I had the opportunity to watch the team for a while on Friday. Needless to say watching the first official practice gives an extremely narrow view of things -- but it's also better than nothing. So anyway, a couple guys who stood out to me:
First and foremost, Steve McWhorter looks like exactly what he is -- a fifth year senior point guard who led his team into the tournament. He's just a man out there.
Austin Arians looks primed to pick up where he left off in February and March. Big, athletic, great shooter. I'm not sure there's a more talented wing in the league.
Brett Prahl is going to be a very good player in the H League some day, and he will help us already this year.
Justin Jordan has nice size, a pretty good handle and plays passionately. He has a funky shooting motion but he strikes you a s a guy who couldn't care less as long as his team gets it done.
Cody looked healthy and his shot was smooth as ever. He ran the floor pretty well too.
Trinson White was having a hard time getting the ball through the net but he is really active going after the ball.
Of all the players I watched the guy who absolutely jumped out at me was JR Lyle. JR has obviously been working on his shot as he was really draining it in shooting drills. In live work he is hard to handle with his suddenness, both offensively and defensively. The kid looks like he is ready to take a big step for the team.
Those were the guys who stood out the most. Matt Tiby wasn't able to do live work but it was obviously nothing more than a minor early season tweak.
For a first official the guys were really working hard. There's a lot of pride in this bunch, a lot of size and a lot of talent. If the other teams in the league have forgotten about us that will be their mistake.
It was just great to hear the shoes squeaking and the ball bouncing again. There is no better sport than college basketball.
