The Milwaukee's second round WBI game with St Francis University started slowly, with the Panthers up 5-2 at the first timeout. From there, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to finish the quarter. SFU was not hitting anything.
The Red Flash started the second quarter on a 11-0 run, to tie the score at 15-sll. St Francis used pressure defense to break Milwaukee's momentum. The Panthers managed to adjust, but the game continued to be back and forth. The Panthers were hampered by foul trouble. Steph Kostowics had three fouls and Jenny Lindner had two. The Red Flash took a 25-24 lead into half-time.
Play picked up a bit to start the third quarter, with Milwaukee outscoring St Francis 11-9 to take a 35-34 lead in the first five minutes of the quarter. The Panthers might have built more of lead, but the Red Flash defense bothered them into some turnovers. Kostowicz had 11 points 10 rebounds and Jamie Reit had 10 points off the bench. Kostowicz picked up her fourth foul trying for another rebound, bu the Panthers responded by opening a five point lead, 43-38 to the end of the quarter.
The Panthers increased the lead to eight in the first five minutes of the fourth, as Lindner got into double figures. The lead reached 10 at 65-55 on another Reit three-pointer in the last minute of the quarter. Reit hit two free-throws to increase the lead to 67-55 with 30 seconds left. The final score was 67-57.
Kostowicz had another double-double, with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Reit also scored 15, shooting 3-5 from distance. Lindner finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, as the Panthers out-rebounded the Red Flash 50-32.
The Panthers have now advanced to the semi-final at UNC Greensboro at 6:00 pm CDT on Thursday.

I have to add how much i missed hearing Matt Menzel call the game on the radio. i was watching the video feed.
The St Francis radio team was okay, although they struggled with Steph Kostowicz's name. The color guy insisted on referring to Milwaukee as Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the video portion of the broadcast identified Milwaukee as UC-Milwaukee. Apparently our university has relocated to California or Colorado.
Out of curiosity, i tuned in briefly to the Rice-UT Rio Grand Valley game, where the play-by-play guy informed the listener that all the WBI basketball games today were done except for the game still in progress.
I tuned into the replay of the Brown-UNC at Greensboro, where the play-by-play guy informed the listeners that a UNCG player was the second best free-throw shooter on her team on the floor, second only to a player who was not in the game.

Milwaukee plays UNC Greensboro on thursday Game is at 6:00 p.m. CDT. The game will be broadcast on the So Con digital network: www.socondigitalnetwork.com/uncgi recommend turning the audio down and listening to Matt Menzel's call of the game, if available, no matter how poorly the two feeds sync up. On the plus side, they know enough to refer to the Milwaukee Panthers.

The Panthers started slowly, having problems adjusting to pressure defense from the Spartans of UNC at Greensboro, and didn't shoot well in the first quarter. UNCG scored eight points off Panther turnovers in the first half. Steph Kostowicz already had a double-double at half-time with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sierra Ford-Washington had seven points and two assists at the half, and the Panthers had cut the lead to two at 31-29.
The third quarter started with a 6-0 Spartan run, and Milwaukee took a time-out with 8:32 in the quarter. The Spartans scored four more points before the Panthers got on the board for the quarter with two free-throws from Kostowic and two form Jamie Reit. The Panthers had nine turn-overs in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Panthers got the lead back down to six on a layup from Kelsey Cunningham, and both teams struggled to hit shots for the next few minutes. Two more free throws, this time from Alexis Lindstrom cut the lead back to 41-37. After a layup by UNCG, the Panthers missed a golden opportunity to cut the lead further when Jenny Lindner missed two free-throws. Ford-Washington made up for the misses, but the Panthers closed out the quarter by fouling on a three-point shot. UNCG made all three free-throws to reopen a 46-39 lead at the end of the quarter.
UNCG scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter on the strength several offensive rebounds and Panthers turnover, and the rout was on. It took the Panthers three and a half minutes to score a field goal. Coach Rechlicz sent in the bench players with about two minutes left.
In the end, the Spartans defense was too much for the Panthers. Turnovers and poor shooting prevented Milwaukee from being in the game in the second half. The final score was 59-49.

The WBI was the Panthers's season in miniature: two wins (one easy, with everything clicking, and one where they had to work harder, but in the end they put things together and got the win) and one loss (where they didn't play consistent defense and shot poorly themselves).
Statistically it was a very good year, as the they tied the program D1 record for wins, and set a record for games played. They got their first two post-season wins (their record after the league tournament is now 2-4).
The team loses two key contributors in Sierra Ford-Washington and Alexis Lindstrom, and two others who stepped in and played well as needed. One can wonder how much more Jordyn Swan's contribution might have been had she not had serious knee injuries.
Next season, Jenny Lindner, Steph Kostowicz, and Bailey Farley will be seniors, so three fifths of the staring lineup will be very experienced. Lizzie Odegard will be a sophomore coming off a league All-Freshman team performance.
The Panthers will have the services of Ryaen Johnson, a good defender and rebounder who was spending this season working on her offensive game. Alyssa Fischer, who had worked her way into the rotation at the end of the 15-16 season, missed most of this season after an injury in the eighth game. If she can get back to her form in her first season, she can be a contributor. Jaye Two Bears will be another year past a serious knee injury, and could be another help.
Recently Coach Rechlicz tweeted that all the incoming freshmen for next season had played in their post-season tournaments, so some help can be expected there as well.

Coach Rechlicz talks about the season: youtu.be/or0Rxx3CFPwPretty much what i expected to hear. Her comment about the level of play in the Horizon League was spot on, i think. Green Bay is still Green Bay, but the top half of the league played better this year than last, and a couple of teams in the bottom half of the league were hampered by injuries to key players. Next year will be interesting. WBI wrapup: Rice beat UNC Greensboro for the WBI title. Steph Kostowicz added an All-WBI tournament team honor to her resume for the season, which was already pretty impressive.
