Just a couple random soccer concepts. For UIC, I used a slightly altered version of the Chicago city flag. I've felt for awhile that they should switch their shade of blue to the one actually used on the flag and build their identity around that, but I thought it turned out quite well regardless. For Milwaukee, I used the Bavarian flag pattern as a nod to the Bavarian immigrants who were some of the first, if not the first, to popularize soccer in the area. I left the rest of the shirt relatively plain because I wanted the focus to remain on the pattern.

If any of our soccer players see that you'll see it next fall.

I'll be more than happy to take this to some of the team and to show it to Kelderman too. Those jerseys would fly off the shelves in the bookstore. I really like the UIC jerseys too. The city flag concept is perfect for them.

How about leaving the shoulders black or gold and doing the black diamonds down the side of the shirts......

Both concepts are pretty darn good. The MKE jerseys look like there's a touch of the Bavarian flag in there, sans the colors for obvious reasons.

I mean I feel like they would fly off the shelves and the bookstore is able to charge a pretty penny for them. and they wouldn't even have to be the official jersey, sell a cheaper version that looks the same like they do for most replica jerseys. I never understood why we don't.

You have a short vision of the gift shop and branding initiatives. Within the last 10 years UWM sold replica jerseys (not exact, but close) of the team's top players. They didn't sell very well.

Personally, I hate Replicas that are close but you know its a replica, I'd rather buy an authentic replica or something that looks good.
Those old BBall Jerseys they sold, A. Would never fit me and B. Looked Bad.
If you do it right, I think it would sell.

Here is the thing with jerseys. People always claim they would buy authentic jerseys. Well, authentic jerseys are not cheap. There are not enough people that would say they would buy an authentic jersey, then actually buy it. The probability of getting stuck with a majority of an order of them is fairly high at this point. Eventually, I think authentic jerseys will happen but its going to require more than just a handful of hardcore fans in order to overcome/eliminate the financial risk.

Some of those decisions have been ill-advised, to say the least. There should be more communication between the bookstore and the Athletic Department on these matters.
Or perhaps the merchandise has not been promoted aggressively enough. i don't visit the website much, and i don't see a lot of printed advertising touting specific items, but possibly i'm not in their target demographic.
i'm not a huge soccer fan, so replica soccer jerseys are not a must-buy for me. Replica basketball jerseys might draw more interest, but replica sportswear usually costs more than i like to pay, even for authenticity.

If they do sell them i really hope they do the shorts too. I love authentic college team shorts. Haha.
But yeah i understand not wanting to be stuck with a lot of a product that isn't selling. But why don't they just order less than normal for a trial run.

Also, i feel like the whole ironic clothing movement (not a huge fan but it definitely is big right now) with lacrosse jerseys and the such. I feel like even non soccer fan college kids would buy a soccer jersey just to follow that trend. I know a lot of my friends would.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Yes, the Bavarian flag pattern is intentional, and I noted that in the original post. I figured it was appropriate given the Bavarian heritage of Milwaukee and the fact that Bavarian immigrants were one of the first groups to introduce soccer to the area. I'll be more than happy to take this to some of the team and to show it to Kelderman too. Those jerseys would fly off the shelves in the bookstore. You definitely have my blessing! That would kick so much ass if something I designed actually got used by a Division 1 NCAA team. Regarding jerseys in the bookstore... I think the reason the basketball jerseys didn't sell is because they were obviously cheap, Walmart-quality knock-offs that only vaguely looked like what the team actually wore. They weren't even made by adidas. I have no doubt that if they hadn't cheaped out and gotten some replicas of similar quality as the ones sold at Champs or in Eastbay (read: actually made by the same manufacturer who makes the teams' uniforms), they would've made their money back many times over.

UWM has a deal with Burghardt's. I'd be willing to bet that if the bookstore facilitated it with the go-ahead from licensing, they could sell them on an as-ordered basis. That is, you have some kind of small station or poster in the bookstore displaying the uniforms telling people if they'd like to order them, they can go to the service desk and fill out the form, pay up front, and they'll have their jersey in 3-4 weeks.
It may not be the quick turnaround they're asking, but the fans who want the jerseys will be willing to wait, the bookstore will not be left with a pile of jerseys unsold, and Burghardt's makes some more money on their UWM account. I know a couple managers at Burghardt's that would love to see that happen.
The other good thing is this doesn't have to be limited to basketball. Baseball uniforms are also made by Burghardt's.
Now we just have to convince coeds on campus that it's the cool thing to wear volleyball uniforms everywhere.
