TUESDAY, Jan. 9, 2007, 6:05 p.m. By Bobbi Roquemore Swiggett out of practice with knee injury
UW-Milwaukee freshman point guard Charlie Swiggett sat out of practice Tuesday due a knee injury suffered at practice Monday.
An athletics spokesman said Swiggett underwent tests Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury to his left knee.
His status for UWM's next game, 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland State (6-11, 0-4 Horizon League), is unknown.
Swiggett, quickly developing into the Panthers' best backcourt defender, has started 12 consecutive games. He averages about five points, two rebounds and two assists per game for the Panthers (4-13, 1-2 Horizon).

Channel 4 is reporting that he is possibly out for the year with a torn ACL.
Great.

This is anything but good news for the team and Charlie.
The only potential good thing that can come from this is that hopefully his minutes go between Gentry and Thronton.

Ouch! That is not good news! Hopefully it's not as bad as reported.
If he is ruled out for the season, does anyone know if it is too late to get a medical redshirt..?

Yes, it is too late for a med redshirt. I think the rule is something like 25% or less of regular season games played which usually works out to be about 7 or 8 games.
So, the last true freshman prior to Swiggett to start blew out his kneee (AT) as well. Hopefully this is not a trend otherwise Jeter better not start Flowers next year.

That sucks that he won't get a medical redshirt. Hopefully with it being early enough in the year that he won't miss any time next season.

Depending on the extent of the injury, (only ACL, ACL + meniscus, ACL + MCL, etc.) surgery used, (hamstring to replace, patellar tendon to replace, "cadaver" ACL to replace) the success of the surgery, when the surgery is, and the rehab he could be back shooting and jumping between 4 and 6 months at the earliest. Maybe even earlier if they use a "cadaver" ACL to replace his.
I was back playing volleyball 4 months after my surgery. It took me a good three months later before I could jump without thinking about it anymore.
So, if he does indeed have a torn ACL, has a successful surgery within the next month or so, he should be back in time for the start of next season.

My hope is that everyone on here stays with this team in spite of the very grim two months that are now sure to follow. Having no true point guard will make the rest of the season very tough on everyone connected with the program. Please just keep next year's recruiting class in mind as you watch this unfold.

Official news... Swiggett Sidelined By Torn ACL True freshman started last 12 games this season before going down this week
MILWAUKEE - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball freshman Charlie Swiggett has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Swiggett suffered the injury during practice Monday, with tests Tuesday afternoon confirming the tear. He will likely have surgery on the knee, though no timetable has been set.
Swiggett had started 12 of the first 17 games of this season, averaging 5.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. A guard from Chester, Pa., and Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., Swiggett was the first true freshman to start a game for the Panthers since the 2001-02 season.
UWM returns to action Thursday night, starting a two-game swing through the state of Ohio with a contest at Cleveland State.

While it will hurt not having a "true" point guard (Franklin and Hanson are pretty close), I'm not sure how much more "grim" the season can get. I mean, this is a 4-13 team we're talking about here.

Best of luck with the rehab Charlie! Personally, I would like to see him redshirt next year since there is no need for him to rush back with the the plethora of guards on the team next year. I just want Charlie to be 100% confident in his knee when he steps back onto the court, whether that be in 9 or 18 months.

From what I hear when he does recover they EXPECT (don't know for sure) that he would loose any athletic ability because it is only one ligament. I do hope he takes his time though

Well, the team showed some real potential to pull off a win or two over the last four games. Now, I'm reasonably confident that the potential has been removed. However, you would like to think that the injury to Charlie creates some playing time for Ryan and Roman.

Although Charlie is a big loss, Ricky's game seems to be coming together. Avo will probably get the start and I can see Kaylan and Roman getting some more time. This may not yet be a total loss of a season. I can see two wins this week in Ohio.

Avo will probably get the start... Not according to Bobbi Roquemore's article in today's JS... "So even with the opening provided by Swiggett's season-ending injury, it looks as if, for now, Smith will continue to enter games as a reserve." www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=551664I'm guessing Ricky gets the start...?
