I also vote for the former.........I don't want to use the word "waste", but if you go after someone now (and they haven't already signed with someone there is probably a reason), you are more or less "stuck" with that guy for four years. I know that scholarships are renewable each year, but BP has said that he views it as a 4 year commitment by himself and the university (you basically need to get yourself kicked off before he will ask you to leave). I think you just lick your wounds, have the other guys step up, and go after someone else hard for next year. Or maybe he has a transfer in waiting sitting in his back pocket haha.

Hope you guys had a chance to see the short story in today's Journal Sentinel about Passley's release. From what I read, Anthony was on ALL the Indiana all-state basketball teams -- not just some. Anyway, what a blessing to have such a straight-shooting coach, one who doesn't try to put a flowery spin on everything that happens in his program. This is very much unlike some other local college coaches (if you know what I mean).

I missed the blurb about Passley in the J/S. Was it available in the online version? I couldn't find it. Can you link it?

Here's a huge surprise, panther. One important statement was omitted from the article. Bruce said: "My guess is that he will be going to a junior college for a year and I would expect to see him at a high-major school the next year." Again, it seemed that Manoyan attempted to underplay the talent level of the players BP and TJ are bringing into the program. In addition, Boo Davis was erroneously called a redshirt freshman. We know he's a redshirt junior. To be fair, this kind of thing is typical when the sports editor treats us like an afterthought. Four stories since the end of the year.

Dylan...do you think Manoyan underplaying the talent of the newcomers is a common thing? I certainly dont. I dont think the sports editor has anything against UWM. How many stories do you think we should have? I mean, what would you want stories about? I think the coverage has been fine. Also, on Passley. No foul play here by Butler, IUPUI, etc. Passley wasnt happy and wanted to go home. Its as simple as that.

Beano, you may be absolutely right about Passley. At least, I certainly hope you are. Though with Cincy's aggressive recruitment of JUCO point guard Jihad Muhammed after his commitment to Scott Drew at Baylor, you never really know for sure. Like others, I eagerly wait to see where Anthony shows up. In regards to the J/S treatment of UWM vs., let's say, Marquette. There have been five (to be precise) stories written about UWM since the end of the season vs. 23 on MU ranging from Tan Tom's involvement with USA junior basketball to the hiring of an assistant to the ridiculous flap about the school's name change (Personally, I prefer Golden Avalanche or Hilltoppers). It's long overdue that UWM fans stir the pot!

I think that largely has to do with the person who is covering the team ... not necessarily the paper as a whole.
Rosiak is a reporting stud and MU should be lucky to have him on its beat.
UWM has the man who never met a buffet he didn't like ... plus he also wears a lot of hats at the JS.
And until UWM routinely puts 8,000 or 9,000 butts in the seats it's going to stay that way. Once again let me repeat, interest drives coverage.
It's not the newspaper's responsibility to generate that interest either ... it's the university's.

I think I have seen this somewhere before...............ohh yeah, I think that is verbatim what the sports editor told me in an email last year. haha But on a serious note, the statement is valid.......now, we (as UWM fans) need to enlighten the sports department and show them that there is interest, and the interest level has rizen of late. As such, the coverage needs to keep pace.

Still, it's one thing to say you have an interest in the program, it's another to actually have an interest AND goto the games. When we can only draw 3,000 for some league games, it shows there is still a long way to go in order to get to the next level of interest. The interest level isn't there to warrant 23 stories in the offseason. I feel the coverage has kept pace ... UWM barely got a trace of coverage back in the Elevator Man Era.

I will admit that the coverage has improved - last year in fact, it was pretty good for the most part IMHO. You are right in that it is leaps and bounds better than it was.....say 7 - 10 years ago. It is understood that people in the Milwaukee area are not clamoring to get the Sunday paper to see how the Panthers did, but the tried and true Panther fans (whether that is 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, or 10,000), need to continue to push the media envelope so that stides are made. Complacency leads to mediocrity - we don't want the team to "relax" and coast, and without the voice of the fans, the coverage could do just that - and before you know it, it could dwindle down to nothingness (again). We need to stay visible, and the coverage will follow.

panther and hack, you guys both make great points! Being familiar with the way sports journalism works, it is always the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. Dale Hoffman has done a tremendous job enlightening many that there is in fact a wheel at UWM. Now the onus is on all of us to make sure that the coverage intensifies (we don't want a repeat of the N.C. State game, where our efforts were covered by a hack from the Raleigh rag and the story placed on page 7-9). As for Manoyan, I know that he thinks we should be treated as more of a beat. As for Rosiak, I hear through the grapevine that he catches unbelievable flak for his anti-Marquette bias (if you can believe that).

In fact, panther, I have it on excellent authority that as soon as any positive coverage is afforded UWM, a certain AD from across town hastily orchestrates a calling campaign to "balance" coverage at the J/S. I guess ultimately this all boils down to a chicken-and-egg argument. Yes, we'll never get the attention as long as we draw 3,500 to our league games. But do we get the turnout from local basketball fans if we're consistently placed on the inside pages? And, yes, this is the perfect time for Panther fans to discuss these issues, not after the season has begun.
