From the Journal Sentinel: Wimmer earns ride Derrick Wimmer, an athletic 6-4 sophomore who played at Whitefish Bay Dominican, has been awarded a scholarship.
Wimmer, who originally attended Chicago State, sat out last season after transferring. As a freshman, he averaged 10 points and three assists per game, and had 19 points in a loss to UWM.
"We wanted Derrick to walk on as a freshman but he wanted a scholarship," Pearl said. "He showed me something by going to Chicago State and he had a really good freshman year.
"It shows you can walk on at UWM and earn a scholarship. Justin Lettenberger did the same thing a few years ago."
I am a bit lost as far as to what scholarships we have available. Does this mean that one of next years scholarships is out because of Wimmer receiving one? Also, how many do we have left to give (including/excluding Wimmers)?

Hopefully this is a sign that Wimmer is becoming an impact player in practice. Pearl would not be giving out a scholarship if he did not see something! Wimmer certainly was hitting 3s Friday night. We could use a 7-8 man off the bench who can come in and bomb from the arch.

Fenske, all accounts I've seen already had Wimmer under scholarship (In fact, I believe this was merely a 'Catching-up-with-the-Panthers-after-nearly-seven- months-without-coverage" story). We have two open scholarships slots on this year's team and two more that will be created by the graduation of McCants and Wright (Sanders is not on scholarship). With the early commitments of Childress and Douglas, we still have two available for 2005 and we'll have seven open for 2006 (with the departure of Hill, Tigert, Pancratz, McCoy, Davis, Ford and Joah). Hope that helps.

Anyone have the recent status of Blount or Torre? Both have to be pretty high on our recruitment list.
Thanks, UWMfreak

Hey, Freak. Saw J.R.'s dad at practice Saturday and he said Walter was still being pursued by Loyola and UWM. By the way, he was very impressed with our big guys -- Ford and McCoy. Not sure of the latest on Torre, but we're still in the hunt.
