From NY Post: George Mason coach Jim Larranaga is meeting with his players Thursday night, a strong sign he is leaving to take the head coaching job at Miami, a source told The Post. Larranaga, a Bronx native, led George Mason to the 2006 Final Four and this year led the Patriots to a first-round win over Villanova before losing to No. 1 seed Ohio State. Larranaga played at Archbishop Molloy then Providence. He compiled a 273-164 record at George Mason and an overall college coaching mark of 470-334. He would replace Frank Haith, who left Miami for Missouri. Read more: www.nypost.com/p/sports/college/basketball/george_mason_coach_leaving_for_miami_A2jPE1xg3uUsETvk0pSg6I#ixzz1KCYxa1RG

I'm amazed he stayed at George Mason this long.

He was making $525,000 a year there. That's not bad coin.
With the Providence offer, he was weighing a quick jackpot and uncertainty vs. wealth and great stability.
I'm still waiting to hear official word of this before I have a full reaction.

Looks like the Rob Jeter Watch will next be discussed in 2012.
I'm expecting a very good season coming up.

Larranaga has done a lot for GMU, and really should have been making more money. Even though GMU is now a better program than Miami, Miami will make Jim pretty wealthy, and at this stage in his career it makes sense.
I didn't think this move made sense for Rob because he has far more basketball to coach in his career than someone like Jim Larranaga. Miami is the real winner here. They lose a much inferior coach than they are getting, that is why you can never panic until the process works itself out, then potentially panic.

The most interesting fact in that article were the attendance figures. The year after the FF run, GM drew an average of 6,800 fans. Last year it was down to 5,900, for a program that was still NCAA caliber. I think Butler's numbers last season were similar, and they don't even compete with a University in their town in a high D1 league, as we do.
I just mention this because I think it helps to keep our attendance numbers in perspective. We are working to grow the numbers, but at our level it would be fabulous to average 6,000 fans a year. That's also why the on-campus arena has to be "right-sized" somewhere near that number.

Fran,
You could not be further from the truth on the competition for GM. In the immediate area you have both Georgetown and George Washington and if you go just a bit further you have Maryland. All programs within about 30 minutes of each other. The add in the fact you have a large number of VA Tech and UVA alumi in the area. Plus, GM is in the outskirts of DC metro so most people would have to go out of the city for a game rather than come in. Then they have a far more fragmented campus than even Milwaukee would once the engineering and public health campus are built.

I was referring to Butler, not GM.

Sorry....but Butler has about 1/6 the students Milwaukee does.

The numbers don't lie. This is what really successful mid-major programs can expect to draw. Whether they are small private schools or huge public schools.
