www.uwmpanthers.com/sports/w-soccer/recaps/082214aaa.htmlUnacceptable. I don't think anything annoys me more than this quote: "The scoreline is disappointing, but I was encouraged by what we showed in the second half and I think we'll take a good step forward on Sunday." Playing for Milwaukee Soccer means something. I understand it's coach speak and I know he'll get on them, but I would show a little bit of anger. Who cares if you were encouraged by the second half? We lost 5-0. This isn't a program that loses by that much. Rarely - like when we play Notre Dame or North Carolina or Texas A&M, nationally elite programs.

After a 0-0 score at halftime, Oregon scores 2 goals in the 2nd half to beat Milwaukee 2-0.
The problem really is that the University seems to have no problem with struggling in non-conference season (for all sports basically) as long as the program continues it conference title streak. Why does this University tell students academically to think outside the box and keep pushing for excellence, but then doesn't want athletics to achieve more than just winning a Horizon League or McCafferty Trophy? There is nothing more to gain from staying in the Horizon League as a big fish in a small pond.

So would you encourage the soccer program to schedule nothing but easy opponents in non-league play?
There are eleven players on the squad who are playing their first soccer at UWM this fall, nine of whom are freshmen. That's a lot of new faces, a lot of young players who are learning to play D1 soccer the Milwaukee way.
I know the coach wasn't your first choice to take over when Coach Moynihan left, but it's hard to argue seriously with two consecutive NCAA tournament berths.
How do fans get to feel so entitled as to get upset by circumstances such as these?

How do fans get to feel so entitled as to get upset by circumstances such as these? Easy, it wasn't too long ago we were ranked in the top 25. It wasn't too long ago that we were the top dog in the state. A telling sign will be their performance against Marquette. They haven't looked good against them recently.

We haven't looked good against anyone recently ... outside of the Horizon League.

It wasn't too long ago that we had an all-world player on the squad....

And for a decade before Hagen, Moynihan and David Nikolic were still running roughshod over the conference. We're the best program in the conference and it's not even a discussion as to who is second. The program was built to be a national power and that empty shirt Costello had to go and ruin it for everyone.
This isn't volleyball, where the Horizon League is extremely low-major and the midwest has no talent in comparison to the west coast, so all the talent floods to high-majors here. In volleyball, Penn State and Wisconsin get the talent and everyone else falls by the wayside on talent. There's no chance for volleyball on a national level. Soccer is different. Moynihan and Nikolic owned both Wisconsin and Illinois on the recruiting trail, and they built a program that was winning, big, in regular season games against national names. We had become second-tier (after ND, UNC, TAMU, etc.), and the only reason we didn't advance in the NCAA Tournament most years was because we'd shoot ourselves in the foot or something like that. 2008's own-goal loss to Michigan State at Notre Dame was particularly awful, and would be the worst if we hadn't lost in 2005 with 20 seconds remaining against Marquette. If anything, the knock on Nikolic and Moynihan was they didn't win in the big dance. But they won frequently against high-majors in the regular season.
Yes, Hagen did very well. But she wouldn't have been the high scorer she was without Kate Megna et al setting her up. And like all of them, Hagen was recruited by Nikolic and Moynihan.
We can go round and round about how Henschel is only starting year 3 and we don't know what his recruiting is like, but Mike and David recruited players who got on the pitch and made an impact in year one, and a lot more than just Apple.
What are they doing at Northwestern? Well, the other day they knocked off Marquette at Marquette.
Let's not forget, Henschel is the coach who was booed big time at his introduction during a basketball game when one Whitewater parent came up to the front and let Henschel know how he feels about him one last time. It was super inappropriate, but I talked to the guy and he said he was doing it against the wishes of other parents who felt the same as he did but didn't want to put themselves out there like that.
I talk to former players when I can, usually when I run into them or we talk on Facebook. Almost exclusively they wish David Nikolic had been hired as head coach.
Costello made our bed, now we're sleeping in it. I'm not going to lower my expectations for the program because the coach isn't the one I wanted.
I want volleyball to strive for that Horizon League title every year, and hopefully knock someone off in the tournament. I expect both of our soccer programs to win the Horizon League every year and win multiple games in the tournament. That is what the history of Milwaukee Soccer demands.

Great win at Marquette. Talk about aging 20 years in 20 minutes! This team has played better in recent games, losing close ones to BC and Depaul. Had they tied Marquette after being up 4-0, would have been devastating. They kept their composure and finished off the game as they had started! Kudos to the team and coaching staff! Milwaukee hasn't beaten Marquette since 2008!

Win at Marquette? I didn't see anything in the local paper about this.

The "wrong" team won.
Seriously, this was the Panthers' first victory in the series since 2008. It was worth a mention, especially since it was such a hard-fought match. The last-minute goal to win it was just like the HL Tournament Championship last fall.
