WHAT JUST HAPPENED? The Panthers went up to Green Bay today to play the Phoenix. This year's Phoenix squad is younger, and was 7-5 in non-league play, so they are beatable. But I still expected the Panthers to lose, as they had not beaten Green Bay since 2006. The final was 75-64, Panthers. 75-64, Panthers. Not only did the Panthers win in Green Bay, they won by 11. As they did in their last game, another road victory against Nebraska-Omaha, the Panthers totally outplayed their opponents in the second half, turning a 9 point halftime deficit into an 11 point margin of victory. The Panthers held leads as high as 14 points. More importantly, when a Phoenix run cut the lead to six, the Panthers had an answer, pushing the lead back to double digits. They held on, hitting enough free throws at the end to keep the Phoenix at bay. Angela Rodriguez led the way with 23 points and 8 assists. Ashley Green contributed 15 points, and Avyanna Young added a double-double. Scott Warras kept saying. "Wow!" during the broadcast. i can't think of a better way to sum up this game. Great win for the program even over a "down" Phoenix team.

What?!?!? Wow! I would love to have heard Chris "Whining Boy" Roth's call of the game! If you have two hours to waste, he had the call on the HLN, which is available on horizonleague.org.

Horizon League tournament time. As the men's team did, the women's team has to travel to Dayton to take on Wright State. The game starts at 6:00 p.m. central time: www.uwmpanthers.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/031114aaa.htmlCould lightning strike twice? Looks like a long shot to me, but this team, at its best, can beat the top teams in the league. Go Pathers!

And so the season ends, not with a bang but a whimper. Wright State beat the Panthers by nine, but only by nine because the Raiders didn't shoot all that well in the first half.
i don't know where the season went off the rails, but it has been very frustrating. This team showed glimpses of ability to play with the best in the Horizon League. Most of the time, however, the opponents simply took over the game and won by double digits. Defense, which was supposedly the focus this year, was seldom effective.
It will be interesting to see how the off-season plays out.
The Panthers lose three players to graduation, two of whom played a significant role, and the third got more minutes at the end of the season as the bench got shorter. Angela Rodriguez will be tough to replace. Emily Decorah was not able to duplicate her record-setting season of a year ago, largely due to injury.
Among the remaining players, i have no information about who will be returning, so i have no idea how many roster spots Coach Rechlicz has to fill. One player left at the beginning of the season, and another left "to take care of her academics." Several players missed games due to injury and/or suspension. Certainly next year's team will be composed largely of players recruited by her. Her post-game comments after the tourney game focused on how much the staff has "changed the culture" of the program. It remains to be seen whether this change will result in better basketball and more wins.

Year 2? Yeah impatient may be an understatement Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards I wasn't expecting a conference championship. A better record would have been nice. At the end of the season the team looked at times like it was going through the motions. That may have been the result of a depleted roster. And there was little communication about why the roster had shrunk. I never found out who had been suspended or for how long, who was injured, and only found out well after the fact that one player had had academic difficulties.
