Halftime score 20-19. Not UWM ball. Poor shooting, not rebounding. Listening to the game you can hear Coach Pearl screaming at Ed. We need to step it up.
Go Panthers

No doubt, it seems that UWM is in a funk. We need to get our shooters some open looks. Painful first-half to listen too......................but not as painful as the half-time guest (Bud) is to listen too . I had to turn my radio off, can I turn it back on yet.

12:42 to go in the game and McCants just picked up his 4th foul. Time to see what the bench is made of.

Great win, even if it was ugly. WSU seems a little dirty and a little pouty in the win. What was up with the stoppage of play with about a minute left?

Box score: UWM 68, Wright St. 53uwmpanthers.ocsn.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/012704aaa.htmlPage doesn't fold defensivelyHe stymies Wright State's Doliboa[/color] By KEN PAXSON Special to the Journal Sentinel Posted: Jan. 27, 2004 Dayton, Ohio - On a night when their offense was downright offensive, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers knew just where to turn. They shrugged off their shooting woes Tuesday and put the defensive clamps on Wright State, earning a 68-53 victory over their Horizon League men's basketball rival. The victory was the eighth straight for UWM, which improved to 14-5 overall and 9-0 in the Horizon. More important, the Panthers added a game to their league lead on the second-place Raiders, who fell to 10-9 and 7-2. UWM, the ninth-best shooting team in the nation, shot just 28.6 percent in the first half but knocked down 61.9 percent of its shots in the second half in claiming its eighth-straight win. The Panthers (14-5, 9-0 Horizon) now have a two-game lead over the Raiders (10-9, 7-2) and a two-and-a-half game lead over UW-Green Bay (12-6, 6-2) in league play. "If you had told me before the game we were going to hold them to 68 points, I'd have said our chances were good," WSU coach Paul Biancardi said. "I would think we could score 69." Unfortunately for the Raiders, they didn't come close to that many points, falling to UW-Milwaukee 68-53 in a Horizon League showdown in front of an announced crowd of 7,159 at the Nutter Center. Wright State led 13-5 early, but the Raiders were held to just six points, all from the line, the final 10 minutes of the half as the Panthers scored 13 straight points and eventually led 20-19 at the break. UW-Milwaukee (14-5, 9-0 Horizon) then opened the second half with that 20-7 run and was up 47-32 before the Raiders scored nine straight, six coming from Vernard Hollins, to trail just 47-41 with 6:23 to play. The Panthers, though, followed with a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach. Nice game last night, UWM. Even though the first half was U-G-L-Y for both teams, you guys really played much better in the second half, and I can see why you are undefeated in league play this year. I was very impressed with your overall defense, and the press was very effective.
Unfortunately, WSU picked a bad night for our freshmen to start playing like freshmen again. We really looked out of sync all night, and our turnovers really killed us. Does anyone know what happened on the double technical that was called in the second half? I know that WSU's Wood and the UWM player were yapping a little bit, but they weren't right in each others' faces about it, and I didn't see anything physical. I assume it must have been something that was said.
While I'm really disappointed with the results of the game, I think it is probably going to be good in the long run. We were flying pretty high with our win streak, higher than we really should have been, and hopefully this will give us a bit of reality check.
What do you guy see as your remaining challenges in the league this season? Have you traveled to Butler and Detroit yet? Even though Butler isn't very good this year, they still have a pretty good home court advantage.

Did anyone make the road trip last night? What was the atmosphere like? It was tough to get a feel on the radio.
p.s. I am glad Bill Johnson is doing play by play, because he is a tremendous cheerleader for the program, and is always hyping them on "The Game", but last nights play by play was exceptionally poor, IMO. Oh well, I guess he gets to have an off night, too.

Only heard the second half of the game last night, but what a great lift heading into the GB game. Would have been happy to come out of that road trip 2-1, but thrilled to have wins in Calihan and Nutter against two very solid teams.
Bring on the kleenex.....I mean Phoenix...

The atmosphere was pretty good from a WSU standpoint. Despite the prediction of snow, it didn't hit many areas around town, so the attendance didn't suffer. We had a solid 7000 people there, and it was a pretty energetic crowd. Of course, it would have helped if the first half wasn't so bad (for both teams). But when we started the comeback in the second half, it was rockin'! We don't see that size of crowd or that level of excitement very often, so it was good to hear! I didn't really see/hear more than a handful of Panther fans.
In regards to someone's post about the ridiculous delay in the last minute of the game, there was a play from about 2 minutes earlier in which the shot clock was accidentally reset even though the ball didn't hit the rim. Ultimately, the correct call was made that it should have been a shot clock violation, but why they spent so much time on it is beyond me.

What's the deal with free hamburgers and holding us under 70 pts? Was it a promotion to draw fans?

Great win last night. We should think about having a hamburger incentive or something like that. Maybe even involve beer. Like if we score over 100 points we get a free beer. that'll never happen but i can hope. I was also wondering what the attendance was last night because at times it seemed pretty loud. In all honesty though it mustve have been a pretty crappy game to watch. At least it didnt sound exciting on the radio but a win is a win.....bring on GB

I agree PantherPhil, Bill Johnson had an off game. But the worst part was when he said that some player was chasing another one like Terrell Buckley after he got burnt. What's with that??? Come on Bill, T-Buck's the man.
Also, I'm gonna look ahead and say that if we can beat UIC in Chicago, we'll be undefeated in conf. play. No doubt.

I hesitantly agree with NIP. However, Butler is a tough place to play. Also, there is always some team that will sneak up on you.

The hamburger deal is from McDonalds. Every time we hold an opponent to less than 70 (or maybe 70 and under), everyone gets a free Big Mac. Personally, I think it's a conspiracy by the local heart hospital! ;D
But seriously, even if we lose the game, they hand out the coupons. It's something they do every game, not just last night.
The crowd last night was announced as 7100+. From what I saw, it certainly looked like that is an accurate count. Now, a lot of those were people who took advantage of a deal for people to get 2 free tickets, but they were a noisy bunch!
And yes, tupacrates, it was that crappy, particularly in the first half. For UWM fans, the second wasn't nearly as bad, but WSU kept up the craptacular play all night.
I think you guys are going to have a tougher time playing at Butler than at UIC. If I were betting on you losing 1 game, that's the game I would pick. WSU got lucky because Butler couldn't hit the ocean from the beach in the first game (at WSU). In the second game, Butler played much better, but we did a great job of holding on to the ball. Monserez struggled in both games, and only had a combined 12 points for the series. That was a big plus for us.
