For those who cannot access the link:: The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee athletic department is exiting terrestrial radio broadcasts for men’s basketball games in favor of online and app audio and changing its television broadcast partner while retaining Wayne Larrivee for play-by-play. Panthers men’s basketball aired for 12 seasons on WISN-AM (1130) under an arrangement where UWM paid the station’s owner iHeart Media for air time. Prior to that, the games were on another iHeart station, WOKY-AM (920), for four seasons. Starting with the upcoming season, men’s basketball will join UWM women’s basketball in a digital format. The live audio coverage will be available via the Black & Gold Radio network that can be accessed via www.mkepanthers.com or an app in conjunction with www.mixlr.com. The men’s basketball regular season tips off Nov. 9 when the Panthers play Western Michigan. Scott Warras will continue as the men’s basketball play-by-play audio announcer. UWM athletics spokesman Adam Schemm said Wednesday the decision to drop over-the-air radio will save the department the “five-figure” fee it pays for WISN radio. He said Division I NCAA basketball programs similar to UWM's already have made the switch as more consumers shift their listening away from radio. “It made the most sense to move,” Schemm said. “It’s the best return on investment.” Likewise, UWM’s departure from Fox Sports Wisconsin to its new television home WCGV-TV (“My24”) will save “five figures,” Schemm said. WCGV will carry one men’s game in January, two in February 2020 and one women’s game in February. The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. Fox Sports Wisconsin carried UWM game broadcasts during the 2017-2018 and 2018-19 seasons featuring both the men's and women's teams. Green Bay Packers radio announcer Larrivee will return as the play-by-play man for Panther men’s basketball. He is joined by returning color commentator and former Panther player Justin Lettenberger. UWM athletics has a multimedia rights agreement with Learfield Communications that guarantees revenue for the school's athletic program. The multimedia rights deal is for 10 years with a total guarantee of at least $3.09 million over that period. ___________________ This changes nothing for me, as streaming has been my only radio play by play option for the past four seasons and most games have been viewable on ESPN streaming apps. Regarding the loss of general over-the-air exposure, the program already lacks relevance in the Milwaukee media market, as has been discussed often here. Therefore, the cost savings are likely worth it. However, I feel bad for the few fans that do not have streaming access.

Radio is almost dead in today's market. Most stream radio! Who even listens to a radio boardcast. It's smaller than year's before. That's just a fact. Numbers don't lie. As for the Brewers as an example. Every game is on TV. If you are not at home, most stream the boardcast on the FOX Sports App. You can't even stream the radio boardcast for the Brewers on 620 WTMJ website or the 620 WTMJ App. How many even know that? You MUST listen to the Brewers boardcast on Sirius XM or you the MLB App.
Back to the Panthers. I listen to many road games for the Panthers. Yet, I stream it off the IHeart Radio App. Not on the radio itself. Now, I will just have to stream the game, off the wedsite. Doesn't sound like an issue.
As for TV. I think it's stinks the Panthers are leaving FS Wisconsin. Yet, I'm sure the ratings are in, and the cost is not worth it. Having three local men's game on channel 24 is fine. I wish it was a bit more. Every game is on the ESPN App. (espn3/espn +) So, fans who care can get it.

This is a bit disappointing since it will be tougher to listen to the game while driving or while on a walk (without using data), but I’m guessing this will become more and more common as time goes on.
I’m not sure that the change in the traditional tv station is really a negative. I wouldn’t be surprised if viewership actually increases since the number of cord cutters who want to watch the game in the Milwaukee area will exceed the number of people outside Milwaukee receiving FSW who want to watch the game. If UWM saves money with this plan, it’s a no brainer to me.

The games on Channel 24 last season were exclusive to Channel 24. They were not on the ESPN apps or any other streaming venues. I hope that changes this year so those of us out of the broadcast signal can watch the games.

WTMJ's ratings are highest during the Brewer season, especially during winning seasons. Listeners are not only attracted to the game but other programming because listeners tend to keep tuned in to 620. It is the same in other markets.

The ratings outside of live sports on WTMJ have tanked! There programming changes has tons to do with it. Charlie Sykes being gone. There afternoon show is a joke, etc. Yes, sports are still big. Yet, were talking Brewers, Bucks and Packers. The thing that is keeping WTMJ going. Many can just stream the Bucks and Brewers on the Fox App when not at home and avoid radio. Which many do. I remember being at a meeting about 5 years ago about Panthers games ratings radio vs streaming numbers. To my surprise at the time, many just streamed the radio boardcast.
