Panthers rout new-look BulldogsBy DAN MANOYAN

After losing four starters each after their Cinderella seasons, UW-Milwaukee and Butler, by all rights, should be in the same boat.
But in the interim, the Panthers reloaded. Butler, apparently, just unloaded.
UWM outlasted an undermanned and struggling Butler team, 71-59, before a lively crowd of 4,207 Thursday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. But any resemblance the Bulldogs have to the team that burst onto the national scene last March by making it to the NCAA's Sweet 16 is purely coincidental.

MILWAUKEE -- Duane Lightfoot was in a familiar circumstance Thursday night, even if losing is unfamiliar to him.
He played basketball in memory of loved ones. He played as the sixth man, which he did a year ago in Butler's run to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Lightfoot came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points in the Bulldogs' 71-59 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a Horizon League game at U.S. Cellular Arena. The defeat was Butler's fourth in a row.

Hampton seals the deal with six late free throwsJan. 8, 2004
MILWAUKEE - Aubrey Hampton hit six free throws in the final 24 seconds of the game and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held off a late three-point ambush by Butler University en route to a 64-59 victory in Horizon League women's basketball action at U.S. Cellular Arena here Thursday (Feb. 8). Butler had a chance to tie late but Jessica Monaco's threeball with three seconds left bounced off the rim and Hampton hit two more freebies for the final margin. UWM improves to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League while Butler falls to 4-9 and 1-2 in the loop.
"I knew we had to finally put the game away in the end," Hampton said. "I think we had control of the game late but I still needed to step up, make the free throws and put it away. Fortunately I was able to do that."
Milwaukee struggled offensively in the first half as Butler went into the break with a 26-25 lead. Butler led for the majority of the half and was able to lead by as mane as nine, 22-13, after an Ashley Brenden jumper with 4:52 on the clock. Back-to-back three pointers by Kiley Johnson and Nichole Drummond cut the lead to 22-19 at the 3:08 mark. UWM finally grabbed its first lead of the game, 25-24, on a Hampton steal and breakaway before Butler's Tiffany Smith hit two free throws to finish the first half scoring.

As the UW-Milwaukee women's basketball season swings into high gear, two truths are emerging.
First, Maria Viall is looking more and more like the Horizon League's best player.
But on the flip side, she can't beat opponents by herself.
