The take a bullet quote was strong, and I've told backer that in person. But the logic that you can't also root for Wisconsin is the equivalent of an older sibling throwing a temper tantrum when their new sibling gets attention. Chris (backer) and I are season ticket holders, and have no plans to stop. We've talked about upgrading to courtside seats and donating money to the Milwaukee program once it's more financially reasonable for us. If that's still not enough for you, I'm sincerely sorry. But if you're going to tell people that they can't root for both Milwaukee last night and Wisconsin this afternoon, they're going to side with who they grew up with (for Chris and most people, Bucky). Put it this way, if someone walks into a Panther game wearing a Wisconsin t-shirt don't kick them out for having the gall to support another team (think of the children!!), instead give them a Milwaukee shirt, treat them to a good show, and they'll come back more often.
Those Marquette (and others) fans who rip us for supporting Milwaukee, are they ever successful in making us want to hop on the MU bandwagon? No. They have the opposite effect. They make MU look bad. Exactly why we need to use a different approach.

The more bandwagon fans we get, the more tickets we sell. It's a sign of success, quite frankly. The Miami Heat sure do have a few bandwagon fans this year.

Exactly why we need to use a different approach. As long as the majority of our fan base also count themselves among the Bucky Badger fan base, we can never grow to our full potential. Like I said, I was sorry to single out Chris, but it's one of those things that goes to show how long our program has to go.

Well, I don't know guys. My job sent me down to that area once. Of course I had to drive around UNC and Duke just to check it out. That's a nice area of the country over there. If one of those schools recruited me and wanted to give me a full ride scholarship, whew... I don't know if I could turn it down.

I have relatives in Chapel Hill, and seriously considered moving down there for my senior year of high school to establish residency and go to UNC with in-state tuition. UNC campus is one of the best campuses in the country. You're driving along in pine tree-lined roads, then boom ... a kick-ass campus. I like to refer to North Carolina as "a warmer Wisconsin."

Like I said, I was sorry to single out Chris, but it's one of those things that goes to show how long our program has to go. He's right. I agree with most of what Jimmy has said on this thread. The national power part is a pretty tough goal, but it depends on what your definition is of national power. I used to follow Marquette intently when I was younger. I watched the Badgers and didn't mind them either way, but Marquette was my team in high-school. The first NCAA game I ever went to was Marquette vs Louisville, Dwade vs. Reece Gaines, and I was hooked. D wade is still my favorite pro. This year when Marquette beat us did I say, "oh shucks we lost to marquette, at least they will get a good resume road win and this will help them out ;D ." HELL NO! I said those lucky **cks better pray to god they don't see us again this year. I dislike Marquette and Hate Wisconsin. I love hearing, "how can you live in Wisconsin and not like wisconsin'? , because my reply is always, "how can you live in Milwaukee and not like Milwaukee? Like it or not fans like that are what this program needs. Fans that pledge their allegiance to Milwaukee, and have high expectations because if the panthers don't play long into March, we don't have another team to fall back on. IMO people that Tattoo the panther on them and jeer Marquette are the people who will be in the stands during thick and thin. Again people aren't all easily branded and categorized. I understand why Fran would like both his teams and hate Marquette. I understand why other people who witnessed Marquettes final 4 run as a fan, would have a tough time not loving them. All I'm saying is that in order to gain a more permanent fan base, we need to develop rivalries in state and act like we belong. Thats all

I have a very simple reason for loving both the Badgers and the Panthers -- I have attended and received degrees from both schools, and have been a fan of both teams since the early 1970s. (Look at my signature line. Probably not a lot of people on this board who watched the Panthers play in Baker Fieldhouse and the Badgers play in the Wisconsin Fieldhouse.)
Before that, as a kid, I actually was a big Marquette fan. Why? Because I knew a lot of people associated with the MU program -- and the Marquette team was good. But I grew up and put aside childish things. I don't hate Marquette (that's a silly word for sports rivalries). I just prefer Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Greatly prefer them -- to the point that if something is bad for Marquette's program but good for Milwaukee or for Wisconsin, then I want that thing to happen. Otherwise I don't care about them at all, except that the Marquette AD is a good friend of mine and for his sake I hope things always go well enough for them that it reflects well on him.
The "Big" East, however, I have no use for. It's a bloated, overhyped, geographically and institutionally irrational conference that will absorb at least two or three slots this year that should go to more deserving teams.

I always root for the Badgers except for when they play us. The idea that you can only be a fan of one school and somehow UWM suffers if you also like UW-Madison seems silly.

Because it is silly. There are plenty of Badgers fans who are casual Marquette fans, and vice versa.
