No technical fouls AND a victory. Coincidence? No B.J. Freeman AND no technical fouls. Coincidence?

No B.J. Freeman AND no technical fouls. Coincidence? Are you hinting the Panthers are better without BJ Freeman? I would hope not. We beat CSU more handily with BJ than without. Our defense is much improved, but there were times during the first half the offense looked stagnant without him. This team would be scary good if we had a pass first point guard facilitating the offense.

THIS team MIGHT be better off without B.J., as much as many (most?) of us can't conceive of that. It seems as if there's a lot of drama (and not much defense) with him on the court. It's nothing personal. Only what I've observed so far this season.

No B.J. Freeman AND no technical fouls. Coincidence? Are you hinting the Panthers are better without BJ Freeman? I can help answer this question objectively by looking at the team record against D1 competition, especially by drilling down to peer competition. In the Panthers' case, peer competition is defined by teams currently 121 (Chattanooga) to 271 (Robert Morris) in NET rankings. Without BJ, the team record versus D1 is 4-3. This is entirely against peer competition. With BJ, the team record is 6-10. Two losses were against P6 teams, which the Panthers would have likely lost with or without. But four of the wins were against the bottom six teams based on D1 Net rankings, which arguably the Panthers would have won without BJ. In other words, the Panthers' record with BJ against peer competition is 2-8. 4-3 against peer competition without BJ and 2-8 with him. The records speak for themselves. It does not take into account subjective aspects of BJ's presence such as on and off court behavior (technical fouls, team initiated suspensions as well as arguably defensive lapses and turnovers) and the carryover of such "leadership" to the rest of the team.

I appreciate metrics and analytics vs gut feelings, so I will admit you have a strong case, and I am willing to change my mind. That said, if we have been better without BJ so far this season, I believe we can adapt and use BJ in a way for the remainder of the season where we are stronger with him than without him.

I did not think of the information in my post as "metrics and analytics," but I guess in a simple sense it is. I was just thinking in terms of the bottom line - wins and losses. I like your belief. A former head coach from our glory years proclaimed his job was to put his players in position for the team to succeed. That is exactly what Bart needs to do with BJ. If he can do that before the season is over, we could be in for an exciting March, and Bart will have earned every penny of his salary.

As has been noted elsewhere by others, B.J. is a HIGH usage player. Generally speaking, it takes him a LOT of shots to get his 18.7 points per game. Obviously, he's of great benefit to the team when he gets on an extreme roll like he did vs. Stetson in the CBI (or Jordy Aaron did three times vs. Green Bay in 2014). That just hasn't happened nearly enough this year to overcome all the histrionics and bad defense.

The game is played in 3 phases we are better on the defensive end with freeman. The only reason is he just doesn’t try on that end. Too many bad habits. Wild cause he can be a fine defender when he really wants to be.

BJ Freeman leads the team rebounding per game, which is another reason he is on the floor.

THIS team MIGHT be better off without B.J., as much as many (most?) of us can't conceive of that. It seems as if there's a lot of drama (and not much defense) with him on the court. It's nothing personal. Only what I've observed so far this season. Then you don’t understand basketball if you think that.
