That was awesome news. How cool would it be to have a Panther battling for a spot on the World Cup team in 2010?

Tony Sanneh played for UWM in the 90s. He was on the 98 world cup roster and the 02 world cup roster.
Bob Gansler was as UWM coach in the 80s and was also the coach of the men's national team.
UWM has represented international soccer pretty well recently.

Yes, UWM's men's soccer program is one of the best in the nation, the fact that it doesn't draw any money/attendance is why few know about it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's one of the best in the nation, but it's been consistent, and that's all that you need.
Having lights will help; now people will be able to go to games with their kids after work, instead of missing them because they're at 3:30.

Although it's a matter of time before others will. The lights will help bolster attendence as well as FSC & CSTV showing some college games nationwide.

You are correct, to clarify I think Jimmy is the only graduate to actually see time in the world cup. Although it's a matter of time before others will. Tony Sanneh assisted on Brian McBride's first goal against Portugal in the 02 Cup. I believe that he started 4 of our 5 games. McBride even made a comment about how it was just like when they were playing in Milwaukee (McBride and Sanneh starred for a few years with the now defunct Milwaukee Rampage). Sanneh was fantastically solid in the '02 cup - some people even making the suggestion that he deserved a spot on the All-Star team that year. I didn't agree, but he was certainly very good. In any event, he had a much bigger impact than Jimmy Banks, who, while I like and appreciate very much, was never a very good player when held to the standards on the World Cup. Of course the US was so throughly outclassed in Italy 90, it was hard to say if any of our players on that team could do anything. Tony Sanneh was, and is, the best player to ever come out of UWM. p.s. Klinsmann for Coach!

I just checked. Actually, Tony played every minute of the 2002 Cup.

Yes, Tony is, and I would say by far, the best soccer player to ever come out of UWM. Right behind him would be Manny Lagos, who played for years in MLS. Then Manny's brother Gerard.
Tony is also credited among the US soccer community as being one of the "trail blazers," if you will, of having Americans play for top European leagues. Tony was one of the key members of the 1998 World Cup and turned his success in the tournament into a contract with Hertha Berlin of Bundeslegia (he then also played for Bayern Munich, or was it vice-versa?). Anyways, Tony is among the many unsung heroes of UWM athletics.

Jimmy Banks is more well-known for being one of the first big players that pushed the Milwaukee Wave into what they are today.
Tony Sanneh has been one of the most consistent players on the U.S. national team in the last decade.
The next UWM player to play MLS will probably be Steve Bode. I remember playing club against him when I was younger--he's insane. Plus as a freshman he was the only player to start every game. That says a lot.

Oh yeah, and if U.S. soccer doesn't land Klinsmann that's gonna set the program back at LEAST 10 years. All the MLS coaches are garbage.

Don't count out the biggest soccer family to come through UWM - The Dombrowski's.
Scott, Chad, Tighe, Neil, and Zeke have all played for UWM. MLS and the MISL are two leagues holding D-Brows. Neil just finished his eligibility with Kyle Zenoni, and Zeke will be a junior this year.
And, something to scare the pants off of Horizon League opponents - The youngest Dombrowski boy, Quinn, is tearing it up in middle school. Apparently he has the potential to be better than all of them. That definitely says something.
No one mentioned Antou Jallow, I thought he was a great player.

Antou is Swedish, so he'd play for their national team. I was just talking about U.S. players.
