One thing is for certain: The officials at Niagara -- and maybe every single other game this year -- will not be anywhere near this terrible. i didn't see one second of any game action this weekend so not sure i can agree with u, there is a vast difference in hearing the game and our play by play guy call it and the actual play call.....and we all know the HL is not an official hot bed, unless it is for disappointment.

During the Carroll game, I wanted to punch the guy behind me in the face that kept yelling, "Come on!!!" Now, I find myself yelling the same thing to my computer. For as much as I am bothered by our free throw shooting I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU ON THAT GUY!!!! I'm sorry if dude is on here and is gonna read this but good god man you went WAY overboard in that game, from miss one that was all you did and honestly it was so unnecessary at that point and time

Obviously I didn't see the game, but from the sound of it many problems are being corrected. Defensive intensity was there. The boards were being dominated (against an admittedly small team). Shots were being blocked. Charges were being taken. Foul trouble was still a concern, but it was for Davis too and can really only be chalked up to the officials.
Free throws continue to be very weird. It could just be that after a two-day rest we start making every single one.

Regardless of the free throw, turnover & soft defense problems... it was nice to finally get that first W of the year. Good job, guys. I sure hope that our coaches do everything in their power to fix the problems as quickly as possible. This tournament was a good lesson and definitely showed us what our weak points are going to be, at least for the start of the season.
It's up to the coaches and the players now to fix it. I could be wrong, but I think this will be Niagara's first game on Wed. Let's hope that having 3 under our belt gives us a nice advantage and we can start strong... and finish strong.

I feel better with a win. Let's get a road win at Niagara and come back home for the home opener versus UNI.

A win's a win...
Plenty to improve on. Let's hope Rob has the ability to convey any and all improvements to the guys, and they're able to execute. Florida Atlantic is a team we shouldn't lose to. Portland is a team we shouldn't lose to by 20. Let's go guys. Come back home with 2 wins!

If Milwaukee continues to shoot free throws at a clip with a 50 handle, I don't see how a top five or six finish in conference is possible, much less a top two or three. The book will be out to foul, and foul some of our players often. This is a serious problem that much be addressed and fixed.

Our FT shooting will improve substantially over what it was in this tournament. For the year we'll end up a little lower than last year, I suspect. (Because James and Ricky took a lot of our throws, and were pretty good.)
That aside, we actually played defense today, and guess what? A double digit win even with terrible free throw shooting.

UWM gave up a bunch of rebounds late in the game. At one point we had a 22-12 rebounding advantage, but the final number was 35-34.

I'm sorry Rob but THEY NEED TO WORK ON FREE THROWS. Free throws continue to be very weird. It could just be that after a two-day rest we start making every single one. These are FREE throws. I know, I know. Only three games in but that particulair aspect of all 3 games was just not D-I calibar for the Panthers. D-I college players can hit their shots- and they can especially hit their shots when that shot is completely uncontested and they have the chance to time their shot 100% to their liking. Our FT shooting will improve substantially over what it was in this tournament. Man, I hope it's sooner than later Fran. Food for thought- if we had shot at least 74% from the line in these games we probably would have been (at least) 22-12 and not 20-14... and would have beaten the National Runner Up in front of our home crowd.. Loss @ Valpo 55-54 -- our FT% 7-11 Loss to #18 Butler at home, 73-66 -- our FT% 16-29 Good win tonight though. I hope it carries over to the East Coast. If we can play effective defense and start making our FT's (and never have a shooting disaster like the Portland game), I still see us winning a lot of games this season. GO PANTHERS!!!!

Well, it can't get any worse. What do think is substantially better? And how much can I wager that that is not the case over the course of the season?

The returning players on this year's team who have shot free throws so far -- Ant, Tony, Hags, Lonnie, Ja'Rob and Jerry -- are a combined 18-44, or 40.9%. Last year those guys were 224-353, a combined 63.4%. And with the exception of Hags, who took fewer FTs than any of the rest of them last year, every one of them shot substantially better from the line over the course of the full season last year than they have shot so far this year.
As for the newcomers to this year's team who have shot free throws? That would be Tone, Kaylon, Ryan, Kyle, Mitch and Christian. They are a combined 25-41, or 60.9% But take Mitch and Christian's 0-6 out of that (and those two are not likely to play major minutes this year), and the new guys are shooting 71.4%.
So yes, I am extremely confident that we will shoot free throws over the course of the year substantially better than we did in these three games.
Our current team free throw percentage is 50.6%. I'd be willing to bet that we will end the year shooting better than 63% from the line. I'd say 12% better is VERY substantial. I would not be at all surprised if we end up shooting closer to 70%.
Three games is simply not a big enough sample size to panic about our free throw shooting.
Oh, one more thing since I see a lot of chatter about shooting, for example, 74%. Since the mid-1960s men's college basketball players collectively have never once shot 70% for the season.
