead grew to four before consecutive points by Milwaukee narrowed the lead to two, but consecutive blocks by Oakland reopened a 13-9 lead, prompting the second Panther timeout. Three consecutive points by the Panthers narrowed the lead to 17-16, and Oakland took their first timeout. Out of the timeout, Oakland had consecutive blocks to retake a three point lead. The Panthers were never able to draw even, and lost the set and the match, 25-18.
The Panthers are now in a three-way tie with Oakland and Youngstown State, both of whom have beaten the Panthers this season.

The second half of the league season starts with a road trip to Valparaiso on Friday night and UIC on Saturday afternoon.
There is considerable parity in the league this year: five of the eight teams finished the first half above .500 in winning percentage. Oakland and Youngstown State have both been impressive in the first half, and both have beaten the Panthers. UIC and Valpariso are both one game back of the league lead. Green Bay and Wright State are both at 1-6, but both teams have improved through the first half of the season, and should not be overlooked. They may not finish high enough to make the league tournament, but both squads, young as they are, have the potential to play spoiler.
After a gaudy 13-1 start to the season, the Crusaders have found the going in league play to be much tougher than in past years. Two of the Crusaders' three losses against HL teams have come against teams ahead of them in the standings: Oakland and Milwaukee. Those were road losses. The last league match the Crusaders played was at home, and they lost in four sets to UIC. It's been tough to beat Valpo at home in the past, but the Panthers have done it. Valpo still has a strong, veteran team, so the Panthers will need to play well to win.
UIC has the longest current winning streak at four matches. They played the Panthers tough in Milwaukee, and have nearly always played the Panthers tough at home. They took one of four sets in the first meeting, and fought hard to win that set; they've continued to play tough since. They have one of the top hitters in the Horizon League in Stephanee Yancy, who has reached double digits in kills in every match she has played in this season. The Panthers will need to bounce back against the Flames.
Cleveland State-Oakland and Youngstown State-Wright State on Friday night will be broadcast on ESPN3, and Youngstown State-Oakland on Saturday will also be on ESPN3. The winner of the YSU-Oakaland match could find themselves alone in first place. The remaining matches this weekend will be on HLN.

The Panthers' match with Valparaiso started fairly even. The most notable aspect of the broadcast was that the Valpo broadcast team were actually according the Panthers some respect. Valpo opened a two point lead at 5-3 maintained it to 9-7. The teams kept trading points until the Panthers tied the score at ten all, and then took a 12-11 lead. The game remained close, and Milwaukee took the first timeout trailing 15-14. Both teams were hitting above .300 at the timeout. Coach Johnson took the second timeout when the Valpo lead reached three at 18-15. Out of the timeout, three consecutive Panther points tied the score, prompting the first Crusader timeout. Two more points for the Panther prompted the second timeout for Valpo. The Panthers got two more points working off the serves of Taylor Golabowski to take a four point lead at 23-19. The Panthers had four set points at 24-20, when a Valpo kill and a Panther hitting error fought off two of them. The Panthers finished the set with a Myanna Ruiz kill, 25-21. Ruiz dominated the latter stages of the set, and finished with 11 kills and a .526 hittng percentage; she was followed by Julie Kolinske who hit at a .556 clip with five kills on nine attempts, without an error.
Valpo opened a 3-1 lead to begin set two. The Panthers tied the score at three all on a mishandled overpass. Valpo re-opened a two point lead at 5-3, only to see the Panthers tie the score at five all. Play continued back and forth, until consecutive Crusader points opened a 9-6 lead, forcing the first Panther timeout. Out of the timeout, the Panthers narrowed the lead to one at 9-8, but Valpo fought back and maintained a two to three point lead. The Panthers took their second timeout with the Crusaders leading 16-13. The lead reached five at 18-13, when the Panthers again scored consecutive points to narrow the lead to three. Panther errors again pushed the lead out to six at 22-16. Valpo had six set points at 24-18, and finished the set at 25-19. Both teams cooled down considerably in set two, with the Panthers hitting .233 after the second set to Valpo's .220. The Panther serve reception and service were not as sharp in this match as they had been previously: the Panthers had five service errors to Valpo's three; Valpo had two aces to Milwaukee's one.
Valpo again got out to a lead to begin set three, leading early 3-1, then 5-1, prompting the first Panther timeout. The lead grew to 7-2, when a two point Panther run prompted a Valpo timeout. The Panthers took their second timeout when Valpo pushed the lead back to 9-4. Out of the timeout, the lead stretched to 11-5 when the Panthers got three consecutive points to narrow the lead to 11-8, and then two at 15-13. The Crusaders took their first timeout when the Panthers narrowed the lead to 16-15 on consecutive Crusader hitting errors. Out of the timeout, with Golabowski serving, the Panthers took a short-lived 17-16 lead, then opened a two point 19-17 lead, which they extended to 22-19, forcing the second Valpo timeout. Consecutive narrowed the Panther lead to 23-22, but the Panthers got to set point at 24-22. Valpo fought off both set points, but the Panthers got a third set point at 25-24 and won 26-24, on Dunbar kills number 12 and 13, to go up two sets to one.
Set four began with a Kolinske kill on an overpass. Back and forth play continued to a three-all tie. Two quick points by the Panthers opened a 5-3 lead, but Valpo rallied to keep the score close, tying the scores at six all. Three consecutive Panther points gave the Panthers a 9-6 lead, forcing Valpo to take their first timeout. The teams traded points, until Valpo scored three straight, forcing the Panthers to take a timeout. Two more Valpo points gave the Crusaders the lead, but the Panthers countered with three points to retake the lead. Back and forth play continued with ties at 13, 14 and 15 all. The Panthers then took a 17-15 lead on Ruiz's 20th kill of the night, prompting the second Crusader timeout. The Panthers maintained a two point lead to 21-19, and took their second timeout when Valpo got within one at 21-20. The Panthers re-opened a two point lead on a Dunbar kill, and got to match point at 24-22 and Ruiz's match-high 24th kill finished the match, three sets to one. Dunbar and Kolinske finished with 16 kills. The Panthers finished the match with a .233 to .219 advantage in hitting percentage, a 69 to 46 advantage in kills and an 88-76 advantage in kills.
The Panthers remain in first place in the league at 6-2, along with Youngstown State and Oakland, both of whom won tonight. UIC, who swept Green Bay, is alone in second place at 5-3; followed by Valpo at 4-4, Cleveland State at 3-5, and Green Bay and Wright State at 1-7.

