Coming into the year KenPom had Milwaukee at 230. After getting all the way up to 218 after the fight against providence we have seen us plummet down to 255.
The main reasoning for this fall to start the year has been the defense which now ranks 331st in the country. This includes us being bottom 20 in the country in the following categories: eFG%, TS%, and Rebound rate. Meaning teams rarely miss and when they do they grab their own rebound… which is not a great combo.
We have seen an uptick in the offensive rating this season mostly due to a reduction in turnovers this season going from a turnover rate of 21% down to 15%. Not to bear more bad news but this turnover rate is unlikely to stay this low. Last season we played at a top 10 tempo in the country which often times led to more turnovers. Due to not getting stops this season the offense has slowed to 89th in pace so far. As they look to push the pace more often moving forward does the turnover % begin to creep back up which has been the 1 positive so far offensively this season.

People wondering why the big programs in state don’t play us, this is a good place to start. We have a very talented team hovering in the 250 KenPom range, and at this juncture of the season, who knows what team will show up on a given night. All risk no reward. I hear from fans” it doesn’t matter , we won’t get an at large anyways”, fine, but we won’t get teams to play us in the non con either if we are constantly bad until conference play.

I love the spirit of your post, buppie, but the jury very much remains out on whether or not we have a "very talented team."

Coming into the Siena game, T-Rank (Bart Torvik's system) had Milwaukee 195th in D1, and Siena at 338, giving the Panthers -9.5 this game. If you scroll to the bottom you can see all of our player's metrics (not yet updated from the Siena game). barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Milwaukee

Ah old Bart, only positive looking at that is the fact we seem to have improved in terms of not turning the ball over so much. Now just need to ensure quality not rushed shots are being taken.

In just over a week since the last update we have dropped to 284th in the country. Since 1997 this would be the 4th worst finish in UWM history for some context. The defense is down to 347th in the country while being 348th in 3P% and 361st (2nd last) in giving up offensive rebounds. At this moment the team couldn’t stop an average intramural team and it has only gotten worse.

PFW is way overrated at #57, but even if it were 157, kudos to them. Last year was suppose to be their year with all those experienced 23+ year old players that have since moved on. I'm not a fan of the portal, but apparently it works for them. It is a key driver for a program to maintain success or turn things around quickly. Same for YSU. Let's hope Milwaukee can take better advantage of the portal going forward.
