UWM comes in 157th this year among the 230 listed schools with $13,278,301 in athletics revenue, and has the 155th-highest athletic expenses totaling $13,421,922. We very nearly broke even! Wisconsin somehow is second among all public Division 1 NCAA schools in athletics revenue and spending, and 5 of the 10 highest-spending universities are in the Big Ten (Iowa? What?) -- the SEC has 6 of the top 13. Texas, with its devoted television network, has both the greatest revenue and the greatest expenses, and manages to turn a $19 million profit while receiving no subsidies whatsoever. Incredible. UWGB for its part ranks 217th in revenue, and manages to turn a tidy $80,000 profit. Marquette is not listed, as it's a private school. www.usatoday.com/sports/college/schools/finances/

Yet it's still, arguably, a good investment when you consider the marketing impact your sports teams have for the university and its system.

No one would know these schools are without sports. What's the difference between Marquette and St. Mary's in Cleveland? Basketball.

Troubling that 81.5% of that is subsidized, nearly $3M more than UW-Madison. And we don't even know how student fees play into these numbers.
