Some great points, mooner. I'd use Milly or MKE in place of Mil U as a kind of nickname, but I liked Waukee. Love Fighting Hops as a unique mascot! I'd use cream as a replacement for the home whites. We currently use gold frequently, and another example is Georgetown grey.

When we tried to push University of Milwaukee onto the ballot back in my freshman year, Fan came up with the idea of pushing "UMil" kinda like UMass or UConn. People liked it, and the university would need no permission from anybody.
I know exactly what you mean about the Panthers nickname, and in fact some of us on this board have discussed the idea of going back to Gulls (my idea would be as the Gold Gulls). However, we have 50 years of tradition as the Panthers.
I use the name Dirt Cats when I refer to the baseball team.

Thanks for all the feedback! parkerj: I like the idea of "Hops" as a concept (one of the first sports designs I ever did was for a fantasy hoops team called the Brew City Hops), but there's no way that proposal would ever be adopted. Unfortunately, UWM is surrounded by a lot of wealthy older folks who think their economic and political influence absolves them from taking responsibility for moving near a large college campus and all that entails. The university would never subject itself to the PR nightmare of adopting a mascot that could be construed as encouraging intoxicated rowdiness and underage drinking. That said, "Hops" may have an outside chance if the mascot were changed to, say a rabbit or kangaroo and the connections to alcohol were only implied. It would still give us a unique mascot (only two kangaroos and one rabbit in Division 1), but it could have as much appeal to alumni as current students and parents wouldn't have a problem with dressing their kids in a Hops sweatshirt. I may have to take a couple days sometime to play around with this one. @k-Raw: MKE wouldn't work because it's already used as a nickname for the city. We'd need something that would only refer to the university such as Mizzou. It may be short for Missouri, but no one would say "I'm going to Mizzou" if they're taking a trip to St. Louis. I do like your idea of Milly though. I'm surprised that never caught on as a nickname for the city the way Phily did with Philadelphia. black Panther MKE: When were you a freshman? Because I pitched the idea of UMil back in 2006, but I wasn't aware that it had really caught on the way you say. IIRC, the Student Association had Wisconsin State shirts printed out before they even mentioned putting it on the ballot, so us U of Milwaukee supporters couldn't use school funds to make our own shirts and we only had a week to put something together. But I did just find the makeshift identity package I created back then floating around on one of my old photobuckets: Dirt Cats is a cool name, btw. Anyway, since it seems like the idea of adding cream is pretty popular, I'll probably see what I can do with that (and a few other suggestions) in the next few days. Keep the feedback coming!

I never like the perception that we ride the coattails of other schools. Umil is just too much like Uconn, just like Klotsche Krazies is too much like Cameron Crazies. And I know we got that nickname first, it's just that Duke has a ton of national championships.

See, I always thought it was Ben Goodhue that came up with the idea...

It wouldn't surprise me if someone else had that idea too... UMil is a perfectly easy and logical way to shorten the mouthful that is our school's name. Anyway, here's some quick mock-ups of t-shirts with some the various nicknames that have been discussed here. They're relatively plain since if any of them were actually printed up, they'd have to be kept simple enough for anyone with a silkscreen press to do and couldn't use anything that's actually trademarked by the university. i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee416/mooner00/UWM/uwm_tshirt_gold.pngI also did a version that uses cream t-shirts while I was at it. i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee416/mooner00/UWM/uwm_tshirt_cream.pngI've gotten some ideas for logos and uniforms (baseball and hoops) too... hopefully I can have something done and posted within the coming week.

Who cares about Oshkosh or Superior? This is D1. Black & Gold (yellow) is not really a very common color combination. At least were not red & white, or blue & red.
The Panthers name was chosen by the students Changing it again would make us as bad as the Marquette Hilltoppe.. uh, I mean, Warriors..., Golden Eag... Gold.. Golden Eagles? What ever they are this week.
The Fighting Hops idea is really lame.

What about "Brewcats" as an "unofficial" nickname? It embraces the 50+ years as the Panthers name while putting a unique, locally-relevant spin on it.

I was literally going to come on here and post the link until I saw Illwauk already did.
This gives GREAT insight as to how people around the country look at our branding issue.

Yikes. All that thing needs is a couple different Panther logos on it. Maybe a Gull, too.

God that shirt is awful. Now imagine if it just said:
MILWAUKEE BASKETBALL (with just the adidas logo above the words).
That would look awesome.
P.S. Get rid of the curvy letter crap and drop the shadow letters. I'm all about simplicity.
