Today vs South Dakota State in Minnesota Next Saturday vs Valpo in Illinois LOL! Well, it's not a secret anymore (and I'm upset that the scrimmage against the Faux Mystiquers isn't an actual game)!

With all due respect ... if the assistant isn't getting the desired games, maybe the head honcho should pick up the phone.

It is totally frustrating that the Panthers and peer opponents can incur the costs of playing practice games against each other in front of no fans/supporters/viewers, and then play home games against the likes of Stout and Luther.
I know it happens throughout the D1 basketball landscape, although SDSU and Valpo play only one non-D1 game this year. For me, it borders on being an act of selfishness by the D1 basketball industry and an insult to it's fans.

With all due respect ... if the assistant isn't getting the desired games, maybe the head honcho should pick up the phone. The program needs a salesman who can close scheduling deals, not an order taker. Maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, transparency regarding scheduling is lacking. A great topic for a Lunch and Learn (or equivalent) to be presented by the program during the offseason: "Scheduling men's basketball non-conference games - an honest, inside look including the challenges involved."

I would welcome the discussion. I don’t understand how these scrimmages work. Are the really meant to be secret? I can’t believe the secrecy would be tolerated by boosters at a Duke for example. I can see how they benefit a team. Playing against each other must get tedious. College sports are now a year long experience with breaks and other related activities. I would be interested in what are NCAA rules for these games. Are referees and media allowed? Can fans get stats, matchups, and injury reports? It all seems strange to me. Do tell!

I would welcome the discussion. I don’t understand how these scrimmages work. Are the really meant to be secret? It's against NCAA rules to have spectators at them. I can’t believe the secrecy would be tolerated by boosters at a Duke for example. Any school with boosters in the room would probably have to have a clear off-the-record agreement with the other school to not say anything. They record these scrimmages, and I can tell you I've watched several of them, so I'm sure boosters at big schools get to see them. And I'm pretty sure we were breaking NCAA rules when I saw them, because they somehow fell into the DVD player in the coaches' offices when none of them were around for some reason. I can see how they benefit a team. Playing against each other must get tedious. College sports are now a year long experience with breaks and other related activities. It's more than that. Coaches can stop the scrimmage any time they want, they can be on the floor, they can give direct input. It's about giving the team another group to test out against, but in a way that allows them to do more real-time instruction than they can during exhibition games. Every coach I've ever spoken with greatly prefers these closed scrimmages to exhibition games. I would be interested in what are NCAA rules for these games. Are referees and media allowed? Can fans get stats, matchups, and injury reports? It all seems strange to me. Do tell! Referees are paid to be there, so yeah. Media are not allowed to be there, as they are spectators. I suppose you can get stats and the like, but they're not exactly full of useful information. Just know it's the coaches' preferred way of playing preseason games. The benefits far outweigh the gate of playing yet another lesser team at home. We already do that enough as it is.

Wow, just getting back to iPad! Great information and Thanks to all. It must be a good experience for coaches and players. Still I think they should be open to the public and send by fans via whatever.

Sounds like the scrimmage against South Dakota State, with no gate collected and no one in attendance, was awesome! Meanwhile, we await Stout in two weeks ...

Sorry if I missed those.. I'm just gonna assume this is Fran's new handle and welcome you back, you handsome man. Apparently we won 2 of the 3 periods and got big performances from BJ, Erik Pratt and Aaron Franklin. That's what I heard secondhand, so I suppose it's possible we won 3 of 5 pentahalves and got a big performance from James Eayrs, whose theme music hit and he interfered in the match by smashing the other surprise entrant Mike Daum with a steel chair. You know how games of telephone work.
