Many of you know me and that I have a daughter. She is currently 9 years old, 4th grade.
After years of just kind of asking "so you want to maybe go outside and pass/throw a ball (baseball or basketball) around?" with an answer of "No, I don't think I want to play sports." ... All of sudden this year, "I want to try softball Daddy." And now this fall, "I want to try basketball.". We are a bit behind the other girls.
Helped coach the softball team. She improved greatly over the summer. Big difference. Not the best, not the worst, probably around 10th of the 15 girls. Good enough to say she wants to try again next year.
Basketball is taking awhile. I didn't get a chance to work with her before she started. She did do a few things at a YMCA class which was okay, not great.
Now for her rec league, I didn't sign up to be a coach. The coach is less than great. Example: She is letting some of these girls play defense, in front of their girl. Yes, in front of their girl. With their back to girl they are guarding and a wide open lane to the bucket. My girl is of course not doing that. Also a couple of the 5th graders have been, let's say, less than supportive of her. I could keep going. So yeah, it's driving me nuts.
She asked if I could help her out. She asked for help! Sweet!! I take off work this week every year to be with her over Christmas vacation and we're going over to the YMCA for a couple hours. Found an excellent well organized website with lots of drills broken down by beginner to college. Set a good workout plan. Told her we're going to do some fun things and some not so fun things. But when we're done, you will be able to walk back on that court next time with confidence.
Contacted the other 4th grade parents to see of their daughters wanted to join us. A couple did, but were out of town. One is going to show up with her Dad. This Dad and I have decided to be the coaches next year as the current ones will be moving up with their daughters. We hope and assume at least. He has actually played college ball for Superior and Stevens Point and coached youth teams before. I think these girls are in good shape next year.
Many of you are facebook friends as well. Be looking for her picture over there. I already told her she is going to look bad-ass. I need to build up her confidence. Since she's only been playing for basically a month, she's unsure what she's supposed to be doing, and that leads to not being very aggressive out there. It's holding her back from the other girls who have played for a few years. So if you wouldn't mind and have the time, please post some good words of encouragement for her. Thanks.
