Ryan Tillema and the Randolph Boys Club, recently competed in the 2004 Reebok Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas. www.reebokbigtime.com/Tillema ended up avg. 24.25 ppg in the tourney www.reebokbigtime.com/azevedo_docs/PDF/tourn_leaders.pdfAt this point , I just wanted to get everybody's opinion on this kid and the chances UWM has of landing him. As far as I can tell, UWGB and Valpo have offered him scholarships. IMO, he should be UWM's number 1 in-state target for next year. He not going to fly under the radar screen for long and I feel that he would be a great fit for UWM. What does everybody else think?

The word on the street is that Tillema is going to be visiting tomorrow. Hopefully he will like what he sees and choose UWM. IMO he would look very good in Black and Gold!!

Word on the board up north is that Ryan would only be a good fit up there (UWGBPhoenix.com). Apparently, he's only into living on compounds. Seriously, some of the things you read on that board are truly amusing. From my perspective (based on what I saw at an AAU tournament in Sheboygan), Ryan would make a fine combination forward for us and, yes, he should be the No. 1 in-state recruiting priority.

Ryan's current list of schools include, in his order, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Northern Iowa and West Virginia. Apparently, Wisconsin no longer is an option, unless he's willing to walk-on. www.wbby.com

Unfortunately..I would be surprised if Tillema wound up at UWM. I will keep race out of it but lets just call it "social concerns".
I have said all along that UWGB NEEDS to keep the smaller town, non-urban white kids in Green Bay. So far, he has done that. Tillema would add to that. The word is that Tillema is a bit intimated by the city of Milwaukee and the "makeup" of the current roster.
It will be interesting to see. He would feel more comfortable socially at UWGB.

Beans, a quick question (and I think a fair one given the nature of your most recent post): Is our location in this great city being used as a negative recruiting tool by other, more rural universities?

Per wishoops.net, a very fine site presided over by Pearl Kiley, Ryan Tillema has narrowed his list of choices to three state schools (presumably not including Marquette). All I'll say, outside of what's already been conjectured here about Ryan's cultural preferences, is 'Why not us?' One choice would have him as, what, the fifth option at combination forward behind Marcus Landry, Ray Nixon (provided he doesn't transfer), Alando Tucker and Joe Krabbenhoft. The other would leave him in Green Bay. Enough said.

This just in from the Wisconsin State Journal:
UW in picture for Tillema
Randolph senior forward Ryan Tillema has narrowed his college basketball choices to scholarship offers from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay and the opportunity to walk on at the University of Wisconsin, Randolph boys basketball coach Bob Haffele said.
The 6-foot-7 Tillema, a first-team selection on the ***ociated Press All-State team after averaging more than 19 points per game as a junior, was scheduled to visit UW-Milwaukee this weekend and UW-Green Bay next weekend, Haffele said. UW-Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk visited Randolph Thursday, Haffele said.
"When Wisconsin got into the picture, it made (the decision) tough for him," Haffele said about Tillema. "Wherever he goes, he will have a good opportunity and whoever gets him will be well off. He's very versatile. I see him as a '3' in college, a wing player. He can go outside. He can shoot it."
Haffele said it was his understanding that Tillema eventually would receive a scholarship at UW - that he could be a walk-on for two years, including a redshirt season, and then potentially have three years on scholarship.
"He's a very skilled player, a great person and a very good student," Haffele said. "He's the kind of kid you'd like to have."

What does a player do in this situation? I am sure UWM will offer a 4 year full ride. The Badhers give a kid 5 years and 3 on scholarship. As much as I hate to say it, Bo 'satan' Ryan will most likely win a championship in that timeframe. These decisions must be tough on young guys. Do you sit out 2 years paying for school and win, or take your chances on winning with all paid for?

We'll win, too, Fenske. Just not on as consistently big a stage as the Badgers. I would take the free education, but then I'm not 17 years old anymore, either. His best chance for playing time by far is here, of course.

Pearl Kiley from wishoops seems to feel that Ryan will end up either in Madison or Green Bay. Obviously, Greg Stiemsma, his high school teammate, is in Madison and that would be a natural draw. As for Green Bay, they get daily coverage from two local newspapers. We can barely get coverage from one. The bottom line: We have 11 scholarships to give over the next two years and haven't gotten a single commitment yet. Just a fact.

It does not help with recruiting when a great recruit like Passley leaves. I dont know what is taking so long with signing a legit recruit. UWGB is closing the gaps fast on us, which overall is great for state basketball, but not for our program. Later, UWMfreak

We're like-minded on this one, fellas. I can say with certainly that in addition to his "cultural" concerns, the boy wants to see his name in the newspaper. Good luck, buddy, when you're riding the pines in Madison.
