The biggest problem with UW-M, being an alumni, is that it is a commuter school. Something like 10% of students live on campus. This is not conducive to supporting athletics, especially when 25,000 students leave the campus after class each day.
If we had more on campus dorms . . if we had on site hoops . . . if we had on site football . . . now you have a chance. None of this will ever happen unless somehow a block nearby (Columbia Hosp) is cleared out for an athletic village and you get more dorms and on site facilities. Until then - it will always be what it has been for 40 years - a commuter school with limited support.
What is really a shame, however, is that Milwaukee and the north shore are great areas, and we could have a heck of a student life if this happened. We could easily build the same atmosphere that exists in Madison - but it would take time.

I'm planning on opening up the first tri-level bar on milwaukee's eastside and calling it the panther prowl. But this idea is still years away from development. The eastside does need a signature bar that is strictly a panther bar. If you think about bars on the eastside like axels for instance, they are a budweiser bar that has plenty of cub, badger, and marquette flyers up, it doesn't exactly scream milwaukee panthers. Oh and the gasthous does not count.
I once went to the Library bar in Minnesota with some friends and in there bumped into my buddies history professor, the minnesota tennis coach, and the brother of a prolific NFL player from minnesota, both brothers are now in the NFL. All of this happened on the same night and most of the people were there cheering on the crappy gopher bball team(I know they are getting better now). We don't have anything close to this on the eastside.
It takes money to make money and we don't currently have funds for an athletic village or a panther bar or anything of that nature that would attract newcomers to the panthers. If we know what it is going to take, then it just comes down to generating money.
We need a fundraiser that can be done on a large scale. The company I work for offers this kind of fundraiser for non-profits, but it would have to be done on a really large scale in order to make a difference at uwm.

The athletic village is the athletic department's deal.
A Panther-themed sports bar would have to be done by one of us, or preferably, someone who knows how to run a bar and can convince someone to invest in such an establishment.
I once talked to my uncle, who owns two bars, about it, and he said that it would be a better investment if the men's basketball team played on or near campus. As it stands, they don't, and that's 25+ solid dates out the window with games, the preseason scrimmage, and radio shows, which a Panther bar would most definitely be hosting.
That's not the biggest thing stopping it. The biggest thing that would stop a sports bar down there is that the neighborhood has many, many students. Catering to them is fine, but students don't spend a lot of money and students don't tip well.
Of course, if any of you have the expertise and want to open a UWM sports bar, I'm all for it, and I'll come work for you.

I was a Campus Ambassador for 3 years and I did all I could to promote UWM athletics beyond that of the normal CA duties. I STRONGLY recommend (and can serve as a recommendation) any Krazie to apply! You not only get to be the first student that incoming freshman meet, you also have their contact information to follow up with them throughout the school year, why not invite them to all the games!
I also agree with the past comment that was made, if you read through the many old threads on here there are many ideas about how to get momentum going once again. Many young alums like myself still have a profound interest in going to games, we just do not seem to be marketed to much. I do like the Panther Pit or whatever it is that has a bar in it : ) Sign me up!

Any games I'm not as sold on us being a commuter school as a lot of people say. Someone either on this thread or on a previous one said that somewhere around 20-25% of students live on campus, which may be true, but I don't think anywhere near 75-80% of students live more than a half hour away. I never lived in the dorms when I came to school 5 years ago, but I've always been aware of the team (the whole reason I came to school here) and have never had a problem making it to games. I bet at least 90% of students at uwm live within a half hour of campus, which would be easy to make it to games, we only need to come up with some way to market to these students and recent alumni.

14,000 live in the immediate area (West to Riverwest, south to Brady, north to Capitol).

I believe we have around 8000 students who live on or near campus. Thats almost Marquette's entire student body.

If you guys build a bar, i will gladly offer my bartending/managing services for it. As a former krazie and avid fan unfortunately work has been busy and i havent had time to get to the games but have them on tv at the bar, and with an upcoming engagement on the horizon, things are even tighter than usual, but i would always lend my services to help fellow panther fans! sounds like a great idea, the east side needs a strictly Panther hot spot, if that idea takes off, then you could go into the realm of sponsoring bus trips to the cell for fans, or T-shirts to hand out at games, or run specials, anyone showing that nights game ticket gets a free pitcher of beer or free bomb like rascals used to do. There are a lot of ways to go with the whole bar idea, the only unfortunate part is the fact that the vast majority of panther fans who live on the east side are under 21... so it would only appeal to the upperclassmen/women. but it would still be a place for students/alumni/players/coaches ie rob jeter show... to gather and share their passion for panther athletics in general

It's in the works, brettpanther. We just have to come up with the money.
I think it might be a good idea to have a wristband type thing or mark on the hand so we can let the underclassmen in the sports bar without serving them.
I call it sports bar, but I'm thinking more than just a place with peanuts and chips; I'd want a restaurant with comfortable seating and great food.
Take BW3's...I use this as an example for those students who are underage, since they know what it looks like.
NEEDS
1. Make it All-UWM memorabilia, colors etc. 2. Comfortable seating for anyone (BW3's is stupid in this respect; their seating is hard and uncomfortable) 3. Enough TV's to light up the place. 4. Great food. Simply said, but very, very important. It's getting its own section on this post. 5. Not only do you have to not support Marquette and Wisconsin, you have to put them down - a picture with Bucky "Vadger" would fit nice in a place like this.
FOOD
1. Great cheese curds that don't look or taste bought; they have to be a signature item 2. Buffalo wings, but more importantly you have to have boneless wings, and they have to be as good, if not better, than those at BW3. 3. All of the sausages available at Miller Park have to be available at the bar. Doesn't have to be Klement's (in a perfect world it'd be Usinger's) but it has to be good. 4. You don't need a beer from every country. If people want rare beers, they'll go to Cafe Hollander. This place needs to have every good MillerCoors beer, but sadly it also needs to have Budweiser; it sells. 5. The specials, as Brett pointed out, should be cursory to going to the game. Drink specials, yes, but there also has to be food specials for people with game tickets so underage students aren't left out.
EXTRAS
1. At Fuddruckers, each legendary band has a booth. I'm for the idea that if the place is big enough, there should be a Butler booth, a Green Bay booth, etc. etc. Why? Not because we like them...in fact we hate them. But because it would be nice to have memorabilia and things for UWM alumni and students to gain appreciation and respect for other Horizon League schools -- that way people will feel great when we beat Cleveland State.
2. I got this idea from Overtime in Myrtle Beach. Put up a flag from every single Horizon League school, and when each school's season is over, take the flag down. Leave the last school standing up for a week, then replace them a week after the season. Could be done for conference championship contention too.
3. The flags could also be positioned on top of each other and moved for conference standings.

Definitly Brett. My idea is for a tri level bar, similar to the library bar in the twin cities if you have ever been. Basically we could have the entrance A restaurant bar, similar to BW3, and ideally I would like a couple of different atmospheres at the same location. A sports bar feel and maybe a basement or upstairs for late night partying, post big victory Although I don't believe the bar needs budweiser. Special agreement with Miller Coors might make up for the business lost.
