If my goal is to work at say Johnson Controls, I can go to school for Engineering and then I can get a paid internship with them while I am still in college, even if I have an academic scholarship. If I am visiting a school and the dean of the Engineering school has me over for a BBQ, its fine. A wealthy Engineering alumni could go and buy me a car if he wanted to, again no problem. However if my goal is to play pro basketball I cannot even talk to an agent without compromising my amateur status. A coach can only have so many contacts with me without getting in trouble. He can't have me over and probably cant even give me a ride in his own car otehrwise it might be an improper benefit. I can't get paid for all of the hours I put in nor can I get an actual part time job because they fear I might get paid more just because I am an athlete. My coach can bail on the school and start work the next day but if I want to follow suit, I have to wait a year (2 if in conference).
I'll start caring about integrity and morality as soon as the NCAA does.

I will never understand people who revere morality in sports. They are only there to entertain you. So, for entertainment we are to compromise our character and integrity? Sports ARE entertainment and should not be taken so seriously, for sure, but to compromise morality? Sports are part of our lives, though entertainment, and the people associated with it should practice good moral character, honesty and integrity or else we can begin to refer to ALL sports like professional wrestling. Now THAT'S entertainment with no pretense about what place it occupies in our "entertainment" lives...... Delete the sports pages and place all news in the "Entertainment" section of the paper? Its proper place then??? Right? This is so hilarious coming from someone who cheered for Jimmy Collins. Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards

Am a UIC guy who checks all boards and has season tix several places. Never cheered Collins at all. Had his diffs with Pearl that predated UIC and Milwaukee. History follows, though. At least JC isn't in the market for another job he shouldn't have had in the first place and proved it the longer he stayed. Should have been asked to leave. Would have been glad to give you Schmidt, as well, when he applied.
Recruiting can be a dirty business and is made so by the players in it. Pearl and Collins represent that. No way would I want either of them at my place nor am I proud of either's accomplishments. Don't want to win that bad. Pearl had problems in both his professional AND personal life that smacked of integrity issues.
Blatantly broke the rules. Just because no one was killed or any money was stolen are not reasons to look the other way. What ever happened to "what do you do when no one's watching??" Pearl's answered that .......after being caught.......
I don't want a banner bad enough to allow a Pearl or Collins type in the program. How about a Calipari?? Banners down after he's left and wins vacated.... But somebody wants wins more than integrity or maybe their integrity is at the same low level?? So he gets rehired ASAP. Pearl too??
Actually overboard fans and boosters cause the real problem themselves by accepting behaviors unacceptable at work or at home?
Why? For sports?? Hello wrestling............
WE are the NCAA and get what we accept. It's an excuse to say that's the way it is. It's that way because we allow it..... Maybe the moral character in US needs to change before it changes anywhere else. Lead by example???
You guys are all over Jeter because he's not Pearl but maybe he's the RIGHT guy for the job.... right guy for you. Same with Moore for us. If it's Moore or Collins I'll take Moore in a heartbeat. Not happy with his record but not looking for Pearl to replace him either........
