can our Panthers compete tonight? Drake plays in a better conference, but they're 5-11 in MVC play. Our team will have to recommit to the basics to do well in this game IMO and to me that means limiting turnovers, boxing out and getting the ball inside consistently. If the Panthers can get back to the level they were playing at in the games against Detroit and UWGB, hopefully they can give the Bulldogs a run for their money.

Halftime score:
UWM - 46 Drake - 36
Panthers shoot 46% for the half Panthers down 28-19 and go on a 20 to 0 run

Halftime score is a shock, Drake has been playing real well lately with some big wins. Hope we hang on.

Spurts, I suppose. 20-0 is nice, but the Panthers are going to have to get up early in the next couple games if they want to make any kind of run in the conference tournament.

I haven't been able to listen to the entire game.
Massiah and Paulson have both fouled out already?? WTF!!

Both fouled out before the 8:30 mark. Wasn't there to see it in person, so I can't commit the calls were home cooking or not, but it didn't sound too pretty.
Wow, did I hear that right.....I think Bill said Drake shot 43 free throws??? I may have to edit this after I get a chance to look at the official stats.

Fouling too much, and not getting to the line.
The swing offense makes these better:
Lowers turnovers More offensive rebounds more free throws
The first two, UWM has done this season. However, they aren't getting to the line nearly as much as they could be.

We lost by 8. The box score says they scored 32 points on FT's, we scored 11. Not having seen the game I can't say for sure what went on but on the face of it, it sounds like we got hosed.
We haven't given up that many fouls in recent memory. The Panther site alludes (subtley) to disparity. Did we wind up with the refs from the UW-GB game?
Crap like this makes you wonder why you're a college basketball fan instead of a WWF fanatic.

Free throws:
Milwaukee 11-18 Drake 32-43
That is ridiculous.

For what it's worth, the officials were from the Horizon League. Drake's entire offense consists of dribble penetration.....the UWM defenders just couldn't stop Drake guards from penetrating and picked up a ton of fouls. On the other end of the court, Drake plays a very soft zone, so they don't foul a lot (they also give up boatloads of open 3's). It's not unusual for Drake to shoot a lot more free throws than their opponents, although last night was a bigger disparity than usual.
From my, admittedly biased, point of view, you guys didn't get hosed by the officials.

For what it's worth, the officials were from the Horizon League. Well that explains it right there. Anyway, good luck the rest of the year, dubulldog, and we look forward to having you up here next year. We will have a very different team next year. We are all expecting our record to make a complete 180 degree turn. What about you guys? What are your expectations for next year.

LOL....glad to hear that MVC fans aren't the only ones complaining about the officiating in their league. I gotta say it....I'm glad I don't see those refs every day....they called a lot more fouls than I'm used to seeing (UWM had 29, Drake had 20....that's a lotta whistles). I was actually kinda impressed with your team.....they're young and the pressure bothered them, but with another year's seasoning, I can see them being very tough. Good athletes, decent shooters, based on the one game I saw. I like Jeter as a coach, too. As for Drake.....it will be a totally different Drake team next season as well.....we lose 4 senior starters. There's only 3-4 returnees that I feel can compete at this (MVC) level. We've got a decent recruiting class coming in, but I try not to put too many expectations on new guys. If my work schedule allows, I'll probably make it to the game in Milwaukee next season. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way!

Thanks for the insight bubulldog. Actually you guys in the MVC get some of the same refs we have in the HL. It has been a few years since you guys have been over the .500 mark so congrats on that. Hopefully you can get a big group to come up to the Cell next year. Good luck the rest of the way.

A lot of us Panther fans expected, I should say hoped, our team would fair respectably in the Horizon this year because we felt our incoming talent was good enough to outweigh the inexperience. We were sorely disappointed...but congratulations on the win, good luck the rest of this year as well as next year.
