I think the reason people (myself included) would expect several down years is that there is at least 3 scholarships to fill, would have been likely more if Jeter left. That mean many of the recuits we got this year would be last minute guys and would be here 2 to 4 years before a coach could fill them with guys he has recruited over a period of time.

I've thought about this some and I am reversing my original position to side with Lou. A new coach means new connections. Their staff normaly is involved with various other prospects as well. You can look at Beeline coming in with his prospects he was originally recruiting and bringing them to West Virginia or even Jeter pulling in Young (although he hasn't turned out as well as he was projected), Avo, Messiah, Franklin, and Kaylan. I don't think recruiting for a new coach is as tough as we imagine. The only difference for this situation is that we have 7 (8) spots to fill. This is an obstacle for any coach.
On this note, with all of the talk about Jeter being one of the greatest recruiters in the land, is anyone questioning if he is really living up to this? I realize the class above isn't bad by any means but these guys don't appear to be superstars. And I feel a little empty looking at our haul this year especially. Maybe I'm asking too much, but this was supposed to be Jeter's forte.

By the time RJ was hired it was too late for the early signing period. The people he was working on for UW wanted to play in the Big 10 not at a mid-major in the HL, so he had to start with a new slate. That's why I believe we'd have been hurting if he left. The next guy would have been faced with the same situation.
A D-2 Coach would have contacts with D-2 level players, a high major assistant would have players who want to play in a power conference. A mid major coach might have someone but they may not be what we needed and they may not come along.
You don't just walk into a gym and say "Hey want to play for me?" It takes a bunch of calculations. What do you need? Who might fill that need? How many visits have been used up? What connections do we have to get to that kid? Who else is recruiting who and can we convince the guy to come here instead of there? Do we take a chance on wasting a campus visit on someone who is being hotly recruited by others?
Jeter did okay in the fall but the Spring session which was badly needed because recruits who signed up Pearl left us, was wasted. Let's see what he brings in this Spring and next fall before we start worrying about our haul.
