Shocking loss by Valpo at Ball St. Definitely one of those losses that will hurt at large chances down the line if it gets to that.

At-large chances?

FTA isn't just whistling Dixie. They were #1 in the RPI going into that Ball State loss. It will hurt, but W's over Iona, Rhode Island and Oregon State aren't nothing. OSU will get buoyed by the Pac 12 and the other two are legitimately good teams. Win out their non-con schedule and lose 2 HL games and the title game, that would put them at 30-5 on selection sunday with victories over Belmont (2), OSU, URI and Iona. URI at 107 is technically their worst win right now - even IPFW was 104 in the RPI on Saturday. URI will be buoyed by A10, OSU by Pac12, and Iona will be straight up good. A Belmont sweep and wins over Oakland (or perhaps us, Detroit or Wright State) could give them as much as 8 top 100 victories, but most definitely at least 3 and probably 4-5. Ball State is a bad loss, no doubt about it. They'll get a little benefit of the doubt since it was on the road, and one bad loss doesn't kill anyone's season. They just have to take care of business. As do we. Our at-large chances are certainly gone, but we can still win the Horizon League Tournament, so let's take care of business. It's all any of us can do. Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards

Here's the reality:
Valpo is going to lose at least a few more games, including likely more than one in league play.
Midway through the non-conference schedule, league members are an aggregate two games under .500. Take away the non-D1 games and they're 12 under .500. Only four teams -- Valpo, Milwaukee, Oakland and Green Bay -- have won as many as three games.
Compare this with the Summit, where every team but IUPUI has won at least three games and every team but IUPUI and South Dakota are above .500.
Long story short: every single time the Crusaders play a conference game, their RPI will slip. Sometimes by a little and sometimes by a lot.
So they could enter the league season with an RPI of 20 (they won't) and still have no shot at an at-large berth.

My only interest in Valpo getting an at-large berth is that Milwaukee is the team that beats them in the HLT champ game to force the NCAA's hand.

My only interest in Valpo getting an at-large berth is that Milwaukee is the team that beats them in the HLT champ game to force the NCAA's hand. Amen! That's all well and good, guys, but as long as we're a member of this conference - and university leadership's actions have convinced me that the plan long term is to mostly ignore the athletics program - I want the conference to do well. GoD, isn't it you who used to rattle off how many NCAA Tournament victories we had in comparison to other conferences? At-large bids compared to other mid-major leagues? These things matter for the profile of the Horizon League, of which we are still a member until further notice. I just want the conference to do well, because the rising tide raises all boats. I'd rather make sure that the harbor we're in thrives than to just hope we're the only team that does well. Benefits to Milwaukee are numerous, some obvious and some not so. An at-large Valparaiso doubles our chances this season of winning units. We all know that this department's budget is a couple years away from having to make up for losses of Butler's units from 2010 and 2011. This is the last season that we are going to collect on the five units from their 2010 tourney, and next year will be the last of the 2011 money. That's real cash, and I want us to have as many chances as possible to make that better - and a unit for the 2016 tournament will be worth significantly more than the 2010 or 2011 tournaments. If you're unfamiliar with how the money works, please read this. It was about $1 million back in 2010. This tournament, each unit will be worth about $1.67 million over the next six years. It helps us, albeit slightly, in scheduling. If teams know we're going to suffer from a smaller RPI hit when our conference is better, they're more likely to schedule us. It's only a chance thing and it may not actually change the schedule, but Illinois would look longer at us if we were in a better conference. A better conference puts in at-large teams. Don't forget the other obvious one, which is that attendance will be easier to come by because we would have more recognizable names on the schedule. So there's personal reasons why we'd want other conference teams to do well! Except Green Bay. I definitely enjoy their misery.

I don't necessarily disagree with your analysis Jimmy -- I'm just not a big fan of the Valpo program and I have this admittedly parochial view that the road to the HL title should always run through Milwaukee. The Valponians are pretty full of themselves right now. My heart won't bleed if we knock them out in the tourney and their record isn't enough to get them an at large. Just being honest about it.

Color guy Mark Adams is awesome. Constantly praising Valpo and mid major ball as VU is taking care of Florida State. This guy gets it.
His best rant was basically: This (FSU at VU) is what non conference basketball should look like. It's a shame Power 5 schools won't give mid majors a chance.
He made it perfectly clear hie he feels about Syracuse, Michigan, and Tulsa making the field.
Adams could be one of two guys I like on ESPN.

Valpo just played one of the best defensive halves I have ever seen. Fernandez literally blocked or altered every shot on every possession. Incredible.

Valpo played probably the best 2nd half they've played all year. Just incredible.

Just outrageous that Valpo was not in the NCAA field. Anybody want to guess why?
Here's a hint: Dakich mentioned that when FSU played at Valpo in the previous round of the NIT it was the first time a high major had played there since Purdue in 2010.