The Panthers started their match with UIC well, getting the first four points, on the serving of Myanna Ruiz. The first three serves were not handled well, and the second hit the floor for an ace. The Flames came back to narrow the lead to 5-3. The score reached 7-3 on an ace by Kayla Price, but the Flames got consecutive points to 7-5. The lead remained two to 9-7, when the Flames scored three consecutive points, the last two on blocks, to force a Panther timeout with the Flames leading for the first time. The Panthers scored three straight points to retake the lead. The teams continued to exchange points, keeping the score close. The Panthers extended the lead to four at 19-15, forcing a Flames' timeout. Out of the timeout, the Panthers began to pull away, reaching set point at 24-17 on a Latzig kill off an overpass. The Flames fought off one set point, but Maggie Dunbar finished the set with a kill. The Panthers hit .321 for the set, and held the Flames to .121. Ruiz led the Panthers with four kills (on a .500 hitting percentage), followed by Julie Kolinske and Dunbar with three kills.
Set two saw the Panthers again get out to a quick lead, scoring three points on the service of Taylor Golabowski, but the Flames tied the score on their own three point run. The teams exchanged points, and the Flame took their first timeout with the Panthers up 5-4. Play continued close, with several ties. The Panthers took their first timeout the Flames up 15-13, and their second with the Flames up 18-14. The Panthers narrowed the lead briefly to 20-18 and then 21-20, but UIC rode another run to four set points at 24-20. Three consecutive points by the Panthers then forced a Flames' timeout. The Panthers then pulled into a tie at 24 all to force extra volleyball. UIC got back to set point three more times, only to see the Panthers tie the score, before consecutive points gave the Panthers their first set point at 28-27. A Flame hitting error then gave the Panthers a two sets to none lead at the break. Both teams cooled off in set two, with the Panthers hitting .102 versus .023 for the Flames.
The Panthers again started fast in set three, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. With the Panther lead at 5-3, the Flames went on a five point run, to take an 8-5 lead and prompt the Panthers first timeout. The Flames lead stayed at three through 10-7, when the Panthers went on a five-point run of their own to retake a 12-10 lead, prompting the first UIC timeout. The Flames played better out of the timeout, keeping the score close and forcing a tie at 17 all. The temas exchanged points to a 20 all tie, and then Panthers pulled away. UIC took their second timeout with the Panthers up 22-20, and the Panthers had four match points at 24-20. The Flames scored the next point, and the Panthers took their second timeout. Kayla Price ended the match with a kill.
The Panthers hit .200 for the match, led by Kolinske with 11 kills, followed by Dunbar with 10 and Ruiz with nine. The service game also favored the Panthers who had six aces to one for UIC. On defense, the Panthers had 14 blocks to seven for the Flames, but the Flames out-dug the Panthers 44-43.
The Panthers improved to 7-2 in league play, remaining tied for first with Oakland, who outlasted Youngstown State in five sets. Youngstown State fell to 6-3, putting them alone in second place. Valpo, who swept Green Bay, pulled into a tie for third place with UIC at 5-4. Cleveland State swept Wright State to take sole possession of fourth place at 4-5, followed by Wright State and Green Bay at 1-8.
The Panthers have one league match next weekend, traveling to Green Bay on Friday night. The Panthers then have a a final, three match home stand, beginning with a non-league match with Marquette (who had been getting votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll for most of the season, but had not made it into the Top 25) on November 4th, and hosting Youngstown State and Cleveland State on November 7th and 8th. The final weekend of the regular season will be on the road, at Oakland and Wright State. Matches with Youngstown State and Oakland will be key, as those two teams have given the Panthers their only league losses.
I will be interested to see how the weekend's results will affect the RPI rankings.
