If you’re giving up on the season, why bother doing it with a different HC? Especially since Philbin will presumably have to make the calls and do everything McCarthy did giving him as little time with Rodgers as McCarthy had. It’s the exact same problem you had before but now with someone even less qualified. The whole “start looking for a coach process” argument is weak because if you need an extra month before you can begin interviewing potential candidates, it’s probably because you don’t know what you’re doing.

I think that it's very fair. McCarthy gets a head start on his job search and the Packers get a head start on theirs. Why be sixth in line when you can be first? Honestly, they should have done this after last year. They were going to pull the pin at the end of the year anyway and saw that the team was playing without focus or inspiration so they took action now. I don't see what's so morally wrong with this.

Why be sixth in line when you can be first? Unless they’re pursuing college coaches, they can’t interview any NFL personnel until their season is over or if they’re on a bye week in the playoffs. There’s no order other than what the candidate chooses. Honestly, they should have done this after last year. They were going to pull the pin at the end of the year anyway and saw that the team was playing without focus or inspiration so they took action now. I don't see what's so morally wrong with this. Unless they’re trying to make the playoffs, what does it matter? Finishing with two more wins accomplishes what? I’d rather tank for the better draft pick, especially when the crop of QBs isn’t projected to be that good and you can trade back. I have no moral objection, it’s just pointless this late in the season.

The Packers ran out of healthy players, and were eliminated from the playoff chase by Chicago 24-17.
Second consecutive year of missing the playoffs, and the second consecutive sub-.500 record. And, i would argue, the second consecutive year injuries derailed the season. Last year, the injury to Rodgers was the main issue.
This season Rodgers had to play through an injury, but it was mostly injuries to others that hurt the team, especially on defense. When the Packers declared Kenny Clark inactive for the game today, what little hope i had for the game was pretty much gone, as that meant all of the Packers best linemen were out. Nearly every player counted on to contribute to a significant improvement in the defense missed significant time this season.
At this point I don’t see why the Packers have so much money invested in Nick Perry, who has yet to go an entire season without missing time. Kevin King has a smaller sample size, but the same issue: it doesn’t matter how talented he is if he can’t stay on the field. King is just two years into his rookie contract, so the salary cap hit is not so bad as for Perry, and King still could get and stay healthy and contribute at the expected level. At this point i don’t expect to get more out of Perry.
So now fans get two weeks of playing out the string and platitudes about playing for pride and finishing the right way.

This is the way the season ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.
Apologies to TS Eliot.

This franchise appears to be in big, big trouble. Murphy had better not bungle the hiring of the next head coach.

This franchise appears to be in big, big trouble. Murphy had better not bungle the hiring of the next head coach. C***eyed optimists want to believe that a new coach and a few draft choices will make it all better again. I don't buy it. If I was GM I would be looking for a team willing to spend heavily to try to buy a Super Bowl now. In other words, go for a "Lynn Dickey" trade. Except this time, the Packers should be the ones off-loading an aging QB with at best a couple good but declining years ahead in return for an arm-load of draft picks and cap money to buy free agents. With or without Rodgers, the Packers are going nowhere the next couple years. And by the time they might be able to reconfigure to make a run, he'll be in his late 30s. Father Time is still undefeated. The Packers need a full makeover, not a roulette wheel spin based on memories of how good 12 used to be. The question is whether the execs have the guts to tell the fans the truth.

Weird, I thought firing McCarthy was going to re-energize the team? I mean practically everything was his fault so things would obviously improve now that he's gone. It's as if there are deeper, underlying issues people chose to ignore...

And replace Rodgers with...Joe Flacco? Teddy Bridgewater? Derek Carr? Blake Bortles? Would you prefer to draft a QB in a year that's considered a bad QB class?

Why does it matter if the Packers go 4-12 or 8-8 next year? Find a journeyman QB for next year and go from there. Do you really think Rodgers is going to have fewer injuries going forward? The Packers need a complete rebuild. That's impossible while Rodgers is around given his contract and his accelerating limitations. Unfortunately, my guess is that his real value on the market right now is diminished, as other teams without the emotional history with him that Packers' fans have will take a more clear-eyed view. But if you're the GM, you have to test that water.
P.S. Had a conversation with a guy recently who is VERY plugged in to Packers management who told me that they think he's uncoachable at this point. Maybe he just got to the point where he tuned McCarthy out, but that's a problem in itself.
I qualify all of this by freely admitting I'm only a marginal pro football or Packer fan, and I don't know nearly as much about the sport as I do about hoops. Basically the Packers are just a way to waste a couple hours on a Sunday for me. But that also gives me some objectivity about Rodgers; he's declining rapidly.

I can only imagine the calls GMs get for players/draft picks regardless of the sport. Some are probably hilariously dumb and others probably want to make fans pull their hair out over the team not accepting the terms. However, players of Rodgers' caliber often have veto power on their future destination. Of the teams in need of a franchise QB for 2019 - Raiders, Broncos, Giants, Jaguars & Dolphins, none are arguably attractive to him because none are a QB away from Super Bowl contention. Why would he trade one rebuild project for another?

Not saying he would. Just saying the GM should see what’s out there. Like I said, he probably has a couple good years left (IF he can avoid injuries). I’m happy to watch him play. But if he’s not enough to get them to the Super Bowl, then I expect the Packers are a long way away from contending for another title, because there’s not much around him.

I’m not a believer in the necessity for making a “sexy/big name” hire and the Packers are all-in on that game plan. Under LaFleur, the Titans offense ranked 29th in passing, 27th in pts/game and 25th in total yards!
