Good to see were gonna pull out a win.
We looked ugly early and into the 2nd half but we finished strong and I think this is something we can build on.
Plus we were playing without Kaylon so I expect us to look better when he returns.

Initial reactions:
Negatives: - It took our team WAY too long to run anything that resembled a feasible offense - We had some bad fouls in the beginning of the game. Both James and Demetrius got into early foul trouble, which hurt - Too many turnovers - Too many long stretches of bad shot selection - Very poor defense until the last fourth of the game
Positives: - our team banded together and made adjustments as the game progressed - Shaq Boga had an excellent debut with 6pts, 6 boards, 3 assist, and only 1 turnover - Evan Richard runs and leaps like a deer. He will be a big part of our program the next 4 years - Very impressed with the poise of Paris Gulley, he played an effective game - Kyle Kelm has become more aggressive on the boards and more assertive on offense -JaRob McCallum can still take over games and make it look easy. I’d love to see more consistency from him in his junior year, not the same feast or famine we are used too. -Although Jame Haarsma will not replace the scoring output or inside presence of Anthony Hill, he will clean the boards just as well. 7 rebounds in 14 minutes is pretty impressive. -We managed to mount a convincing comeback win without two of the best players in the league in Tony Meier and Kaylon Williams.
I’m excited to see what our group of starters can do after logging more minutes together. It’s too early to predict how the team will do going forward, but I think our biggest questions come on the defensive end.
Good game Panthers.

What I took away from this game is that we were struggling to learn how to play without our two best players. And then we figured it out. And we won.
To me the foul situation looked like this: Two of the three refs were absolutely miserable in the first half, and their poor officiating had a pronounced favor toward Parkside. Then, in the second half, the only good ref on the floor took it upon himself to even things out a bit. He blew his whistle at absolutely every opportunity, especially in the early part of the half, giving UWM a huge momentum and free throw advantage to make up for how terrible his companions were.

Also, Parkside is a good team, especially on defense. They took away a surefire two-handed dunk by Demetrius at one point; blocked it clean out of his hand.

Agree with pretty much everything fan and King have said. This was a sloppy game for the majority, but as I said before the game started that I like playing Parkside because they're not a team we can roll over and gain nothing from. The lack of a low post presence is troubling, but hopefully that will clear up as some of the guys get used to the (D1) college game.
Don't know much about Southwest Minnesota St, but hopefully it will be another game that allows us to find out who we are so to speak. Strong finish or not, the game we saw today isn't going to produce many wins on our schedule.

The lack of a low post presence is troubling I completely agree with this statement. I think one of the many ways Anthony Hill was able to impact our offense was having the ability to start offensive sets with a touch to the paint. This slowed down our offense a bit and was conducive to a more calculated and pass-oriented offense. I think our team will adjust to the reality of not having an Anthony Hill, and make due with our current line up. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kyle Kelm become a more integral part of our offense.

There wasn't a post game because Haarsma played 14 minutes.

With Kaylon, Tony and Lonnie out you knew it would be a little choppy, but there were a lot of positives too.
Two keys to the win. First, our coaches obviously were paying attention when they played Northwestern in the NIT last year and scrimmaged them recently. When we were down 49-40 Rob pulled out the 1-3-1 trap with Ryan Allen at the point and it completely disrupted the Rangers. That was the turning point. I love that look, especially with the athletes we are able to put on the floor this year.
Second -- Evan Richard. You cannot keep him off the floor. He is going to be so much fun to watch for the next four years. In fact, walking away thinking about watching Kyle, Evan, Shaq and JJ for the next three years put a big smile on my face.
Damn it was great to see basketball again!

We had a tremendous amount of youth on the court tonight. Lots of first year players or transfers. Evan was excellent. I was pleased with Haarsma. Shaq will be good. Since he's a true freshman, he handled the ball quite well tonight, better than I thought. His offense was not very good though. I think JJ can be very good. Did we get the word about if JJ is redshirting or not? Kyle continues to develop nicely and looked like he was trying to lead on the court in the absence of Tony and Kaylan. For as crappy of a lineup that was, they did ok in the end. We need to get these guys time on the court to develop confidence.

Shaq needs to grow up. When the team doctors are trying to help you off the floor, don't push them away. I hope this is not a sign of things to come from this young man. Shaq played ok, but when the game was on the line, Paris was in there at point guard. Box Score uwmpanthers.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2011-2012/mbbex1.html

Isn't Shaq 17-18 years old? He acted like a 6 year old. When you are holding your knee on the floor and yelling in pain, let the doctors do their job. Don't push them away.

I like to see him upset..means that the game mean a lot to him, he wants to play and gets mad because he's hurt.
He calmed down once we was off the floor and the doc took a look at him....IMO that passion is something I love to see!
