Everything is falling into place. Let's see how this year compares to the previous seasons:
1. Disappointing non-conference season. Check. 2. Unsettled rotation going into conference. Check. 3. Blow out by Wisconsin. Check. 4. Overzealous fans oversell team in the preseason. Check. 5. Talk already of "just wait until next year." Check. 6. Few remaining UWM fans are arguing. Check. 7. Placing too much pressure on high school "saviors" who have never worn a Panther uniform yet. Check. 8. Debby Downer (me) already doubting. Check. 9. Fran tells everyone we have "lost our senses" (waiting...) 10. Mid year conference run fuels overblown expectations. Check. 11. "Only the conference season matters." Check.
Looks like a typical season thus far.

Looks like a typical season thus far. Let's look at some things that have NOT happened this year (in no particular order): The Italy trip was not cancelled. No incoming players failed to qualify academically. No star players have been arrested and kicked off the team. No incoming Freshmen have been arrested before they even matriculated. No star recruits have come in, had bad attitudes and then left the team and the school before semester break. No Starters have been seriously injured. No key backups have been seriously injured. No players are out for the season. I'm sure there is more but if ever there were a year free of the typical (and non-typical) excuses that usually surround athletic programs, this is it. All players healthy (as far as we know) and in place with an extra long preseason. That's what concerns me so.

How on earth could you miss my favorite line of BS?! "Only the conference season matters." Ah, yes. A very glaring oversight missing from that list. Three games left of non-conference play before the heart of the Horizon schedule hits ... and still no clue as far as a consistent rotation. But there I go taking leave of my senses.

I don't know if #6 is right...a lot of the Jeter-bashers and Pearl-dead-enders have found their way out of the woodwork and back to the board.
Of course, it's hard for those who stand behind coach Jeter (including me) to keep arguing. It's to the point where I'm not even going to argue because a large portion of what's being said here is right.
There are typical overreactions, of course, but there are many fans who have level heads and are putting correct thoughts out there.
I'm not giving up. I'm going to continue supporting the team. But they're making it damn hard to do that.

Boy, I go away on business for a few days and the alleycats start screeching.
Of course, the last two performances were pretty screech-worthy.
But Jimmy has it right. As a fan, I recognize the issues but these are still the guys who represent us. I enjoy following and supporting them and will continue to do so.
So lets focus on some positives. First, it's a great group of kids who truly want to do well. Second, in different games we have seen very good performances from a number of players including Ant, Tony, Ja'Rob and Lonnie, and some very good signs from a lot of others. We have talent on this team, and some real depth. Obviously the coaches haven't found the right mix yet, but I think it's in there and I think they will find that mix. Our recruiting the last few years has been terrific. And as rough as these last two games were, they were against arguably the two best teams we will play this year.
I understand all the frustration and venting, but as many have observed the calls for a coaching change are pointless. It's simply not going to happen. And it's still very early in a season in which we are 1-1 in conference. If you're a fan, be a fan in good times and tough times. I'm sure the guys would really appreciate any support they could get at the DePaul game on Tuesday. It's an easy drive.

I've decided to break my silence for a moment just to get a few thoughts down. Many of you know of my bewilderment at rotations and regressing statistics (how in the world anyone goes from being a 78-percent free-throw shooter to one who shoots 38 percent is beyond baffling), so I thought I'd share my emotions with all who read this board.
I will be proudly at DePaul on Tuesday and will continue to support this program no matter who is in charge. I think it's essential that we do this for ourselves. If not us, who will? After all, it's always been hard to be a Panther fan ... and now perhaps more than ever. Or at least since the 1997-98 season, my lone year in the athletics department, when the team went 3-24.
Though I've been through worse (1994-95 was another 3-24 year), I've never perhaps felt lower about the program and its prospects than I have the last two games (after all, there are advantages in place that simply didn't exist 10 to 12 years ago). While listening to Bill's broadcast of the Cleveland State game, I found myself on the verge of tears ... twice.
I want the players to feel what I feel and what I suspect many on this board share. I have a loathing for losing and a total intolerance for losing badly. It makes me physically ill. I want our players to feel the same way. If you're not out there giving your all every minute of every game, you frankly shouldn't be on scholarship. Leadership is lacking as at no time I can recall.
I'm tired of being ridiculed about my support of my favorite team from people that I know and otherwise respect. It's sometimes exhausting trying to explain to them what a program in the H League can accomplish, a program like Butler, Cleveland State or Milwaukee circa 2003-06.
I want this program to win more than I want a Super Bowl for the Packers or a Rose Bowl title for the Badgers. In short, I want this cast of very likable people to get this figured out pronto.
I'll now resume my periodic wisecracks about unspeakably abysmal performances.

Thank you dylan and Fran for your honest and very valid perspectives. Last night I tried to share some of the frustrations expressed on the D-Board the last few days: www.milwaukeepanthertracks.com/2010/12/milwaukee-goes-to-madison-and-gets.htmlI think many of us including myself were blinded by Butler's success last season. Let's face it- an at-large bid is not going to happen- for anyone in our league this season, including Butler (unless they go undefeated in League again, which ain't gonna happen). If we can shape up- our NIT hopes aren't necessarily doomed... but WMU and FAU did reduce those chances. Just please- don't give up on these guys. We have a lot more games against a lot more beatable teams left to play yet.

As I have said in another thread I can handle the losses and I will continue to support the team and promote the team and games to others, though I doubt I will be able to get anyone to attend another game this year. Having said this, that quote in the Journal is bothersome. Excuses like that cannot be tolerated at this level. So I will support this program as best I can, but that support only goes as far as those in charge take responsibility for what happens on the court.

Not so fast, Victor.
Cleveland State (11-0, RPI 17) is still very much alive for an NCAA at-large berth with road games remaining against West Virginia and South Florida. Say the Vikings win one of these, their Saturday night road game at No. 41 Sam Houston State, 13 league games and a game in the H League tournament. Don't you think they'll make the field with 27 wins?
Butler (4-4, RPI 36) is also not dead yet in spite of its record. Remember that the Bulldogs still play Utah and perhaps Florida State and Baylor in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawai'i. Say the Bulldogs take these three games, defeat Mississippi Valley State and Stanford at home the next two Saturdays, win 13 league games and a game in the H League tournament and end with 23 wins. Given their reputation and ranking, don't you think they'll warrant inclusion?
Everyone else, Panthers included, is playing for a March miracle run. The NIT is NOT in play for us, not since our home loss to Western Michigan of the lightly regarded MAC West. Sorry.
