Panther fans, I said from day 1 that we are shooting for .500, and there will be some rough games. What do you expect from a bunch of freshman? Like I said, we have no leadership or talent from last season's team. Our talent is hidden right now. Freshman take a long time to develop. The vast majority of first year players are not Domic James.
Remember your first semester in school? They have to deal with a tough transition in education and the court. Ricky, Roman, Ryan, and Charlie will have some amazing games, and some that will make you sick. That happens with freshman.
Look at Matthews and Landry last season (remember, the guys Rick beat for city POY?). Both will be amazing players at their respective schools, but last season did not go well for either player. Badger and Gold fans have not given up on them, they realized that freshman do dumb things.
Ricky and Roman didnt play well last night. So? In 1-2 years, maybe even the end of the season, they will be outstanding.
I said it all along... we are playing for 07-08. Have fun watching our freshman grow and become the next UWM HL champs.
In Jeter I Trust, UWMfreak
ps. Forget an attendance record this year. Next year... maybe. ps. Joe Allen is HUGE. ps. Torre didn't seem to care about the game, why should you?

freak, just a correction, Wesley Matthews is from Madison and was the Mr. Basketball Wisconsin award winner. A little better than City player of the year.

Thanks. Good eye, my bad. Hopefully my point still remains. What do we honestly expect from a bunch of freshman? They have no leadership to follow on the floor. Let them mature into the leaders this year.
Thanks, UWMfreak

Ricky won POY in the city over Marcus Landry. That could be what you meant, right Freak?

why should we care? WHY SHOULD WE CARE? how about being publically embarassed in the sentinel today, how about being considered an established D1 program and fighting for a win against an average D2 Team. if you are a fan of this team then u have to care and you have to be a little scared.

I agree. But I also think that this bunch can improve. How quickly they improve will determine how successful the season is.
I will also say that I find comments like "I hope we are all more realistic now" to be disturbing. It's kind of symptomatic of UWM's problem and the reason for real concern over this game. Despite our recent success, there are still a considerable number of people on the fence with regard to whether or not they make an even an emotional (let alone financial) investment in the team.
Games like this allow the naysayers to shout out "Flash in the pan," and "I told you so." Especially when they're against an opponent that clearly we should be far superior to.
I'm not saying people here are naysayers, but some of us seem to relish saying they were right to have lower expectations than others have. For my part, I'd rather hope for the best and be wrong then expect the worst and be right.

I am pretty sure I said this to UIC fans after they lost to Parkside last year or the year before and thought the sky was falling: Parkside is a quality non-D-1 team-- most UW teams are coached and drilled in the fundamentals, and it's not a surprise that they'd come in on fire at the start. This game was their season highlight. Your team will improve over the course of the year.
Having said that, you guys on this board have to recognize that you just graduated SEVEN SENIORS at the same time. You have some good recruits, a few bench players, and some jucos to come in as a stop gap measure. But you're going to be in the middle or lower part of the league this season. It happens. I fully expect Loyola to be in the middle of the pack or lower next year when Schilb, Kou, Pattrick, and Woods are gone.
I think you should try and focus on making UWM basketball an event in itself rather than focusing on the winning. I've found that to be a comfort over the two decades of Loyola mediocrity, and it makes the good years all the more sweet.

Relax fellas...No we should not have lost to Parkside, but they are a solid D2 program who always competes well and fights hard...We had freshman (RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL) playing against guys who have played college basketball for several years....It does not matter what level it is at, they have played against college level talent and have put more muscle on their body and they play better as a team...UWM will have their rough spots this year but remember without the rough spots the sweet spots are not quite so sweet

Regardless of whether or not Parkside's a quality D-2 team, they're still a D-2 team that beat us on our floor. I think this game did a few things: it showed that these guys have to get it together on the floor and play as a team--individual talent will not win in the college and D-1 ranks, it showed that although this team is talented, it has a long way to go to be a competitive D-1 team, and finally it showed that we are nowhere near being a team that can compete for the Horizon title. Flame away if you want, quote scores from major D-1 teams if you want, but until this team has a leader--a stopper if you will, plays defense, (I didn't watch or listen to the game but have read the posts from others about the game) and plays smart offense, there will be a lot of games like this. It appears that this team is going to have to do everything right to compete at this point, and the early schedule is going to make everything seem brutal. That being said, I think we're a team that can finish in the middle of the pack in the Horizon, if things come together. Now, it's up to the coaches, staff, and players to make that happen. If we can build up some momentum for next season, I like our chances to re-appear at or near the top of the Horizon. Let's hope we can do so, and hope the Panthers come together quicker than I'm expecting. But don't give up hope, there's a lot of time in the season, and we've got some nice players. Coach Jeter is not going to let us not be competitive, but it will likely take some time. Beat Edgewood! T
