The meeting lasted over an hour and a half. I noted a few key aspects of it that have relevance to issues that are currently being discussed on here.
In regards to the Bennett-Marquette hiring Bud said he was initially contacted by Cords on Monday (I'm assuming last week). After discussions on Monday and Tuesday with Bennett, Bud said these things about Bennett:
-That he was "very interested in a career move."
-That he "really wanted the job."
-and that his "mind was made up."
He cited the tuition paid for as a major factor in Louie's decision as well as the Big East Conference.
I asked him if Stan was discussed as or offered to replace Louie. Bud said that Stan didn't show any interest in taking over.
He did say that in our search for a new coach we have a strong candidate here that alot of alumnus etc would like to see become the head coach. I'm not sure if he said the exact name "Jon Coleman": but he did say that Louie would want him as well because he was his top recruiter. He did say that he would be requesting that they start an outside search but they normally prefer to promote from within.
In other words judging from his body language and word selection, I predict Coleman will be hired in the next couple weeks. (again I'm only speculating on this)
In other news, the Chair asked Bud about the possibility of a Panther Logo at center court. Asst AD Chuck Lang immediately responded with "there will NEVER be a Panther logo on in the middle of the court." He cited US Cellular's advertising deal, floor panel concerns, and most notably the Arena's sentiment that even though we're the only basketball team that plays there, its not our court. The board was pretty concerned with this response. Bud attempted to quell the concerns with his assurance that they will look into it and that you should "never say never." Chuck's body language showed that Bud's claims were unrealistic.
The last matter of note was a presentation by Kevin O'Connor who deals with the sports information notably the media guide and website. Included in his report was news that our website provider CSTV had been bought out by CBS which in turn means (or at least should mean) more video content online. He cited Nebraska's Spring Football practices being online as an example. Media coverage was an issue that was brought up and in response he gave the same response we have all heard. 1. Media coverage is dependant upon game attendance and 2. Call in or email editors/newspapers to inform them of big events or thank them for actually covering them.
Good student turnout at this meeting. 5 of the 6 possible seats have been filled and all 5 newly appointed members were present. I would assume that the 6th spot will fill up quickly but if you want to try and apply, go to the SA website from the UWM homepage.
