First, Steve Spurrier, now Bo Ryan. Not a fan of coaches quitting in the middle of the season. Doesn't set the best example to the kids.

A couple ways to look at it ...
1. Bo honestly felt the time was now, he had nothing more to give, and this way Gard would have the Big Ten season to convince Alvarez to give him the job full-time. Also, Gard's father recently passed from cancer, so the timing for him taking over before the start of the season was bad to say the least.
2. Bo manipulated the system to get Gard a shot. Bo wanted Gard to take over before the season, Barry said no and said he'd pick the guy. In turn, Bo said he'd coach this year and "maybe five more." Instead, Bo coaches through the non-conference portion and calls it quits, putting UW in no other position than to hand it over to Gard.

Barry's ego gets in the way.

If ever a guy earned the right to retire exactly how and when he retired, it was Bo Ryan. All the blather about manipulating the hiring of his successor or how his uncertain status affected recruiting is literally just a momentary passing cloud.
Wisconsin made two immense mistakes in its basketball program in the last half century. The first was screwing up the Bobby Knight hire, the second was not hiring Bo Ryan at least ten years earlier. Fortunately for UW they corrected the second mistake in time to have a wondrous run.
Personally, I expect Greg Gard to keep the run going. I think he has the potential to be Wisconsin's Tom Izzo to Bo's Jud Heathcote.

Apparently there is a bit more to the story.
He was going to retire before the season, then his successor's Dad died in October, so he agreed to coach the first semester of school then retire mid-year.
Only a few in the "inner circle" knew this was the plan.

Madison isn't going anywhere this year, and Bo wanted to take care of Gard. I have as much chance of coaching Madison as Gard does next season, so this maybe sets him up for something else. In the meantime, Bo checks out before the season really turns ugly once the conference season starts. Anybody seriously think Bo would hang it up if they were 11-1 and not 7-5? Not a chance.

You could tell Jeter knew after the game last week.

You bring up a great point. Gard's year is as much about auditioning for other jobs as it is for UW. No chance Barry just hands him a job at the end of the year, short of a 2016 Final Four appearance. Even that might not be enough.

I absolutely believe Bo had a known for a few weeks he was done; he probably knew it was time to walk away after they lost to Western Illinois at home. However, I think it's also true he wouldn't have bailed if this team was anywhere close to a team he's always had. As Bobby Knight once said, "This is not a very good basketball team."

There was no manipulation by Bo, the current team and record had nothing to do with the timing of his retirement.
On Madison radio, in an interview Bo said he and Barry had discussions regarding the timing of the retirement, not whether he would or wouldn't retire. Barry knew that Bo was going retire. According to Bo they both agreed end of semester. Tuesday was the last day of class for the Fall semester. In his mind he met his obligation, coach until the end of the semester. The only fault you could give Bo is that he probably could have waited until finals were done.
It would appear that Bo stayed on to coach as Gard was dealing with his father's battle with cancer. It would have been difficult for Gard to run the team during this difficult time.

Bo, imo is one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history. you dont win 747 games, win 74% of your Big Ten games, and win 95% of your home games, without being an all-timer. Bucky was a missed free throw away from back to back title game trips, and beat a team (Kentucky) widely expected to go 40-0.

It wouldn't look good for Barry Alvarez or Bo or anyone involved with their program to acknowledge manipulation. In fact, if I were running the show I'd be looking to actively have a story as to how we came to this moment.

UW 65 NU 70 "Just like football!" Love it. Thank goodness the WIAA wasn't overseeing that game or Northwestern's student section would've been in trouble!
