As CP has said, we need a salesman, not an order-taker.

I happen to know for a fact that the Head Coach of Western Illinois would take the phone call... But then we would have to go to Macomb... And idk if you've been to Macomb, but it makes Whitewater look like an absolute paradise.

True, but it's infinitely better than playing Cardinal Stritch or Luther. Having been to Macomb, and grown up in Whitewater, I take exception to the comparison (and I say this as someone who knows Whitewater doesn't need stoplights when UWW is not in session).

Haven't been to Macomb yet but I'd make that trip 100%. Any Panther who has the opportunity should, give that town a little boost to its economy and say hey to Chad Boudreau and Chris Hill (and I'd like to catch up with Kyle Heikkenen too).
If you don't care about the Panther connections, this is still a very strong low-major game that would prove a test for our guys. Green Bay lost to them when GB was at full strength earlier this season; Oakland's success was at least in part due to the fact that they tested themselves early and often in the non-conference.
Not that we haven't been tested this season. I think for all the hemming and hawing the message board gave these guys, this was a pretty damn good schedule. Stout and Luther as regular season games sucked, but neither counted against our NET rating.
Here's the list for non-con with their NET ratings:
Stout (N/A) @ Providence (58) @ Colorado (25) Luther (N/A) Stetson (209) Siena (353) Southern Miss (239) @ St. Thomas (159) @ UC Davis (168) Longwood (162) @ Chattanooga (140)
So when you look at the non-con slate, that's...actually pretty good. We just got BJ hurt at an inopportune time and practiced with a team that suddenly needed a new starting PG.
Siena is the only true stinker on that schedule. How could the coaches know that Southern Miss was gonna drop from 87 to 239? We'd like to play WIU and it would be a tough game, but they're at 260 in the NET.
Now, you might say, "let's load up on buy games." Except if we're looking strong (losing few transfers of consequence, perhaps BJ somehow comes back), the middling high-majors that we'd want to take a paycheck from (the LSUs, Minnesotas and Georgias of the world) wouldn't schedule us because we could beat them.
Then how do you go to the strong mid-majors? If we lose BJ, we're going to them and telling them we're going to be an asset to their NET rating wherever the game is? With enough uncertainty and being a 20-win team, we'd look like we could possibly be that game for them OR we could look like the team that beats them, loses to a bunch of other teams, plays a couple absolute stinkers in the conference schedule and tanks their NET.
I'm telling you, it is incredibly difficult to schedule when you are a good-but-not-great mid-major. The fact that all but three of our non-conference D-I games ended up in the top 165 is shocking.
It's also why a lot of us used to shout from the rooftops not to add the Alphabet Soup Indiana schools. The Horizon League grabbed IUPUI simply because it justified keeping the conference office in Indianapolis. Detroit Mercy is a shell of itself and what kind of coach do you think they'll be able to hire while also paying Mike Davis? RMU is seemingly circling the drain and hasn't figured out how to win after moving up conferences.
IMO, the conference needs to get serious about a 12th member so they can enact a conference schedule that protects the top teams as much as they can.
With RMU, IUPUI and UDM, each Horizon League school had six sub-300 games on their conference schedule. If you add a 12th team (and prioritize potential for immediate men's basketball success), you could build this schedule:
Preseason 1-6 play round robin, 12 games. 7-12 play round robin, 12 games. Each team 1-6 plays each team 7-12 once, thre home/three away. Eighteen total conference games, if you're lucky this limits you to a few sub-300 games for the top teams. The downside is when you get a team picked to finish in the bottom half who ends up surprising you, also you need to have a good idea of who your top/bottom six are to get the schedule done early.
Build the postseason in such a way that makes it unlikely the top finishers get to see the bottom 4-5 teams. We all know where I stand regarding the conference tournament - I feel like we should have traveled to Rochester, Michigan last week - but there are other ways of getting it done.
We also need conference challenges. I highly recommend getting on board with anyone and everyone that isn't SWAC/MEAC low-major level. A Summit League challenge should have happened a decade ago. MAC? Absolutely. We need to help coaches fill out their schedules so they're not scrambling and can focus on making the best choices for their teams for the few remaining spots.
