The Bus

It's in the planning stages right now.
Inspired by The Ag Spirit (www.ag-spirit.com) and our own love of the black and gold, several of us have discussed the possibility of building our own tailgating/traveling bus for UWM sports.
It sounds crazy, but they did this for relatively cheap, and every person I've had correspondence with has convinced me that this can be done. We're not going to do it until school is over in May, but the bus would be completed by the beginning of the fall 2009 semester if we got the bus in early summer. We also have a place to store the bus when we're not using it.
The reasons we want it:
1. Athletic Department no longer does bus trips for road games.
2. A growing affinity among the student population for soccer (average soccer attendance among students this fall: 50+)
3. Unites UWM fans throughout the year.
4. Viable transportation to away soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball games.
5. Tailgating home for baseball home games; boost student attendance to baseball.
We have other reasons for wanting this bus, but those are the main reasons.
Thoughts and suggestions?

Yeah, the Ag Spirit is a 60-footer, and we'd want a 40-footer.
These are all the things we want to put into it:
1. Seating for 16 or so
2. Four bunks per side (14 feet of the length)
3. Separation of driver and 2 passengers from the rest of the bus (maybe curtain, maybe plywood wall or something)
4. Television and video game compatible (watch DVD's in the XBox 360 or such.
The cost isn't as much as you'd think. Of the four separate owners who converted school buses to similar vehicles (The Spirit not one of them), the most amount of money spent was $2,000. And that bus had 2 working sinks, a stove, a shower, and a toilet.

We're not going to spend a bunch of money to get a VW bus, because it basically seats the same as a minivan, maybe 1 or 2 more.
The idea is to make road trips and home baseball games accessible to UWM students and alumni.

I feel like you'd have much more success finding a bus service that you will promise continual service. Then get student senate to commit segregated fees to the trips to offset some costs of the trips.
Buying a bus and paying for the gas seems like it would be way more than paying the rent for some of them. I don't think there is interest to go to every game. Plus ownership of a bus, upkeep, and storage would be issues that would need money as well.

You also have to consider the cost of a driver (you need someone with a commercial license with an interstate tag on it) and the cost of insurance.

And don't forget about cleaning costs, I hear students sometimes puke on those bus roadtrips...
