College Hockey is over if the Big Ten forms. The CCHA and WCHA would need to combine if there's any chance for parity. Every Big Ten team on national television constantly; kids will flock even more.

Nevertheless, I will admit: it'd be cool if the Big Ten brought Ice Hockey on officially. Six teams is enough. I'd want to see at least a couple more. Six teams just isn't enough to make for a good conference. There's definitely an audience for it at Northwestern. Chicagoland could support them well. Big Ten(lve) hockey might be cool to see. Just don't rush into it when all you've got is six teams, one of which is just starting out. Until then the Atlantic seems like the best fit for PSU. Natural rivals with RMU, Mercyherst and some of the Western NY teams.

Hockey is pretty popular in PA, and as the article said, Penn State has had a well-supported club hockey team for a few decades now.
Obviously the person doing the donating has wanted to see hockey at the varsity level at PSU and wouldn't be donating it otherwise.
Going to need more than six teams for a Big Ten hockey conference. Those teams won't want to leave their current set ups and rivalries in the WCHA and CCHA.

I hope the program is successful there. That's just an eye-popping amount of money for a program that's NOT basketball or football (which of course is what we would more likely see).

Wisconsin makes money off of hockey, and I'm sure they're not the only one that does. Hockey is most definitely a revenue sport, even though it's not at the level of bball and football.
Now, if a group of donors came up with $88 million for a football team at UWM, would you say no? Like you said, it's their money that they earned and they want football at (presumably) their alma mater.

BP,
People can donate money for whatever cause they want. Keep in mind, though, that I said earlier that IMO basketball or football donations tend to make more sense because those are the sports that offer the most visibility, profitability and athletic "prestige" for a school. $88 million for FCS football at UWM would likely do a lot more than $88 million for hockey at PSU. That's just my opinion, though.

Just to clarify, $88 million for football at UWM would have a profound impact on the campus community, which I'm not as sure is as likely at Penn State. I'm sure hockey will be very popular there, but the school will probably always center around football.

i hadn't heard about Penn State deciding to add hockey or the notion of the Big 10 adding hockey until my dad brought it up on Saturday.
Because i hadn't heard about it, i could only shrug my shoulders when he asked my opinion.
He thought the WCHA was a very good hockey conference. When he asked, rhetorically why Wisconsin would want to leave the WCHA, the only reason i could think of was "fewer flights to Anchorage, Alaska for games." We discussed the topic a bit more, and he offered the opinion that Wisconsin and Minnesota would dominate Big Ten Hockey. i pointed out that Michigan and Michigan State had had some good teams in the past several years, he thought that Wisconsin and Minnesota would still dominate, although he remarked that it would be a nice thing not to have to play, and sometimes lose to, Michigan Tech any more.

That's what's nice about college hockey right now, though. Look at it from M-Tech's POV. Basketball or Football would never allow the two programs to be put on the same level. Hockey does. The Big Ten going into hockey would be cool if they could add a few more teams, but it would hurt the Michigan Tech's of the world.

Frankly, the reason a Michigan Tech or a Minnesota Mankato or a Rochester Institute of Technology can be on the same level playing field is because college hockey is a niche regional sport. (Is there another college hockey team south of the M-D line other than Bama-Huntsville?)
I believe there are no more than about 60 D1 college hockey teams. If there were 100 or 200 or (as in basketball) more than 300? It would sort out just like football and hoops, with big schools in power conferences dominating the sport. So on the one hand, it's great that Northern Michigan or Alaska-Anchorage can be good. But the reason is because, nationally speaking, few people really care.
Of course, that in no way devalues the benefits a great hockey program can give such a school. It still provides the go-to events that pull the campus together.

If (a BIG if) UWM ever were to get FCS football, where could a stadium be placed? I'm guessing the capacity would be between 10 and 20,000?

Fran,
In fact UAH is the only team south of the MD line, and they take great pride in it (and are very good).
Another fact: it isn't around 60, it IS 60. Penn State will be D-I's 61st program, ten more than men's lacrosse.
Milwaukee's club hockey team is in ACHA's D-II...Penn State will be leaving ACHA's D-I when the NCAA D-I team comes alive. The Panthers should look to move up to ACHA D-I eventually.

I'm a fan of putting a stadium in Riverside park. shared use w/mps/urban ecology center and close to campus, works for me. plus it's not like we're "destroying" a scenic park, whatever Olmstead originally designed there 100yrs ago has been long removed.
Milwaukee just isn't a hockey town, it never really has been and I played hockey growing up. if you think we play 2nd fiddle to madison for basketball hockey is another beast all together.
