Marquette has been playing good ball the past several years while the Panthers have struggled.
This looks like part of the strategy to challenge the players with a difficult non-league schedule so as to toughen them up in hopes of better performances when the league season rolls around. The Panther women have more success against MU than the Panther men have: the women's team have actually beaten Marquette (but not in several games).
I'm not sure the overall strategy works all that well, but I believe Panthers generally played tough non-league schedules during the good years under Sandy Botham, when they routinely finished high in the league, and won two regular season and tournament titles. They haven't fared as well in recent years, but perhaps Coach Rechliz and her staff can turn that around.
