Torre Johnson had a DUI and got ran out of OK State. By the Suttons, no less. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I think he had other issues and the DUI was the last straw. The Coach Jeter gave him a 2nd chance and he didn't take advantage of it.

Wasn't Flowers considered to be the better talent than Johnson? i seem to remember alot more expectation that Flowers would wind up being a bigger contributor to the Panther's success.
Johnson was considered the bigger get out of high school. He was far more athletic than Flowers, and an all-around gigantic human being. Flowers was the better immediate contributor, in part because the center position was open for business, whereas Torre and Paige had the PF/SF position cemented at the start of the year. Johnson's time on the bench exposed him as a whiny baby, and I think that rubbed off on Flowers seeing as how they were such good friends. uwmplanner: Ricky had a DUI, didn't he? And Ant got benched several times throughout his career, including once this year. His attitude got in his way several times, including his sophomore year when he recorded that tremendous 20-point game and then almost completely faded away.

Kevin Johnson was a tremendous athlete but a terrible basketball player. No shot, no handle, no nothing but leaping ability. He had no business being on any D1 roster.

Those things are coachable. Hell, Derrick Rose didn't have a good jumper until sometime this year. And look at the difference between Souter's jumper last year and this year. Johnson's problem was that he was unwilling to learn.

I think this is what's called a thread hijack.

I guess. The point is that Jeter had assembled a massive amount of talent that season (including Pearl holdover Derrick Ford, remember), and the fact that he was willing to risk the immediate future of the program for the sake of maintaining his role as a mentor and disciplinarian is to his credit.

Guess I overlooked due to the Wisconsin in me and that we forgive DUI's more than other states. Still I don't think that is as bad as stealing cars or beating up girlfriends. Yeah he sat Hill down I'm not sure what the reasons were for it. The Simeon kids refused to practice at times and by all accounts weren't good teammates. This did start out as a good thread, didn't mean to assist in hijacking it. I am looking forward to Tuesday.

I'll try and reroute this conversation. Fran, I share your feelings about this game relative to whatever happens next. Winning tomorrow, simply put, is everything... It's very difficult for Milwaukee to get to the NCAAs no matter what year we're talking about. There are only two routes, and both are daunting:
1. Win the Conference Tournament Championship 2. Amass an incredible non-conference record against top notch quality, and finish no worse than second or third in the Horizon (and finishing third may be a stretch).
Now this could change as the Horizon continues to improve. Butler isn't going to drop off anytime soon, Milwaukee is reasserting itself at the top, and Detroit, Valpo, and CSU all can contend. But right now, this is what we have for options.
Milwaukee was on the doorstep to bigger things when Pearl took this University to places it never dreamed possible. Yes, Jeter took them back, but with Pearl's guys. A win tomorrow liberates UWM from Pearl like Aaron Rodgers liberated Green Bay from Brett Favre (albeit on a much smaller scale).
This is all about building a program. Building a program that can compete year in and out. It's about gaining and keeping fans. It's about proving that Milwaukee basketball is worth paying attention to.
Now we can certainly get greedy should things go well. I for one think this is a team that could give somebody fits in the Big Dance. But that's a conversation for another day, should we be lucky enough to have it.
To the ones that didn't enjoy this before, savor the moment. Get there early, wear your colors, be loud, have fun. You never know when it's coming back.

Love the OP in this thread!
This has been building and building and now ITS HERE.
We need to win this game.
I have rooted for Milwaukee since I was a kid and I loved the tourney years. However when I became an actual student my love for the Panthers jumped up a notch. Besides completing my degree the one other thing I wanted to get out a college was a chance to see Milwaukee play for the Horizon League Championship. I'll admit I've had my worries that it wouldn't happen but as I stand here now as a sophomore THIS is that chance to play for the right to dance. Since we beat Youngstown nothing has mattered to me more then getting to this game. It is roughly 27 1/2 hours away and I can barely wait. I may not get another shot to see this as a student again so tomorrow will be a night that I will NEVER forget!

Tommrrow is huge. When we went to the Sweet 16, we didn't capitalize on it, we all sat in bed and cried as Bruce took off to Tennessee.
We didn't push athletics and push for alumi to come home, come back to Milwaukee (DONATE) and push captiol projects (arena, athletic villiage ect). Hopefully, this is a stone for Rick to take the AD forward this time.
This is the spark, we just need to throw some gas on the fire.

You guys should have taken all this passion with you to tonight's radio show.
I know only one thing:
We're going to need everybody unified and in full throat for tomorrow's title game. We can -- and I believe will -- make a difference.
Believe to achieve, Panther fans!
