Schedule is out. grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/wiml/sports/w-soccer/auto_pdf/2012-13/misc_non_event/2013-wsoc-schedule.pdfEight teams from the Big Ten, Big East, SEC and ACC, as well as two additional league champions form the non-league portion of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer 2013 schedule, which head coach Greg Henschel released today. Also included in the slate are seven games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament teams a year ago. Marquette and Michigan each made the Sweet 16, while Miami (Ohio) and new Horizon League member Oakland each advanced to the second round. "Our strong 2013 non-conference schedule will provide us great preparation for our Horizon League schedule," Henschel said. "The league continues to raise its level each year and with the addition of Oakland that will once again be the case in 2013. We are looking forward to the season with great anticipation."

I'm happy to say that I was too hasty to be wary of coach Henschel. Way to go on a great schedule!

Women's soccer is currently 1 - 6 - 1.
How the mighty have fallen...
Thanks Costello.

They also had the 24th toughest schedule in the nation going into the season. They lost a heartbreaker at home to a tough Miami (FL) game earlier this month. Played Indiana fairly tough. Maybe the non-conference schedule is too tough but they will be fine once Horizon League play begins.

This seems to be a common strategy among Panther programs...they want to challenge themselves in non-league play with the intent of toughening themselves for league play. Overall, i'd say it's been a fairly successful strategy.

I'd say the experiment is a huge failure. Time to ask Nikolic back....What a disaster.

Rick Costello Strikes Again!
A. We should have paid Moynihan whatever he wanted. B. If you couldn't afford him we should have hired David Nikolic on the spot.
This was a program that if someone graduated, the next in line took over. I know we had something very special in Apple, but we were still kicking ass before she got here. We just did it more so with her.
Mistakes of the past will haunt us.

I'm not worried about the program and other people shouldn't be either. Here are a few reasons why:
A. This probably was the toughest non-conference schedule in program history. Last year's was pretty tough as well. Henschel is not shying away from challenging his team, which is why this team played the 24th toughest schedule in the country. Now some could argue that it hurts a team more than it helps but it still led to a NCAA Tournament appearance last year.
B. They have 3 seniors on this year's squad and last year's roster had 4. Sarah's senior year had 5 seniors - all starters. Obviously, when you graduate a player like Sarah Hagen, there is going to be a adjustment period but when you also graduate players like Kenzie Gillaspie, Laurel Regalie, Mary Wandolowski, and Keara Thompson who were very pivotal players as well to the Panthers success between 2008 and 2011, it makes the "rebuilding" process seem even larger.
C. With what should 8 senior returning letterwinners next year, they are setup for another run. Maybe they won't be ranked 9th in the country like they were in 2011, but they will have faced plenty of challenge over the previous few seasons to be a good team.
D. They started slow like this last year, and still turned it on to win the Horizon League Regular Season Title and the Tournament Title. So until the Panthers fail to win either, the bottom still has to fall out.
Conference play begins Saturday night at home vs. Valpo. The record says 2-7-1 but I've seen a lot of their play to say that record indicates more how difficult the non-conference schedule they played was more than a lack of talent.

Something needs to change here.
Two years ago, this was a nationally prominent program.
And that held true even before Sarah Hagen's arrival.

I guess it comes down to expectations.
The momentum that this program created under Moynihan was such that this program was expected to win a game(s) in the NCAA tournament. NCAA tournament teams do not start 2-7-1 regardless of their schedule.
Now it looks as if some of us would be happy to be competitive in the Horizon League. Ouch.
I will say this. I spoke to one of our higher ups in the AD this weekend who was not concerned with the state of women's soccer. This person also couldn't stop raving about the men's team and how good they are/will be.
Milwaukee should have top 20 soccer teams!

This program has not hit rock bottom yet, but it is very close. They were outplayed by Valpo, yet managed to pull out a W. Unfortunately, winning the HL, does not translate well when it comes to recruiting. Letting this program fail would be a sad commentary on the commitment to winning from the AD.
