The Troy Fabiano era in Panther Women's soccer has had a positive start. A 4-0 victory over Youngstown State today has the Panthers leading the league at 4-0, and raised their season record to 7-3-2. The Panthers were picked to finish eighth in the league in the preseason poll.
They are led in scoring by sophomore Anna Smalley and junior Callie O'Donnell, with six goals each. Smalley has been on a tear in league play, scoring three goals this week.
The Panthers have not yet played the top teams in the league (Cleveland State and Northern Kentucky are tied for second at 3-0) with the exception of Oakland (tied with Valparaiso at 2-1 for fourth place), so it's premature to conclude that the Panthers are back to dominating the Horizon League, but the early results are encouraging.
The Panthers will face the Vikings in Cleveland next Saturday, but will host Detroit, Valparaiso, and Northern Kentucky following the Cleveland State match, so the next two weeks will give fans a good read about this team.

The Panthers beat Cleveland State at Cleveland last Saturday, 1-0, to raise their record to 5-0-0 in league play.
Northern Kentucky has continued to win, and has pulled into a first place tie with Milwaukee. Oakland is in third, Cleveland State in fourth, Detroit and Valparaiso tied for fifth, followed by Wright State, UIC, Green Bay and Youngstown State.
The Panthers have the next three matches at home: hosting Detroit on Saturday night (Oct 17), and Valparaiso next Wednesday night (Oct 21), before Northern Kentucky comes to town on Saturday, October 24th. Northern Kentucky hosts Cleveland State on the 17th, and then visits Oakland on the 21st.
One statistic i found interesting: the Panthers are currently second in the league in goals (28), but only eighth in total shots. Northern Kentucky has one more goal than the Panthers, but has taken 51 more shots (204, to 153 for UWM).

The Panthers are all the way back.
The Panthers scored early and held Valparaiso scoreless to win 1-0. As Northern Kentucky lost earlier in the day (their second consecutive loss in league play), the Panthers clinched at least a share of the regular season championship, with two matches left to play.
The Panthers will face Northern Kentucky on Saturday in their last regular season match, and then will travel to UIC next Friday. One win in those two matches will clinch the championship outright.
Congrats to Milwaukee.

The Panthers clinched their 15th regular season championship in the last 16 years by holding third place Northern Kentucky to a scoreless draw through two overtimes. with one match remaining, the Panthers know they will host the semifinal matches and the final match in the Horizon League tournament.
The Panther defense allowed just two shots which required saves from goalkeeper Paige Lincicum in 110 minutes of play. The Panthers have not given up a goal in the month of October so far. The last regular season league match will be next Friday at UIC. By the end of next Friday night the bracket will be set, but the Panthers know they have a bye in the first round matches. They will play in a semifinal match on Thursday, November 5th at Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium.

The tournament field has been set.
The Panthers, who were not predicted to make the field in the pre-season poll (predicted to finish eighth), are the top seed. Defending champion Valparaiso, picked first in the pre-season poll, finished fifth in the standings, and will have to win a road match to get to the semifinals in Milwaukee. Only Oakland finished where they were predicted to finish, among the tournament field.
The quarterfinal matches, Valpo at Wright State and Cleveland State at Northern Kentucky, are tomorrow night. The semifinal matches, Oakland vs. the highest seed to win a quarterfinal match, and Milwaukee against the lowest-seeded quarterfinal winner, are on Thursday night. The tournament champion will be determined on Saturday.
Go Panthers.

Both semifinal matches had to be decided by penalty kicks. Oakland and Northern Kentucky were scoreless through the second overtime. Oakland scored on four kicks to one for Norhern Kentucky.
The Panthers scored in the first half, and the Raiders scored late in the second half to force overtime. The Raiders had more opportunities in the overtimes, but could not score, so the match had to be decided by penalty kicks. The teams traded goals on their first two attempts, then traded saves in round three. Wright State won in round five, scoring four penalty kicks the three for the Panthers, ending a tremendous season for Milwaukee.
