Ooops. Forgot to give you the rest of the story....
Former UWM star plays for national team again
May 20, 2004
- Tony Sanneh, a former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer star and veteran of international and World Cup play, was recently named to the United States squad in its final warm-up game before 2006 World Cup qualifying next month. Sanneh, a defender, is one of 18 players on the roster that will face Honduras in the international friendly in June. The match will be the final tuneup for the US before CONCACAF World Cup qualifying starts on June 13.
Sanneh, who recently returned from an 18-month layoff due to a back injury, recently led his FC Nurnberg squad to a promotion into Germany's top league, Bundesliga 1. A veteran of international action, Sanneh played for the US in the 2002 World Cup and earned starts versus both South Korea and Japan. The 1993 Mid-Continent Conference MVP finished his Milwaukee career as the program's all-time leader in points (138), goals (53) and assists (32). With Sanneh on the roster UWM advanced to the 1990 NCAA Tournament and won a total of 49 games from 1990-93.
The current UWM soccer squad is scheduled to see Sanneh and his Nurnberg squad in its upcoming trip to Europe. The Panthers, who will open the tour with seven games in the Czech Republic, will head to Nurnberg on June 7 and will play games versus the Nurnberg U-19 team on June 8 and the Nurnberg U-23 B squad on June 9.
