Good hire. This is exactly the level Rob should be at.

Gophers currently have 4 scholarships open. Uh oh... Shae Mitchell? No, just any non-blue blood program with 4 open scholarships in mid-April is a disaster.

Great move for Rob and his family. There is rarely any crossover between the kinds of recruits we can attract (and certainly much less so since the H League fell apart) and the kind who can play in the Big Ten, so it shouldn't have much effect on us. If I was Greg Gard I'd be less happy about it from a recruiting standpoint. Rob's deep ties in Wisconsin and Illinois, and his ability now to recruit the same caliber of players that Wisconsin recruits could create some unwelcome new competition for the Badgers. I'm sure that as a friend Greg is happy for Rob, but Rob is an extremely competitive guy, and given that Greg passed him over for Dean Oliver last year, I'm guessing that Rob is looking for a little payback on the recruiting trail.

Jeter's move here could be a smart play in the not too distant future. I don't see Pitino lasting more than two years if he continues finishing in the bottom half of the conference. Rob can use this time frame to get in the good graces with the AD to be Pitino's eventual replacement.

It would be extremely rare for the assistant to a failed coach to get elevated, so I'm not sure that scenario is very likely.
I actually think the hire has a lot to do with the fact that the AD and administration at Minnesota are probably very tired of the character and behavior issues that have occurred under Little Ricky. Rob comes in as a guy with a great reputation for doing it the right way, recruiting good kids and applying discipline when necessary. By the way, I hadn't realized it until I looked up their coaches, but last year they hired Duffy's brother Ed Conroy as an assistant after he lost the Tulane job. So Ricky now has two experienced head coaches as wing men.

If I was a head coach who had even the slightest inkling that my assistant was actively gunning for my job, he would be on the street within an hour

Rob doesn’t need to either because Pitino will get himself fired.
