Why do they play this tourney a whole before next Sunday? It can't be because of TV, like in basketball.

I'd guess Loyola's exit from the league messed up everybody's schedule.
The Panthers are off to Madison on Friday to face the Badgers (12th overall seed in the tournament). The Panthers did take one set from the Badgers earlier this season, and had a number of young players develop over the course of the season, but it will take the Panther squad's best outing of the season to have any chance at an upset.
The Panthers will be facing a taller and more athletic Badger squad on their home court and in front of a large crowd of Badger fans. I don't have much expectation that the Panthers will pull off the upset, but it would really put the Panther program in a brighter spotlight.
No matter what happens this weekend, I am happy for the Panthers. They returned to the top of the league in 2013 after finishing out of the running in 2012, and they are returning nearly all their talent next year.

Milwaukee is one of just seven D-I universities to have both soccer programs + women's volleyball make the NCAA Tournament!

The Panthers needed to play their best match of the year to have a chance against the Badgers, and they didn't get even close to doing that. They were swept, 25-11, 21-14 and 25-15. And those scores don't tell the whole story of how the Badgers dominated the match.
The Badgers hit .461 for the match, and the Panthers struggled to get to .100 and finally got there in the third set, finishing the match at .137. The Panthers never managed to score more than two points in a row, while the Badgers had several multiple-point runs. The Badgers had eight service aces, and the Panthers had one. The Panthers' block did not score a point until the third set.
The Panthers finish at 18-11 for the year. The Badgers are now 24-9 and advance to the second round of the tournament.
Rachel Neuberger finished her career with 7 kills and hit .500 for the match.
The cupboard should not be bare for the 2014 Panther squad; Neuberger is the only graduating senior.
Next year's squad should have five seniors, led by Julie Kolinske, who has lead the team in kills this season and last. Taylor Golabowski will anchor the back row as a senior. Hannah Blanchard also has experience.
There will be six juniors on the squad, led by setter Kayla Price, by Nicole Latzig and Maggie Dunbar in the front row and Maisey Mulvey in the back row. Sammi Herron has played some this year and last.
There will be three sophomores, all of whom saw significant time of the court as freshmen this year: All-freshman team member Myanna Ruiz, defensive specialist Maggie Schmitz and middle blocker Kaisa Mattson.
Two freshman will join the team next fall. One is a scholarship front row player, Jessica Kalous, who has been all-conference the last three years and her high school team's MVP for the last two years. The other new player is a walk-on, Mikelyn Olson, part of an undefeated state champion squad at East Troy, a three-time all-state volleyball team honoree, and all-conference all four years in high school, during which time East Troy won its conference all four years. She is a threat from the serving line, having averaged 64.5 services aces per year in high school.

The Badgers have made it to the Eiite Eight in the NCAA tournament. so they have clearly continued to play at the high level they showed against the Panthers.
In fact, the Panthers played at least five teams that made the 2013 NCAA tournament, and four of those teams made it to the second round. The Badgers alone advanced past the round of 32 and the Sweet Sixteen.
The Panthers RPI for 2013, as of December 2nd, was 77th in the country.

The Badgers continue their tourney run to the title match. They beat the defending champs, Texas, 3-1 in their semifinal match.
Edit: the clock struck midnight on Cinderella. Penn State beat the Badgers in the final to win a sixth national title. No shame for the Panthers to lose to the national runner-up.
