lemme make sure I know how these next 2 weeks go, buuuuuuuuuuuut... NKU at home. The Norse haven't played a game since January 2nd. They haven't played a league game since mid-December. Then Wright State on the road. The Raiders already have three league losses. The series next weekend which will be most interesting next weekend after the NKU at Milwaukee series will be the series between IUPUI and Green Bay.

Yeah if NKU cancels (again) and they don't somehow give us IUPUI again, I think I'm ready to call it. WSU has the talent to punch up, but even if we lose 2 the rest of the way we're in the driver's seat in a BIG way.

The remaining league schedule reads thus: - NKU at home.
- Wright State on the road.
- Oakland at home.
- UIC on the road.
The first two series seem more challenging to me than the last two. But the series sweep of IUPUI especially gives me confidence that this Panther team is the real deal. I would have been okay with a series split with the Jaguars, and when IUPUI seemed to have withstood the Panthers' standard third quarter surge and gone on a run to push their lead to eleven points at 50-39, I rather expected a split. There was no quit in the Panthers, though. They worked their way back into the lead. The Jaguars had opportunities late in regulation and in the first overtime to win the game, but couldn't get over the top. It occurs to me that this Jaguars squad hasn't been in a lot of close games this season. They lost to Notre Dame by eight. All their other leagues they won going away. The Panthers have been winning, but not always running away with games. The first Cleveland State game was a four point win. The first Green Bay game was a three point win. These Panthers manage to find a way to win. Lost amidst all the other success is that Coach Rechlicz is now over .500 in winning percentage overall. She has had some pretty good teams, and some not so good teams, especially in her first few seasons, but she has been allowed to build the program, and she appears to have built a good one.

WBB is now receiving votes in the Top 25 poll, possibly for the first time ever? They are 32nd in the nation with 4 votes. They are also now in the top 40 of the NET ranking, with wins @ #42 Marquette, and @ #36 IUPUI twice (IUPUI's only other loss is by 7pts @ #53 Notre Dame).
MKE's one loss is @ #62 Bowling Green by just 2pts!
This is the the highest ranked WBB team in MKE history at this point of the season. I can't wait to see them keep going, get a national ranking, and win a well-deserved championship!

I think one or more of Sandy Bothham's best teams made it on to the D1 Top 25 list, but were never highly ranked.
The Mid Major Top 25 has only been around about 10 year or so. The latest edition of the poll will be released tomorrow.

Going in to last weekend, IUPUI and Milwaukee were 6th and 7th in the Mid Major Top 25 poll. After the Panthers' sweep, they are 6th, and the Jaguars fell to 15th.
As far as overall D1 polling, the Panthers were ranked 38th overall. They got one vote in the WBCA Top 25.

Northern Kentucky's women's basketball is threatening to become for Milwaukee what Green Bay's program has been: a nemesis, that the Panthrers struggle to beat.
The Norse won all three games last season, winning by double digits in all three games by pulling away in the second half of the games. That happened again last night, the final score was 67-50 Norse. Tonight, the margin wasn't as great (the final was 68-61), but again the Panthers were able to do no better than make a close game of it before the Norse took control. Tonight the Panthers had the Norse lead down to three after going on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter, but then were unable to get over the top. Back-to-back empty possessions doomed the comeback effort.
The Panthers had three players score in double figures: Sydney Staver with 17, followed by Brandi Bisping with 14 and Megan Walstad with 13 (and 12 rebounds for another double-double).
Next up for the Panthers, a road series at Wright State. The Norse host Green Bay, who split this weekend with IUPUI.

For the third consecutive game, the Panthers were down big early, and never found a way to overcome the deficit, losing to Wright State 67-56.
Just about everything the Panthers were doing during their twelve game win streak in league play, they have not been doing in their three game losing streak. Opponents have been successful for the most part in limiting the Panthers' inside game, and as a result their shooting percentage has suffered. The Panthers have not been getting to the free throw line with the regularity that they were doing earlier in the season. They have been out rebounded for the most part, leading to a lot of one shot offensive possessions.
Despite their struggles last weekend, heading into this weekend the Panthers were still in position for the top seed in the tournament. Today's loss won't help, but the Panthers got help from Green Bay, who won a close game at Northern Kentucky, so that there is no longer an undefeated team in the league. Snapping the losing streak tomorrow against the Raiders would be a big step toward maintaining the top seed, with a home series against Oakland, a team trying to get into the top five for a bye in the tournament, and an away series against UIC remaining on the calendar.

In his pre-game comments on the Black and Gold Network, Matt Menzel noted that the Panthers have played better in the second game of league series this season. In the first half, that trend continued. The Panthers led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, and 26-23 at half.
But the third quarter was a different story. The Panthers pushed the lead to six points, only to suffer a five-plus minute scoring drought, get outscored 17-8 in the quarter, and finish the quarter down 40-34. The Panthers then went 0-6 to start the fourth quarter (a total of 10 plus minutes without scoring) and the Raiders went up 44-34. The Panthers finally ended the drought, but were not completely overcome the Raider lead. The final was 56-49.
Next weekend's series at home with Oakland be really important for tournament seeding.
Elsewhere in the league, Green Bay completed the series sweep at Northern Kentucky, winning another close game. Oakland and Youngstown State completed sweeps against Purdue Fort Wayne and Robert Morris, respectively.

Feeling good for the regular season right now. Obviously can't screw around and lose to Oakland, but Wright State has GB & NKU left. If they give up a game or less the rest of the way, they earned the hell outta that title.
