While Begel may be a tool, I can't say I disagree with many of his points..... no more rob

"I placed a call to Braun to talk about this, but she didn't return the call. I talked to a couple of associate athletic directors but they said Braun would have to be the one to comment. By the time darkness hit Monday there was still no word from Braun. Then they tried to fake me out with a 7 p.m. email. I've been dodged by the best in the game and this one didn't even come close to fooling me.
"One quality of a big time program is when a writer for a site with the huge reach of OnMilwaukee.com calls abut something controversial, you call back. You don't run and hide."
Remember kids, there's no "I" in team, but media starts with "ME"
This dinosaur thinks he's still a relevant voice and must read. Kinda funny actually.

I like how he can't be bothered to do the slightest research (12,000 seats? Nanoseconds needed for me to come up with 10,783, 30 seconds to google search the arena and see basketball capacity for someone else), but he's playing up how he's such a great writer for such a great site like OnMilwaukee.com.
The only reason OnMilwaukee.com is relevant in the world of sports is because of Jim Owczarski. He is the most underrated person in sports media in Wisconsin. He's underrated because of where he works. Dave Begel hasn't been relevant since the Carter administration.
Beyond that, it's not that he's saying the wrong things. I believe the problems with Milwaukee Basketball run much deeper and are indicative of the need for a whole cultural change surrounding athletics.
My problem is that he's a curmudgeon who has no cached credibility with the Milwaukee Panthers fan base. It would be one thing if he's written good things AND bad things about the program for years, but all he does is pop his head up when it's time to kick at us. Even in March, when he had to eat crow, he threw in the caveat that he expected UWM to not come close to selling out its ticket allotment. Well, Begel, we not only bought out our whole allotment but some of St. Joe's as well.
You can't say that this wouldn't carry more weight if it were written by Owczarski, a guy who has covered this program through good and bad. There's a reason that when the Journal Sentinel went with their hatchets in that bullsh*t 2008 "Party's Over" article, they had it written by people who weren't already covering the program. And it carried less weight because of it.
When was the last time Dave Begel even WENT to a Panther game?

If Jimmy's right about Owczarski, this program's dead in the water anyway.
Asked on the Roundtable where he thought the new arena will be built, he stared into the camera and said, "Right where I have always believed it would be built. At The Arena site!"
Stomach punch.

Based on the way this season has unraveled, in my current state of mind regarding the team I can't disagree with Begel at this time.

Based on the way this season has unraveled, in my current state of mind regarding the team I can't disagree with Begel at this time. I agree. But, there's no way the university can afford over $1 million to make a change after this season. Jeter's buyout exceeds $900,000. A new head coach would cost at least $250,000. I don't like the reality of the situation, but simple economics tell me Jeter is the head coach next season. I've defended him in the past, but can't any more. He has brought this program back to the Ric Cobb level.

There are plenty of untapped, barely tapped and no-longer-offered funds available here to make this a reality.

Every time someone links to some new Dave Begel screed about UWM I have the same thought: Begel's still alive? Remember the last time someone came up to you at your office or school or wherever and said "Did you see what Begel wrote?" Me neither.
As for the caterwauling on the board I'll hold my tongue. The season's not over, our kids are playing hard and getting better and there's a lot of help on the way next year. And bluntly the coaching question is still about .005% as important as the Arena question. I have been getting some bad vibes in the last couple weeks. Reading between the lines I would say there is still at least a 50% chance that the Bucks will announce the Arena site and assume (probably correctly, I'm sorry to say) that inertia will brush aside any opposition. I desperately hope that doesn't happen. If it does, Joel Claasen wouldn't take this job and the JS will recover four column inches a week to report on the Packers' lunch menus and favorite video game characters.

I agree with your concerns regarding the Arena, Fran. The owners were pretty clear earlier that they "can't buy what isn't for sale," but now I'm hearing less and less that the preferred site (Panther Arena & JS building) is out of the equation. I truly hope my worst fears won't become a reality, but I'm bracing myself for the worst... as any Panther fan has learned to do over the years. I just hope that some magical solution will come out of it for the school that becomes a win/win for all. After all, there has to be some sort of emergency plan in place by school officials, right?
All I know is that this waiting game has been absolutely brutal. I'm looking forward to this month being over with so we can all finally know our fate. I just wish they'd hurry up and rip the bandaid off already.

After all, there has to some sort of emergency plan in place by school officials, right? Wrong. Actually, I'd say that there is a contingency plan. It's Division 3.

Not one of those guys are interested in spending that load of money to just get a new coach quicker. Sit tight. If things don't get better, your absolute worst case scenario is two more years.

Just because we're playing like a D3 team doesn't mean we'd take that much of jump backwards. The average enrollment of the 9 D3 schools in the state is about 7,400. We are over 25,000. In the words of our beloved quarterback, "R-E-L-A-X."

Maybe Green Bay, at 6,000, should consider it.
