After playing the University of Oklahoma tough for 35 minutes, and overwhelming Chicago State, the Panthers played in a weekend tournament in the Twin Cites, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Saturday's game against the host team featured poor shooting, and the Panthers lost by 23. Sunday the Panthers were still cold from the floor (22 per cent shooting), but managed to win the game against South Dakota on the free throw line. They shot 28-31 for the game (90.3 per cent). Lindsay Laur scored 15 of her team-leading 24 points from the free throw line. She was perfect for the day, tying the best performance in school history for free throw percentage (Corrin Von Wald shot a perfect 18-18 years ago).
So if there is any question about the importance of hitting your free throws, this game will serve as an illustration. The Panthers are now 2-2 on the season.

Last time out the Panthers beat a winless Western Illinois squad by jumping out to a 26-8 lead and then holding out just long enough to learn to handle WIU's press, at which point they opened up a comfortable lead and won by 15.
Angela Rodriguez was impressive with her passing...i remember at least two plays on which she no-looked a pass to an open teammate for a layup. The first one was a touch pass. She just missed finishing with double digit points to keep a streak alive.
Tonight Bradley (3-3) comes to town. Bradley's losses are to quality schools, so i expect this game to be closer.
In other news, the Panthers announced five LoI signings for 2011-12: uwmpanthers.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/112910aaa.html
As they have five seniors on the squad this year, i expect they've pretty well filled the roster for next year.

As the Panther women are 3-8, isn't Sandy Botham one of the highest paid coaches in the HL. Why pay all that money for 3-8?

Uh, yeah. Safe to say GB is still the dominant program in the horizon after today....

Safe to say we have another coach not living up to a high salary.

Safe to say we have another coach not living up to a high salary. Unfortunately, there is that too. Unless they go on a tear the rest of the season and somehow win the conference tournament, I would think that she may not be back next year.

Without debating the merits of either of these comments I would point out that the Women's basketball team has represented UWM with sportsmanship, class and more often than not- extreme effort. To marginalize these facts with a snide comment regarding compensation is a cheap shot.

No one denies that they play hard, with sportsmanship and class but the program is at a pretty big crossroad. They have the pieces but there hasn't been much improvement fundamental wise from the start of the season. I keep seeing the same mistakes being made game to game. Yeah, they won 6 of 8 after the 9 game losing streak but it's not good enough to make up for a 9 game losing streak.
That first Green Bay game was terrible. Sure they played much better vs. the Phoenix yesterday but they still ended up losing by almost 20 after the Phoenix finally started capitalizing on Panther mistakes and turnovers. Green Bay is light years ahead of this program right now. That crowd yesterday was 3/4th Green Bay fans because they travel so well to support that program. That was most likely the highest attended home game this season. I should know, I've been to all but one game.
As was/is seen with the men's program, something needs to draw people to attend games and frankly, it's winning. I go because I support the program and the university as a student but not everyone has that same type of spirit.

In the end, Sandy's job will hinge on performance, as it should. This is Division I. If you want to talk about sportsmanship, class, and effort as central tenets of a successful program, fine. But a coach needs to be accountable for more than just the way their players act, but how they perform.
If it's class and sportsmanship that are most important to you, by all means, take the 20-block trek north and cheer on Cardinal Stritch.
In D-I, winning has to matter. Sandy Botham's coaching staff has had a lot of turnover - not just in recent years but throughout her tenure. Her roster has a lot of turnover as well...for whatever reason, she has an immense problem holding onto coaches and players. Forget the reasons, whatever they may be, the mass attrition itself is enough to warrant questions regarding her job status. Add in the fact that we have two NCAA tournament appearances over her 16-year tenure, and haven't remotely competed for a conference championship since our last one in 2005-06. What do you have?
Not to mention, she squandered the best D-I player in women's basketball history. She came into this season with three new assistant coaches, albeit one of them serving as Video Coordinator the past couple seasons. She has a roster that is whitewashed save for one extremely talented player.
When it all comes down to it, I'd be fine with the exodus of coaches and players, the lack of diversity, all of it - if she just won.
But winning has been rather difficult to come by in the Klotsche Center. We finished ninth last year, and would have been last place if it weren't for the worst team in D-I, 0-fer YSU.
Is women's basketball a high profile sport? Not on this campus. Is winning important? If it's not, then why the hell is our coach being paid $125,000 to run the program? We're paying that money to be competitive and win Horizon League championships. I don't see us doing that in our current situation.

I don't follow women's basketball too much, but what's the story behind her "squandering the best D-I player in women's history"?
