collegesoccernews.com released it's pre-season division 1 poll yesterday, and UWM men's soccer is ranked 28th. With 6 of their 7 top scorers and 2 of the better goalies in the nation, they're poised to do some damage. However, I'm a little worried about their brutal non-conf schedule. collegesoccernews.com/index_files/page0002.htmBest of luck to the men's team this season, and here's to hoping they can finally break the second round curse.

If any Panthers team could ravage this Non-con schedule, it's THIS Panther team. Unless they get an extremely difficult bracket, also look for at least a Sweet Sixteen Panther squad this year.
If the NCAA tourney games UWM is in are moderately close, we'll get as many guys as we can going to support the team as well.
Look for a preview of Men's soccer next week in the Summer Issue of the UWM Post.

I didn't even know until my editor sent me an e-mail to tell me I was wrapping up the baseball season, and I offered to do the Fall Preview. I'm going long winded on the preview, but not too long, as I haven't been able to get off work before the deadline, so I will be unable to interview anyone. Oh well, I'll have enough chit-chatting this fall. I can't wait for the new Post in the fall.
Not only do we have a summer issue, but we're also going online. The plan is to have online blogs for the writers. That means, in sports, post game stories can be up in as little as 15 minutes following games. How cool would that be for fans at UWM games to find in-depth analysis of the game they were just at right when they get home?

Jimmy, are you really expecting Panther fans to be home fifteen minutes after the game. This is Milwaukee, son -- there are a LOT of bars between the Cell and, well, anywhere. By the way, carry that Post Sports standard well. I was a Post sportswriter too. Of course, that was over thirty years ago. Didn't have to worry about getting my blog up immediately after the games!

After attending a few UWM soccer games last year... I was intrigued enough to watch the British Premier League. That, of course, made me get pretty hardcore into the World Cup. So, as this season approaches for the Panthers, I actually call myself a soccer fan for the first time and I'm going to try to make it to every game I can.
I know that quite a few basketball fans on this board have no interest in soccer, but it'd be cool if we could make Engelmann a fortress this fall.

EPL - English Premier League. We need to have a few soccer games / board outings. Who is in?

Right... English Premier League. (I call anything in the UK British, almost by default.) Anyways, to have a thriving soccer program you must have fans with great singing voices. Let's get everyone together to practice "Roll out the Barrel" ;D

Justin's got a great point. If we really want to sport the brand of Milwaukee, we need to play like Milwaukee. We can incorporate Roll out the Barrel!

I went to about 7 games last year, and unfortunately they don't bring in very big crowds. Hopefully now that the games are at night we'll see more people come out. The first year I followed uwm soccer was in '02 when they went 19-1-1 and were 7 in the nation; it'd be nice to see that again

From some of your descriptions, it sounds like the crowds are not much better then when I watched the games back in the seventies. But I think this year I'll want to travel from the Madison area and try to catch one or two games. I've been watching the Madison Princeton 56ers in the National Premier Soccer League and have been really impressed by some of the UWM athletes on the team, especially Mickshl, Rampa and Francois. I would think if Madison can win the League championship against Sacramento this Saturday, it should be a great boost for those UWM players for the start of the upcoming college soccer season.

I'd say on average the games draw a few hundred fans... maybe 300 or so. It's not terrible considering most of them are at 3 in the afternoon, meaning most of the fans are either at work or at school (younger kids).
Hopefully at night games we'll see closer to 5 or 600 fans.

NCAA tourney games usually bring in like 1500 fans though.
