CLEVELAND, Ohio – Once upon a time, Dennis Gates recruited a 6-foot-5 shooter named Nathanael Jack.
That’s when Jack was playing for Eastern Florida State Junior College. Gates was an assistant coach at Florida State. Jack signed with Florida State, where he spent the last two seasons with limited playing time on a powerhouse team.
In those same two seasons, Gates has led Cleveland State from the depths of the Horizon League to an NCAA bid in 2021. Now armed with his degree in Social Science/Entrepreneurship and a member of the 2020 Atlantic Coast Conference honor roll, Jack has joined Gates in Cleveland.
“He’s a sniper, a 3-point shooter,” said Gates. “He took 84 percent of his shots from 3-point range at Florida State.”
The senior averaged 3.6 points in 7.3 minutes a game for the Seminoles. He shot .370 on 3-pointers. His best game was an 18-point outburst in 12 minutes vs. North Carolina State. He was 7-for-8 from the field.
“He’s a very good catch-and-shoot player who should help us,” said Gates.
At the same time Jack committed to CSU, another graduating senior signed with the Vikings. That’s Broc Finstuen, a 6-foot-4 starting guard from Pacific, where he averaged 11.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot .497 from the field last season.
Gates also had a connection with Finstuen.
“I scouted him when he was at Casper (Wyoming Junior) College,” said Gates. “I like how he handles the ball. Very smart. Hard-nosed.”
CSU has senior point guard Craig Beaudion coming back for an extra season. Finstuen and Jack join D’Moi Hodge at shooting guard/small forward.
“Broc can play multiple positions,” said Gates. “He’s a winner.”
Finstuen played for former NBA guard Damon Stoudamire, who has had records of 23-10 and 9-9 in the last two seasons.
Gates looks for character and a defensive mindset in his recruits, along with being able to score. Finsteun graduates next month with a degree in communications. Both players will attend graduate school at CSU.
“Both of these young men come from excellent programs,” said Gates. “They have been well-coached. They are experienced. They are efficient players who fit our culture and dynamic.”
Gates said he watched “every shot” both players took in the last two seasons. The coaching staff all watched every game and turned in detailed reports.
“We make the decision on these kids as a staff,” he said. “That helps us find the right kind of players.”
They can offset the loss of Alec Oglesby, the promising freshman who has transferred to North Carolina-Wilmington. The NCAA has allowed players to be eligible immediately because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Gates said he has one more scholarship available.

$500k per year. $25k media bonus. $25k "program bonus"= $550 per year. Highest paid coach. Nagy is now 2nd, at $501 per year.

I have zero clue if he will be good or bad. Zero. Looking at all his stops, seems to have a resume that looks alot like Pat Baldwin. I believe his daughter plays volleyball at UW.

I know this is more about Missouri in my last two post. Interesting seeing who Dennis Gates is bringing in.
