8:16am-The meeting had a lot of procedural stuff that I'd assume most of us don't care much about so I'll omit that portion. I moved the 2 most important and discussable portions to the bottom.
-One of the more important discussions of the meeting was that the Intramural Sports Program was moved from the Department of Athletics to the Klotsche Center Department. The program will initially be funded through money left over from Klotsche's construction. (The emergency money that was set aside was not used up) After this is used, the Klotsche Center's operation funding should cover this. Many felt that this was a good idea as the Athletic Dept's focus is and has been NCAA athletics with Intramurals being pushed to the side. This move allows for Intramural growth and focus. Steven J. Mohar wrote a letter saying how he would love the opportunity to grow our current program. Bud also made note that in the future, Club sports could be moved to this dept. as well. (Football?) The reason for that move would be to sustain these sports' development and membership as many club sports peter out when people graduate. Ultimately any action would need to be made by the Chancellor. The Board ruled to support this move with only one abstention.
-April 8th marks UWM's doubleheader at Miller Park. UWM will take the field at approximately 5pm following the brewers vs. D-backs. Butler will be the opponent for the Panthers.
-May 7th at the downtown Hilton is when and where the Student Athletes Award Ceremony is.
-Women's Tennis won their first match in a couple years
-Due to the Klotsche center being available, good summer camps are expected (Yes they assured us that the Cheerleaders will be there)
-Chuck Lang brought forth a new policy that changes/clarifies the way UWM pays out bonuses. Following the new wording, awards/bonuses aren't given out unless those receiving them are employed by UWM when the school votes on it. Thus anyone who leaves during the fiscal year will not be eligible. The Vice Chancellor has to approve to be eligible. This was in response to the confusion and gray area that occurred when award winning coaches Pearl and Bennett left in the past 2 yrs. The board once again passed the change with 0 nays and one abstention.
-The way things currently stand UWM will hold both Men's and Women's BBall tourney's here. Tickets should be available by the end of this week, with them being available to the public next week. Women's and Men's single game ticket prices will remain the same. Men's All-Session Passes will be increased $5.
-Athletics is currently in the process of redoing the Men's and Women's soccer apparel deal. Women had been Adora licensed and Men-Puma. The new deal should put them both with one company and it will last 4yrs. This will put it in line to expire with the other sports' deal with Adidas in 2010. At this time Athletics believes they may pursue an all-sport licensing.
-The former chair of the Board felt it was necessary to bring up the fact that the JS assigns no beat reporter to the women's team. The JS told Bud that UWM was getting the best Women's Bball coverage in the league. Bud also commented that it is not UWM's fault as UWM provides the JS with the info. Chuck noted that it starts with interest in the seats. More people come=more coverage. Oh and Bobbi did cover last night's game.
9:17am-I left at this point as I had class and no more business was on the docket. I did miss a tour of Klotsche which I regret but oh well.
MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS
1.-This was our year to host the Horizon League baseball championships. The Brewers, Mallards and other fields/teams were pursued but no venue was found. Wright State will host this year's competition. This is especially noteworthy as we lose our spot in the order and won't be able to host for 8 years! There was extreme displeasure expressed with the Brewers organization as many things were promised in the construction of Miller Park and the Brewers have not come through. Scheduling was not the problem as the Brewers have an extended roadtrip during the requested period. One of the main gripes was that the groundskeeper didn't want that many games on the turf. Athletics tried to come up with a plan to get the initial couple rounds played somewhere else with the final couple games played at Miller but when the Brewers came back with their costs, Athletics felt it didn't think it would be fiscally responsible to go through with it. they didn't feel that even with an enormous amount of advertising, not enough people would come to justify the expense. Bud's thoughts: "They keep raising those costs. Thats what we're not happy with."
2.-During the meeting I asked Chuck about moving our bench to the other side and having the opposing team face our student section in the second half. I inquired about the reason behind this as well as if we could change this. Chuck responded that when we played there in '03 it had to be a neutral court so we had to set it up like that. We ended up winning that game, so we haven't changed it. (My jaw dropped at this point) Chuck also pointed out an advantage of this setup-easier to manage with student section and opposing bench on opposite sides of the court. The size of our student section provides for problems that other teams in our league don't incur. I quickly went through the advantages and asked him if it could be changed in the future. Chuck responded that it won't be changed for the tournament nor next year. (I would assume that Bud could be convinced much easier than Chuck on this point.)
fan's thoughts: 8 YEARS!!!!! I don't care if we can't get new jerseys for our bball team for the next 6 years. Spend the freakin money. And the Brewers just dropped a notch in my book with this move.
How superstitious and dumb can our Athletics be to turn down an easy home court advantage? I for one am tired of free seats for students. Its time to pay. With conditions that we get dibs on the side court like the Crazies and the Zoo.
